Animate Object Eternal Legality

New 09 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 16 Comments

Why can’t animate object be eternal legal while worded the way it currently is?

It’s not the official templates we use. Acorn/silver-border cards often use more vernacular language which don’t parse correctly for the rules.

Animate Object Eternal Legality Issue

New 08 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 21 Comments

What about animate object makes it not eternal legal? You can represent tokens with non card objects in black border.

The template to make it eternal legal was clunky and confusing, so we went with the more elegant version.

Identifying Drinks with Shroud

How do I know if a drink has shroud?

The only way I can think of would be Animate Object plus some effect that grants shroud.

Animate Object Rules

If I have a drink animated with animate object and my opponent uses ashnods coupon on it, They then gain controll of it, yeah? Thats at least how I interpret it.

They get to drink it, but they don’t gain control of it. :

Hexproof Drink Fetching

New 14 Jan 2024 Asked by aalgot 35 Comments

If Chandra and Nissa are playing one game and jace and Karn are playing another and. If Jace plays animate object on a glass of wine and then places a hexproof sticker on it, can Nissa have Chandra fetch it with ashnods coupon (ye I know this isn’t a situation that would happen in the lore it’s just an example.)

As Ashnod’s Coupon fetches target drink, no. : )

Token Definition

New 11 Jun 2023 Asked by dolbuzalo 32 Comments

Un-question: How does Claire D'Loon interact with a token that doesn't say it's a token (such as the item created by Animate Object, the new Tolkien Creature, or a piece of paper on which I wrote "this is not a token")?

A token is still a token even if the word “token” isn’t written on it.

Animate Object Design

New 30 May 2023 Asked by hyrosen-blog 39 Comments

Animate Object as an eternal card should just create a 0/0 creature token to which you apply the stickers. Simple enough.

If we didn’t concern ourselves with it being a non-Magic card object, yes, it would have been easy to write. But as that was the whole point of the design…

Animate Object Complexity

New 29 May 2023 Asked by minoke5618 31 Comments

You said the 'eternal' Animate Object text would be long and boring - could you post it so we can gawk at its awkwardness and be glad it has an acorn stamp? :)

We didn’t end up templating it because we chose to make it eternal.

Animate Object Acorn Status

New 28 May 2023 Asked by tmdoublezero 45 Comments

Why is Animate Object an acorn card, does it not work in normal magic? I was so excited to have another card for my artifact-less azorius burn deck thanks to the various burn stickers, but now I have to ask to use acorn cards or run a bunch of cards that make 1-2 tickets while all burn andlife loss effects are at the 4-5 ticket range. :(

The rules text to write the eternal version sucked all the fun out of the card, and was over twice as many words.

Feedback on Unfinity Launch

New 10 Oct 2022 Asked by thatguyovertherewiththething 75 Comments

I judged my Unfinity launch this weekend. Wanted to send some feedback here:- Players seemed really frustrated that stickers were pretty one use. Stickers never went back properly on the sheet after use. - General Positive reaction to Attractions. Players did seem frustrated with the dexterity ones, mainly due to difficulty. Lots of talk about using them in Commander.- Humor of the set landed okay but when it landed, it landed very well. Lots of love from the enfranchised players on the in-jokes and references.- "What constitutes a hat?" Is now a philosophical question. Highly recommend some reminder text when "hats matters" returns as a theme.- Some complicated black border rules questions actually came up more often than normal. One that stuck out was the interaction between Monitor Monitor, Drop Tower, and how the rules see dice results.- Embiggen, Animate Object, and A Real Handful were definite bombs that took over games. Six-Sided Die as well but I think that breaks even due to the variance. All in all, everyone left happy over 3 events in 2 days (minus one vocal player who was upset with stickers.) I personally loved the set and plan on building around some cards in commander. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the feedback.

Animate Object Clarification

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by dizzlr-blog 25 Comments

Dear Mark, I am writing because I disagree with one of your unrulings in regards to Unfinity. The card in question is Animate Object; while I kind if understand the need to add that it's a token, I'd believe the card works better and is more fun if it does see a magic cards text if the object is a magic card, as the game shouldn't really be able to distinguish that. I believe this rule is a core change to its printed version. I know it's a uncard... but I really hate errata.

It’s a token in the rules regardless. We just added it in because it makes it clearer.

Populating Animate Object

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by themartiangeek 20 Comments

Since Animate Object considers the object a token, what happens if you populate it?

You sadly don’t get the stickers which means it has no toughness and will immediately be removed by state based effects. You can copy the stickers with Mobile Clone though.

Animate Object Art Rule

New 25 Sep 2022 Asked by j-waffles 18 Comments

Acorn rules question: If I animate a hat using animate object, does it have a hat in it’s art? What if the brand logo on the hat has a hat in it’s art?

No. Inanimate objects for Animate Object don’t have “art” other than the art sticker.

Animating Sticker Sheet Limits

New 17 Aug 2022 Asked by culation 33 Comments

You've answered the questions about Animate Object on a Magic card, but what about animating a sticker sheet? The object's characteristics are defined by the stickers on it, and the sticker sheet just happens to have some already on it, in a way completely permitted by the rules...

Any object you animate is just an object and has no qualities that carry into the game.

Animate Object Clarification

New 14 Aug 2022 Asked by ramisirote 37 Comments

I have an unfinity rules question. Can you animate a magic card with Animate Object? I think a card counts as inanimate. If so, and the card is a creature card, will the resulting creature have the abilities printed on that card?

You can animate a Magic card with Animate Object, but it’s treated like any other object and doesn’t count it’s Magic properties. It’s just a square piece of cardboard.

Stickers Excitement

Happy to hear it.

Grimlock Gameplay

New 04 Aug 2022 Asked by carthain 52 Comments

If I control Grimlock, Dinobot Leader, and then use Animate Object to animate a Transformers toy, does the toy get the +2/+0 bonus from Grimlock? (or, does the "other Transformers(r)" refer to a creature type?)

Absolutely. : )

Animate Object Rules

New 28 Jul 2022 Asked by dangohsu 116 Comments

So an "object" must be "not alive" to be able to be an option for Animate Object. What if I found a body of a rat, chose it as the object I animate, and then somehow reanimated it for real, would my creature still be on the battlefield? If not, do I get my P/T sticker back?

This is a first for this blog, but I have to officially advise against reanimating dead things (outside the game, within the game, have at it).

Cross-TCG Cards Mechanics

New 28 Jul 2022 Asked by syn222 26 Comments

Am I able to bring in cards from other TCGs using Animate Object? And because those cards on not tokens, if they are returned to my hand, and have effects from the hand on the actual cards, could I activate them (for example Exodia and Ash-Blossom from ygo)? Similarly, if I Animate Object a Magic the Gathering card, does it retain the abilities printed on the actual card?

Animate Object treats all objects the same. None have any status that transcends being an outside object. So, using Magic cards or cards from another game has no in-game functionality.

Animate Object on Roomba

New 27 Jul 2022 Asked by mangledremains 40 Comments

Un-Rules Question: If I cast Animate Object on a Roomba that's been turned off, then turn it on, what happens as it's no longer an inanimate object?

Here’s the defintion of inanimate we’re using: “not alive, especially not in the manner of animals and humans”. The Roomba is still inanimate when turned on. That does mean you can’t use your dog for inanimate object. Hmm, maybe one day we’ll do animate pet. : )
