The General

Possibility of 'Partner With' Mechanic

New 31 Jan 2022 Asked by masterneo 43 Comments

Do you think Partner With could be in standard sets? While I personally tend to have issues with cards that directly reference commander for some reason Partner With has enough noncommander overlap to keep my interest. Norika Yamazaki, the Poet partnering with Heiko Yamazaki, the General seems to obviously be a perfect fit. I don't know if the rules for partner with are considered too complex for general play but used in moderation could be a great opportunity.

We tend not to push tutoring mechanics in premier sets.

Surgeon Commander's Role

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by johnjanuarius 43 Comments

High fives all around for Un-Sanctioned, and in particular for Surgeon General Commander. I've been trying to build a Dr. Julius Jumblemorph commander deck for a while, and swapping him in fixes just about all the deckbuilding problems I was having.

That was the card’s purpose. Note that the name is just Surgeon Commander. The General has been crossed off.

Throne of Eldraine Reception

What's the general reception to Throne of Eldraine so far?

It’s been very good.

Magic Player Handedness

Do you know if Magic players are more likely to be left-handed than the general population?

I do not. Quick poll?

Modern Horizons Reception

New 26 Sep 2019 Asked by blaze-1013 195 Comments

How has Modern Horizons adding cards directly into Modern been received? From what I can tell it has some loud naysayers, but I'm curious what the general response has been.

Here’s a fine place to ask. What do you all think?

Instant Discard Rules

New 25 Jul 2019 Asked by chetskolos 30 Comments

In the general case 'Instant Discard' is not a thing, but what about the more specific case of "Recoil" and "Compelling Deterrence"? Is bounce+discard still an allowable thing with instant timing?

We do do instant discard just very infrequently.

Flicker Card Design

New 04 Jul 2019 Asked by petruscaex 36 Comments

Mark, you were talking about mechanics that ask for specific types of cards. I think that the card Flicker asked for being an Instant but it was printed as a Sorcery. Was there a reason for that? Nowadays the effect could be printed as a White instant, right?

I originally made Flicker as a vertical cycle in white in Urza’s Destiny. Flicker, the card, was originally an instant at common. All the cycle went away except Flicker got changed to sorcery and moved to rare. No one at the time but me saw the general utility of it. Luckily, I’m persistent and kept putting it in sets.

Protections Return

New 29 Jun 2019 Asked by theycallmejokke 17 Comments

Hi Mark, could you talk a bit about protections (and to a less extent colour hate cards) return in M20, either here or on the mothership? As it's return really puzzle me. I thought the general consensus of protection was that it was rules finicky, and over all just leading to bad/unfun gameplay, by either doing nothing, or being close to non interactive, what have changed?

I talked about it in my second Core 2020 preview column.

Psychographics Exploration

New 15 May 2019 Asked by nayon7 35 Comments

Re: prison players. You said "You’re misunderstanding the point of the psychographics. It’s not about what they play, but why. Do they enjoy the rush of doing this, does it allow them to express something about themselves or is it a means to demonstrate what they are capable of?" the why is that it prevents the other players from doing their thing. So T@mmy I guess? But the general image of that archetype is "likes to play big flashy things" and prison usually plays more passive cards

Read this, my follow-up article on the player psychographics that goes into more depth:

Nicol Bolas Arc Origins

New 04 May 2019 Asked by roastedgravy 38 Comments

Today’s my birthday! Could I get some trivia about the Nicol Bolas story arc?

The earliest forming of the Bolas arc started back in Magic Origins. Not all if it was figured out, but the creative team knew the general direction the story was going to take. In the beginning, Kaladesh and Amonkhet were swapped in their position. Happy Birthday!

R&D Onboarding

New 29 Mar 2019 Asked by lgosvse 48 Comments

If I were to be hired into Wizards R&D right now, how long would it take for me to be caught up to speed on all the future stuff that R&D knows about that the general public does not?

It takes a few days to see it all and usually a month or more to wrap your brain around it.

Dimir Civic Role

New 23 Mar 2019 Asked by ultwarrior 56 Comments

You've mentioned that the general public on Ravnica know the Dimir exist but think they're weak, not influential and past their heyday. But what is it that they think the Dimir still do? Apart from all the combat stuff we see from a Magic perspective, Golgari are farmers, Izzet are engineers, etc, but what civic function is (in public) assigned to the Dimir?

I think they do menial tasks. They are not considered as productive as the other guilds. Apparently, they run the newspaper.

Planeswalker Quantity Concerns

New 09 Mar 2019 Asked by dude1818 70 Comments

I think you misunderstood the question about "too many PWs." It wasn't that WAR has too many, but *every* set has too many. Other question asker points out that there are 25+ every year normally, which I agree is too many

That is not the general consensus of the playbase. In fact, the original plans for planeswalker cards was to do them more infrequently, but we upped the number because of audience input.

Equipment Commander Concept

New 23 Feb 2019 Asked by slynnwen 46 Comments

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of commanders! However, I think the general idea behind a piece of equipment as a commander, where whoever wields it becomes the commander, with the equipment itself being the symbol of office, could work.

My point wasn’t that it was impossible to make a single card flavorfully work, but rather legendary artifacts/enchantments that could be your Commander was more exciting for novelty sake that it was for hitting the essence of why Commander is built around having a character as the center of the deck.

Commander 2019 Excitement

New 22 Feb 2019 Asked by ascan7 56 Comments

Sorry to say that but i'm terribly unexcited by the commander 2019 announcement. No teaser art, not even single sentence about its themes. The general lack of informations about the next products is making me bored and uncertain, i don't know if you should keep my money for this summer's magic products or buy something else.

I think the announcements were more to positionally put them on the year’s calendar than tease them. We have a lot of products and if we tease too many at once, it splinters the conversation too much. We will tease the Commander decks closer to their release. We just had the slide show for them, and I’m pretty confident the Commander fans are going to be happy.

Arcane vs. Tribal Support

New 27 Oct 2018 Asked by djscrub 25 Comments

Is Arcane specifically a 9? Or is the general idea of "tribal support" for an instant/sorcery subtype a 9?

Arcane specifically. And I’m probably being a bit harsh. I could see us finding a different use for an instant/sorcery subtype.

Unstable Deck Reception

New 16 Sep 2018 Asked by zanmor 48 Comments

How was the second deck from Unstable recieved? Like just the general idea, not necessarily contraptions specifically? If you can separate that reception.

Contraptions were well met, but the extra deck is a huge leap for black border. While we may get there, we’re not currently close to it.

It is beloved by a minority of players.

Kamigawa Reception

New 29 Jul 2018 Asked by wassail 59 Comments

I played Mirrodin block when it was originally released and loved the world building & flavor. I'm curious, what did the general public not like about those aspects of Kamigawa?

From the best we could interpret, it felt odd and unconnected to what they expected from the world.

Witch vs. Wizard

New 22 Apr 2018 Asked by clone-wars-fan 66 Comments

I don't agree with making Witch a type because there is no fundamental difference between it and Wizard. Dinosaurs and Lizards are different enough that Dinosaur should have been a distinct type, but Witches are just female Wizards. There is no since splitting a tribe in two for a small reward.

If you went out to the general public and asked about Witches and Wizards, you would see people tend to think of them very differently (okay, unless they’re a Harry Potter fan).
