Modern Masters

Costs with New Symbols

New 20 May 2024 Asked by hyrosen-blog 15 Comments

It's my birthday today. What are the chances of seeing {C/P} or {S/P} as part of a cost?

Both require two qualities to exist in the set (outside of something like a Modern Masters), so the barrier to clear is high.

Inorganic Content Impact

New 02 Jan 2023 Asked by ak-47osu 38 Comments

"inorganic content" is the feeling that a format has been warped because of R and D decisions to inject change directly into the format. E.g. powerful cards in Modern Masters, Commander sets, Alchemy, etc. It can feel forced. Its a finicky concept because ultimately all changes come from R and D. But people sometimes like the vibe better when these changes emerge from standard-focused sets

It is exceedingly difficult to make cards relevant in competitive larger formats at the power level of a Standard card.

New Premier Set Without New Keywords

New 08 Jul 2022 Asked by honor-basquiat 30 Comments

Modern Horizons and Modern Horizons 2 introduced 100s of new Magic cards. They were very successful and well received sets even though they didn't introduce any new mechanical keywords or abilities. If or when, a new premier Magic set that doesn't introduce new mechanical keywords or abilities?

Those sets chose to access all of the existing mechanics rather than create new mechanics. Premier sets don’t have that choice, so we tend to include something new in each one. Premier sets still have access to plenty of repeated mechanics. Also, premiere sets have world building to do, that sets like Modern Horizons and Modern Masters don’t have to worry about, that makes having access to new mechanics that we can custom to the world important to have.

Mixing -1/-1 Counters in Sets

New 05 Jul 2022 Asked by ebonstone 53 Comments

"R&D is pretty down on -1/-1 counters, so we haven't been using them as a base for new sets. Perhaps one day that will change."Do they really need to be a base? We know they cancel out with +1/+1. Can you just use them occasionally?

We don’t like to mix them in premiere sets as it makes it hard to read the board in limited formats. We do mix them in things like Modern Masters.

Eco-friendly Packaging Options

New 20 Jun 2022 Asked by mrmoustachemm 56 Comments

In recent bundles, land packs have come in paper packs instead of the usual plastic packs, and I'm all for having less plastic waste. Modern Masters 2015 tried paper box-packs, which had issues, but it seems like these new paper packs would work well as a replacement for the traditional plastic/metal hybrid packs the average booster comes in. Can we expect to see a set soon that tries using these paper packs for boosters?

We are working towards being more ecology-minded in our packaging.

Possibility of Future Sight 2

New 23 Feb 2022 Asked by mtgplayer 36 Comments

What are the odds of a Future Sight 2? By the way, thanks for Kamigawa Neon Dinasty. Everything about it is a masterpiece!

It’s something I keep trying to make happen. Once it resulted in Modern Masters.

Consideration of Reprinting Sets

New 21 Feb 2022 Asked by seabutcher 31 Comments

Have you ever thought about just straight up reprinting older sets? I still feel like most supplemental sets going back to abs including the original Modern Masters could do with having a couple more print runs in circulation. Both for limited and eternal formats.

The issue is we’ve made promises about printings. Part of being a collectible is having definitional time frames for when a particular product is going to be made. Now, that doesn’t mean we can’t remaster things or revisit worlds, but straight up reprinting old sets is off the table.

Modern Masters Theme Intentions

New 17 Oct 2021 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 36 Comments

Dear Mark, When we see themes in Modern Masters like mill or enchantments, does that mean that R&D knows there are potential constructed-viable decks and they're trying to push those strategies?

It means we’re giving new resources to decks to see what players can do with them. Note that many players will have fun with themes even if they don’t end up as top-tier constricted decks.

Concerns over Modern Power Creep

New 23 Sep 2021 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 38 Comments

How much does R&D worry about power creep in Modern, where the stronger the format gets the harder it will be for new Standard cards to impact it?

It’s one of the big reasons for Modern Masters.

Modern Horizons vs Future Sight

New 21 Jun 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 29 Comments

Can you help me understand why Modern Horizons makes Future Sight 2 less likely? I love MH1/MH2 but it's very different from Future Sight. Modern Horizons pays homage to a bunch of past sets and mechanics, similar to Time Spiral. Future Sight 2 would explore more new design space and new mechanics in any set since original Future Sight and would hint at what could be planned in the future. Both are experimental but very different.

All I said was I believe a Future Sight 2 would be done as a Modern Masters set.

Opinion on Returning Mechanics

New 26 Apr 2021 Asked by followingthemagic 33 Comments

As to multiple sets having the same theme; it was a nice test and I enjoyed it, but I’d appreciate a year or at least a few sets with returning mechanics only. Every set having a new unique twist gets tiring after a while, and we’ve had it going for a while. Idk if others agree, but when I hear a mechanic has “a lot of untapped potential” I get excited.

Modern Masters sets are the sets with only returning mechanics. Premier sets can have a bunch of returns mechanics, but we like to always have something new.

Modern Masters Set Request

New 04 Mar 2021 Asked by cairnwanderer 26 Comments

Can I request a Modern Masters set for "Tribes that haven't made it in Modern yet"?

More of a sub-theme than a theme.

Design Time Duration

New 04 Mar 2020 Asked by admiralmemo 30 Comments

I'm curious about design times. What are the longest and shortest amounts of time WotC has worked on a set, from initial brainstorming meetings until final locked-in cards to be sent to the printer? I assume this could vary some, especially with different types of products ranging from Standard-legal to Modern Masters to Commander precons, etc.

Modern Horixons was about the fastest we can go with a randomized booster product at about an 18 month window. The longest was Unstable that took seven years from start to print.

Pioneer Themed Set

Are special sets like Modern Masters but with Pioneer planned any time soon?

If Pioneer proves to be popular over time, I could imagine us making such a product.

We’ve already made a modern masters 2. It came out a few years back.

Fixed. Thanks.

Annual Innovation Sets

New 02 Mar 2019 Asked by themartiangeek 40 Comments

What was the innovation set for each year? I'm guessing 2019 - Modern Horizons, 2018 - Battlebond, 2017 - Explorers of Ixalan or Archenemy 2, 2016 - Conspiracy 2, 2015 - ???, 2014 - Conspiracy, 2013 - Modern Masters, 2012 - Planechase 2, 2011 - Commander, 2010 - Archenemy, 2009 - Planechase, 2008 - From the Vault, 2007 - Duel Decks, 2006 and earlier - none?

2017 was Unstable. 2015 was Modern a Masters 2015. Some innovation products become product lines so it can be confusing.

Color Identity Balance

New 20 Dec 2018 Asked by noblecuriosity 37 Comments

Blue excelling at many low as-fan things vs. other colors excelling at a few high as-fan things means blue's splashy (set-selling) MEMORABLE cards get to be more varied and unique. Ex. All Modern Masters mythics: U: Keiga, Snapcaster Mage, Temporal Manipulation, Tezzeret the Seeker, Vendilion Clique. 5 radically different effects, 2 blue-exclusive. Vs. R: Bonfire of the Damned, Comet storm, Kiki-Jiki, Past in Flames, Ryusei; 3/5 are damage boardwipes, the other 2 could be bends in U. See issue?

I’ve talked plenty about how Snapcaster is pushing more towards red and Vendilion Click is a black card masquerading as a blue card (aka a heavy bend). Things are more balanced than they seem.

Narcomoeba's Paradox

New 03 Sep 2018 Asked by carmillatype 130 Comments

Narcomoeba has actually appeared in two sets before Guilds of Ravnica: Future Sight and Modern Masters. Future Sight of course has it as a card from the future, so there's no questions there that it got the card from its "original" printing in the future. But Modern Masters is a set of only reprints, with no new cards, so it has to have cards from the past. Which begs the question: where did Modern Masters get Narcomoeba from?

It’s a paradox. Confusing time travel.
