Slaying Mantis

Impressions of Slaying Mantis

New 29 Jun 2022 Asked by dusqofrakdos 38 Comments

While on the subject of un-cards: The card Slaying Mantis brought me more joy than I had any right to feel. The name, and the art and going with the action you perform to make it fight combined in such a perfect way to me and no matter how badly I throw it I'm always excited to try.

It’s a fun card. : )

Historic Horizons and Paper Game Connection

New 27 Jul 2021 Asked by bassimelwakil 51 Comments

I really like Historic Horizons embracing the fact mtg is digital and I see it as yet another opportunity for silver border to shine, because silver border is really the only place mtg has embraced that it’s a physical paper game. Dexterity cards (not just Slaying Mantis or Boomstaker type things, but also Hot Fix and Cramped Bunker) , sub games, and caring about people outside the game, and even speaking (Gotcha wasn’t great, but there’s other ways to play with that). Here’s hoping I’ve given you another talking point in your quest to green light another un-set! :)

You’re preaching to the choir, but I appreciate the enthusiasm for Un-sets. Feel free to communicate with others Wizards folk that you’d like to see more Un-sets.

Using Prosthetic Hand in Gameplay

New 03 Jul 2021 Asked by tchukkelz 84 Comments

If the Homunculus token from Handy Dandy Clone machine enters as a copy of Slaying Mantis and you have a prosthetic hand, would you be allowed to throw your hand onto the battlefield for its etb ability?

I have ruled yes, but only if you use a prosthetic hand. You can’t just bring one to a game.

Unruling Slaying Mantis Query

New 01 Jun 2021 Asked by definitely-not-a-squirrel-blog 39 Comments

Unruling question- if my opponent double majors a slaying mantis, are they allowed to pick what they throw at the table for the token, or does it have to be a magic card (or magic card sized object)?

It has to be a Magic card (although Magic-card sized tokens from boosters are fine).

Slaying Mantis and Prosthetics

Re: Handy Dandy Slaying Mantis. What if I have a prosthetic hand?

I stand corrected. If you are able to throw your hand three feet, you may do so. Note you can only throw a prosthetic hand if it’s your prosthetic hand.

Handy Dandy Clone Machine Clarification

New 06 Jan 2021 Asked by ask-azula-voiree 53 Comments

Un rules question: If the 2/2 homunculus token from handy dandy clone machine somehow becomes a copy of slaying mantis as it enters, how do I throw my hand from three feet away? Can I punch a creature to fight it?

There’s no way to throw your hand three feet, so it can’t do the enter the battlefield effect.

Chaos Orb in Unset

Is there any possibility of Chaos Orb being printed in an Unset?

The exact card is on the Reserved List, but we’ve made physical dexterity cards like Slaying Mantis in Un-sets.

Recalling an Exceptional Game

New 02 May 2020 Asked by ricketyeng 129 Comments

FYI the world's BEST game of Magic has been played by my wife and I and no other can hope to top it: An Enter the Dungeon subgame under the table. Old Fogey played. Frankie Peanuts used his question and Sword of d&d to make a dragon. BINGO was achieved. A 10/10 BINGO was successfully blocked to survive with 1 life. Slaying Mantis was thrown. Frankie Peanuts - "will you give me sweet sweet kisses until end of turn?" meant the final turn included much kissing. And this was all under the table.

I congratulate you on playing the best ever game of Magic. Thanks for sharing.

Yet Another Aether Vortex Scenario

New 08 Mar 2020 Asked by xfrostbyt3 30 Comments

Hi Mark, I signed up for Tumblr just to ask you this. If Yet Another Aether Vortex is on the field and someone flips Slaying Mantis, where does Slaying Mantis end up if he actually even gets thrown?

Slaying Mantis gets revealed on top of your library. Its “enter the battlefield” effect gets triggered. You throw it like normal, but it is still considered on top of your library during its effect. Assuming it survives its ETB effect, return it to the top of your library.

Physical Dexterity in Play

Where is physical dexterity on the Gotcha! scale? Such as Charm School and Slaying Mantis.

Physical dexterity is a 2. We do limited amounts, but we always do a little.

Defining a Hat

New 30 Jan 2020 Asked by cursedereaper 61 Comments

Hat related questions: Does a wig count as a hat (Alexander Clamiton)? Do helms count as hats (Syr Cadian/Old Guard)? Is a gold plating on the head a hat (Frankie Peanuts)? Is a halo some kind of hat (Richard Garfields mana symbol halo)? Is a glass container worn arround the brain/head a hat (inhumaniac/SkullSaucer)? Does a wrestling mask coutns as hat Slaying Mantis? Is Timmy Power Gamer wearing a hat in his new artwork? Is the Goblin Token wearing a hat?

From the FAQ for Goblin Haberdasher: What counts as a hat?A hat is a garment worn on the head that’s not part of another garment. Hoodies, for example, are not hats. Items that only cover the face and not the top of the head, such as a face mask, are also not hats.

Handling Slaying Mantis Tokens

Un-question, how do you handle Slaying Mantis token copies? In particular if you represent them with a dice? Do you just throw the original?

I use the original card for the tossing.

Yes.

Player as Creature

New 02 Apr 2018 Asked by burgerhunt 44 Comments

Hey Mark, is there any way a player can enter the battlefield in place of a creature? I'd like one of my friends to be able to body slam the table in the stead of my Slaying Mantis doing so.

I’ll see what I can do with the floor rules.

Un-card Game Constraints

New 24 Dec 2017 Asked by itsbisky 24 Comments

does slaying mantis affect creatures outside your game? i.e. if you're playing at a draft with other games going on around you, can those players still touch cards?

Unless an Un-card specifies it affects other games, it, by default, can only affect your game.

Un-sets Play Spirit

New 15 Dec 2017 Asked by prosenrood 205 Comments

Is there a good reference for a "because you're dumb" rule for people who do stuff like try to put quarters in a sleeve with slaying mantis before tossing it?

Sure show them this: Hello, It’s been brought to my attention that you’re trying to do something out of spirit of Un-sets. “It doesn’t say I can’t” is not a defense for acting like a jerk. Play nice. That’s officially the guiding principle of Un-play. Have fun with your opponents not at their expense. That said, return to your game. Sincerely, Mark Rosewater (Un-Rules Manager)

Cloning Machine Mechanics

The full hand.
