Color Mechanics Flavor

New 07 Sep 2023 Asked by workfromsaklas 30 Comments

Does design feel a certain obligation to put all of the mechanics that don't break or bend roles for certain colors within that color, or is there also a "rule flavor" factor taken into account? Like, take Treasure - it's not a bend or a break in Green from the rules end, but Green is traditionally not so keen on artifacts and now we have cards that make the color generate chests of gold and jewels. As a temporary ramp or color fixing mechanic in other colors that serves an important supplementary role, but it's already a core competency of Green (in other words, the color has about a billion other ways to accomplish the goals of the mechanic) and the rule flavor feels "off," does that come into play into deciding whether the specific mechanic goes in or not at the design level?Another example might be directly killing flyers and only flyers. Traditionally (and repeatedly, to the point that I think some heads would explode if there wasn't one of these in a set), that's something Green does, but it's not a bend or a break for Black, which directly kills stuff all the time. Would design then include a card with a Plummet effect (dropping any Enchantment or Artifact effects - something like Terror for flyers at Common), even though it feels like Black hedging in on something traditionally Green in nature, or would that just not enter the discussion?

It boils down to does that color need that resource in how the set is structured? If green needs mechanical access to treasure, then it’s allowed because it’s in its color pie. Note that treasure can have many different flavors and doesn’t have to be a chest full of gold. There are many natural treasures that are valuable that green would be happy to have. Also, while green hates artifacts representing artificial things, there are plenty of natural artifacts it actively uses. It’s why there are green artifacts.Black could have a spell that just kills a flyer if it was necessary, but just giving black it’s normal kill spell usually will solve the issue of black dealing with flyers without having to call it out.

Split Card Restrictions

New 25 Nov 2019 Asked by siamkor 24 Comments

"UG split card give a creature flying on one part and destroy a creature with flying" Wouldn't this be OK as long as it didn't have Fuse? You'd need two of these in hand to kill a creature, and at that point it'd be no different than having Leap and Plummet.

Having two different cards is fine. Having both abilities on the same card is not.

Creature Destruction Clarification

New 24 Nov 2019 Asked by ironchefravnica 35 Comments

"green/blue doesn’t get pinpoint creature destruction" - That's not what Plummet does?

Sorry general creature destruction. Green can have pinpoint creature destruction for fliers and/or artifact creatures.

Green's Flying Provision

New 23 Nov 2019 Asked by belwin-athena 30 Comments

Can green give opponent's creature's flying? Or would that make plummet effects to close to a kill spell?

Granting flying isn’t a green thing to do. It can grant reach.

Dominaria Card Choice

New 27 Apr 2018 Asked by djunknown0 40 Comments

I have a pretty narrow question about Dominaria. Why “Pierce the Sky” over “Plummet”? Pierce does 7 to flyers, so without buffs, the cards are nearly identical, and there are no flyers with more than 7 base toughness in the set.

I assume the creative team had a preference.

Green vs Fliers Logic

New 06 Sep 2017 Asked by theuninvitedghost 38 Comments

"green is allowed to destroy fliers." But fliers are a weakness of green. Why can green destroy fliers, but red not destroy enchantments?

Green can’t have good fliers. That’s not the same as Flying on opponent’s creatures being a weakness for green. Green is primary in reach and Plummet effects. Green is number one in Flying hate.

Green's Anti-Flying

New 05 Jun 2017 Asked by ellerain-blog 32 Comments

Green is a #1 in anti-flying but Plummet is a bad maindeck. Should bimodal plummet (like Stinging Shot) be a staple in every set to correctly represent Green's strength?

Being #1 is about more than just power level. Simplicity of message is also important, and not every card is made for tournament level constructed.

Green's Flight Strategy

New 27 May 2017 Asked by ghallberg 37 Comments

At some point I'd like a more through analysis on Greens relation to fliers. It obviously shouldn't have fliers on it's own side. But what about it's relation to other players' fliers, is it supposed to be weak against those? Always, or only when in large numbers? What about Plummet and Stinging Shot like effects?

Green is number five at flying and number one at anti-flying.

Green's Creature Handling

New 05 Mar 2017 Asked by superbooster88 38 Comments

If green cant deal with creatures without creatures, why are cards like Plummet ok?

There are two exceptions built into the color. Green is anti-flying and anti-artifact so it is allowed to have spells that destroy those two subsets of creatures without requiring a creature.

Green and Flying

New 12 Feb 2017 Asked by lsfnewyork-blog 33 Comments

Why is it that green cannot have flying but it can have both reach and the spire tracer ability?

Green has Reach and spells like Plummet because Green is allowed to have answers to Flying. I don’t believe Green is supposed to have what I call pseudo-Flying.

Colour Pie Bends

Which bends the colour pie more: Plummet or Clear a Path?

Both are technically in color.

Green's Anti-Flyer Mechanic

New 01 May 2015 Asked by anaivecynic 26 Comments

"Not a fan. It feels cheaty because it is cheaty." That's actually my biggest problem with Plummet. It feels like a cheaty way to give green an answer to flying that doesn't add anything to a set, but rather takes things away from a set so it can exist.

But Green is allowed to kill fliers. That’s completely in Green’s color pie. And how is Plummet any different than Murder in Black as far as “giving to the set”?

Green vs. Red Mechanics

New 27 Oct 2014 Asked by kpestana 19 Comments

If Green gets Reach, Plummet, and cheap artifacts that grant flying at common to answer enemy flyers, then why can't Red get the same things for enchantments? I would really like to understand what's the difference?

Because creatures are a much bigger and more prevalent problem that needs to be dealt with especially in limited.

Making Plummet Relevant

It’s been sideboarded in high level tournament play. Done!

Plummet vs. Fight

New 23 Aug 2013 Asked by kyrilschulz 12 Comments

Why hasn't plummet yet been reworked to use the fight mechanic? It doesn't seem like that much of a stretch given that most green monsters already dwarf fliers, and destroy does seem a little out of the color pie.

While green does not normally do creature destruction, there have always been two exceptions since the early days of Magic. Green can destroy fliers and artifact creatures.

Card Design Purpose

New 23 Aug 2013 Asked by anaivecynic 14 Comments

Now that we have fight, why do you insist on, how should I put it delicately, BLIGHTING my sealed pool with cards like Plummet? What is the mechanical purpose of this card? It strikes me as the definition of bad design, per your own design articles.

It’s meant to allow green to destroy flying creatures (because green is the primary anti-flying color).

Green's Flyer Hate

New 06 Feb 2013 Asked by theworlddoesnotspeak 5 Comments

Dear MaRo, Since Giant Spider in Alpha, green has been the color of flyer hate. Green has cards like Plummet designed to knock flyers out of the sky. My question is how this fits into green's color philosophy; Cards like Birds of Paradise and Hornet Queen don't seem to contradict green's love of nature. Aside from mechanical balance, is there a reason green disdains flying creatures so? Could things like other birds or drakes could be interpreted as within flavor for green?

The flying hate comes more from a mechanically need than a flavor one.

Questions on Chaos Warp

New 28 Jul 2012 Asked by rookie3k-blog 1 Comments

Are you sick of people asking questions about Chaos Warp and Plummet? You seem to be getting a ton of questions relating to those cards.

Players really want the color they love to do the things that it doesn’t now and so they latch onto cards that start dipping their toe in new color pie area.

Green's Removal Strategy

New 27 Jul 2012 Asked by threelawssafe 1 Comments

What are your thoughts concerning Plummet? Is it okay because it only destroys creatures with flying, or does it not quite fit into Green's slice of the color pie because it isn't a creature-based answer to an opponent's creature?

Green is allowed to kill two subsets of creatures and has been since the game’s early days: flying creatures and artifact creatures.
