Appreciating the Otters in Magic

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by magicalotterlady 11 Comments

Please pass my thanks to whomever decided otters should be a thing in Magic.I've carried an otter plushie around with me to events through my entire Magic playing career, so almost 15 years. Ive had an otter along for the ride from pretty much every FNM to PTQs to traveling everywhere I could drive within 8 hours to play Legacy for several years or even trips to the other side of the US for large events a couple of times.I was screeching and immediately tried building an otter deck when Lutri and Theving Otter came out with Ikoria. I was literally babbling with joy at the otters in Wilds of Eldraine for MONTHS. To say I'm beside myself with excitement for Bloomburrow would almost be an understatement. My favorite thing to build or play in Magic are tribal-based decks. I built an angel one as my second ever deck (Shards of Alara/Zendikar standard) so I could teach my mom to play before she passed. I was known for a knight/Sword of _____ and _____ deck for years. I've even played Merfolk and Tribal Lightning Bolt (burn) decks a time or two. But I can now have my beloved otters as a theme for my deck.Literally the only way that it could be more perfect for me would have been if there was an Otter Knight named Rora for my little tournament companion. So thank you for making my love for Magic even stronger by adding otters.

I like making otter people happy. : )

Jund Trivia

New 14 May 2023 Asked by grantwarmstrong 29 Comments

Hey Maro, it's my birthday today. Could I please get some trivia about Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, or if not then Jund sac in general?

In Shards of Alara, Jund’s named mechanic was going to be something that triggered whenever a creature died. We end up making a three-card cycle out of it and replaced it with devour. Happy Birthday!

Future of Battles

New 06 May 2023 Asked by tiwaztyrsfist 37 Comments

Hello Mark,
The time span between the First Planeswalkers being released (in Lorwyn) and the Second set (in Shards of Alara) was almost a full year (by scryfall, 9 days short of a full year).
Do you think it will be as long before we see more Battles, or do you expect them to show up in sets again sooner than that?
Thanks!

We’re being extra cautious with battles.

Exalted Mechanic Trivia

New 17 Feb 2023 Asked by epson777341 54 Comments

Wondering if I could get some birthday trivia on my favorite mechanic, exalted. It's the first mechanic I built a deck around and I recently tore it up to make 2 commander decks.

I had a bad first reaction to exalted when Brian Tinsman first pitched it in our Bant mini-team for Shards of Alara. I thought it was too narrow of a hoop. But after the first playtest, I apologized to Brian. I said, “I was wrong. This mechanic is great.”The important lesson. Always playtest your ideas. Theorycrafting (what we call trying to think through an idea by just talking about it) only gets you so far.Happy Birthday!

Phyrexian Arc Pace

New 17 Jan 2023 Asked by petruscaex 45 Comments

Mark, if I may: I understand that this Phyrexian Arc actually started back in Scars of Mirrodin, just as the Bolas' Arc kinda started back in Shards of Alara, but the "ignition point" of the Bolas' Arc felt for me something around Magic Origins, which give us like 4 years of stories, while the ignition point of this Phyrexian contlict feels like Kaldheim but it had a pause until Kamigawa came out, which gives us like 1,5 years worth of stories. Maybe if we had like 2 years of development of this part of the arc things wouldn't feel that rushed.

The Phyrexian storyline has been subtly building for many years. Maybe it was a little too subtle.

Tezzeret as Artifact Creature

If Tezzeret got a creature card would he be an artifact creature?

Shards of Alara block says yes.

Comparison of Set Designs

New 13 Apr 2022 Asked by randomette2 32 Comments

Compared to the Shards of Alara or Khans of Tarkir sets, it seems to me that New Capenna has way more dual colored cards. Is this a new way to design shards and wedge sets?

I don’t think the numbers are too far from Khans of Tarkir.

Improvement of Creative Team

New 07 Mar 2022 Asked by obazervazi 89 Comments

I'm already liking New Capenna more than Alara. The individual shards felt really shallow and one-note compared to worlds Lorwyn and Zenikar that got five times the attention from the creative team. Not only is New Capenna a single cohesive world, but the individual crime families have more depth, with both a front and a true purpose. The creative team has really grown in the past 13 years.

Ironically, you explained what was happening in your last sentence. The creative team that built Shards of Alara was like five people. The current creative team is many times larger. The Alara team did amazing work with the resources they had.

Return to Alara Concerns

New 06 Mar 2022 Asked by shakeszx 46 Comments

I would just like to say I am both saddened and excited by the early reveals about New Capenna. On the one hand, I truly started my MtG journey with Shards of Alara, so seeing a full return to the shard combinations is exciting. Even if it’s not the actual Shards, it still feels like a return to my beginnings in the game. On the other hand, after seeing so many returns to Ravnica (which I love) and reading a lot about R&D’s design principles (and some previous questions to you), I can’t help but feel disheartened that if New Capenna is successful as a product and a setting, I will never get to see another Standard release set in Alara. Neon Dynasty and The Brothers’ War have shown that, at least for narrative sake, Magic can now go either into the past or future, partially eliminating the need to follow where previous sets left off. All this is to say that, while i understand design constraints and the need for freshness, I am sad that we will never see a true return to Alara…

A return to Alara is not off the table.

Shard Theme's Hiatus

New 05 Mar 2022 Asked by drewblive380 53 Comments

So 2008 Shards of Alara, 2022 Streets of New Capenna, that's a fourteen year hiatus for a shard theme in premiere sets, unless you count the incidental Ixalan shard tribes.Meanwhile, wedges have had two premiere sets and slightly heavier support, like one off legendaries, and two five deck Commander sets.So I wonder, is it distinctly harder to design shards, or was Alara block just a sour taste in spite of fan vocalization that prevented approval until now?

Wedges have gotten a little more love only because it hadn’t gotten a lot less love in the first twenty years of Magic.

Terminology: Arcs vs Wedges

New 11 Jan 2022 Asked by braveswordwielder 25 Comments

Before Shards of Alara came out, the color combination of a color and its two allies were commonly referred to as "arcs," after the shape you get if you draw a line between the three colors on the card back. "Wedges" got their name for a similar reason. I assume the reason wedges hung around as a slang term was because there was such a long time of them having no name that the functional term stuck.

Some people still call the allied combinations arcs.

Shards vs Wedges Naming Convention

New 10 Jan 2022 Asked by captainjackharness 38 Comments

Why do you think the term "Shards" caught on after Shards of Alara, but "Wedges" stuck after Khans of Tarkir instead of calling them "Khans" or "Clans" or something similar?

Because shards is more generic.

Geyadrone Dihada and Grixis Trivia

New 16 Aug 2021 Asked by pseudopotence 39 Comments

Salutations Mark! It's my birthday and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on Geyadrone Dihada or the Grixis color combination in general?

The original Grixis mechanic in Shards of Alara was a mechanic that triggered whenever a creature died. That mechanic got de-keyworded and moved to Jund. It appeared on a handful of cards. It was replaced by Unearth, a mechanic I called Flashdance of the Dead when I created it.Happy Birthday!

Four-Color Faction Set Difficulties

New 06 Jun 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 56 Comments

I was listening to your podcast on why it's unlikely we'll see a four color faction set and it ultimately comes down to "it would be really hard to do because of limited" which begs the question why you don't make more non-reprint sets and products that aren't based around limited (especially when most players play some form of constructed any way)? It also feels disappointing to realize an all multicolored card set (like Shards of Alara) isn't something we'll see again because of limited.

It’s not just because of limited. It’s hard to do regardless of limited. On top of that, limited plays an important role, and something causing problems with limited is a big issue.

Trivia Request - Alara Reborn

New 15 Feb 2021 Asked by kriosuranous 47 Comments

May I redeem my birthday trivia for a fact about Alara reborn?

Shards of Alara design started with the question, “How could we make an all-gold set?” The whole block structure was created to allow us to get to Alara Reborn.Happy Birthday!

Watermarks in Different Card Sets

New 26 Oct 2020 Asked by ghostlygideon 43 Comments

Why watermark the wedge cards in Tarkir, but not the shard cards in Alara?

We were just less willing to use watermarks back when we made Shards of Alara. I did try.

Designing the Shards of Alara

New 01 Sep 2020 Asked by veni-vidi-itwasok 45 Comments

Going for 3 years in a row. I got the Counsil of Marks working on Esper and you also being on Bant and Naya design teams but still designing Unearth for Grixis Is there anymore trivia on Alara, its Shards or is cards for my birthday so that I may know everything there is to know about it?

Shards of Alara had more designers in its design team than any other set. This is because Bill liked to rotate through team members to get lots of fresh blood and the set have a mini-team for each shard.Happy Birthday!

Exalted Mechanic History

New 22 Feb 2020 Asked by ticked-off-squirrel 41 Comments

Hey Mark! My birthday trivia probably got buried, but I was hoping for some trivia on my favorite mechanic, Exalted? Thanks!

When Brian Tinsman first created Exalted in the Bant mini team for Shards of Alara, I was skeptical as I thought it was too narrow a hoop to jump through, but it only took one playtest to make me realize I was wrong.Happy Belated Birthday!

Fan Art Submission Issues

since the symbols for the shards of alara came up I thought I'd email you the little design I came up with, but I tried the link on your articles and it didn't work, is there some other way I can get fan art to you?

Try a different article. The link should be working. I’m getting email.
