Modal Dual Faced Cards

Batching Cards Potential?

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 1 Comments

Hi Mark, could the rules batch cards that have two different spells on them? Can they mechanically group together split cards, certain MDFCs, cards with adventures?

We for sure can list it out. I don’t know if the rules can handle the description.

Hybrid Mechanic in MH3

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by mistershinyobject 3 Comments

Why were the two-color MDFC lands in MH3 hybrid? The point of hybrid is "or" not "and," but the backside gives you that other mana anyway. What's the point of a card that says "you don't have to play mana sources of this other color" while also giving you a mana source of that color?

The point is you can play it in a deck of either color without having to support the second color in the deck.

Including Non Siege Battles

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 8 Comments

In ONE you should realy have included at least one non siege battle to make the fact that only sieges are defended by opponents and have two sides clear, several people including the YouTuber nikachu (who you shouldn’t check out because he does custom card reviews but is a good example of this) just don’t get it (as proven in any custom card reviews stream where he reviews any of the several non siege battles of different types made by the community)

Normally, we we introduce a new thing we limit how it gets used. For instance, we thought up MDFCs when we first put made TDFCs, but took our time putting it into a product. I believe including both in the same product would have been a mistake.

Compliments for Modern Horizons 3

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 29 Comments

I would like some compliments/high fives sent to everyone who worked on the mdfc lands in Modern Horizons 3. I love the flavor text showing little bits of lore across the planes. ALSO THEY LOOK SO PRETTY.Two of my favorites are the izzet and simic taplands. The cards look so good!

High fives shall be applied.

Evoke and Channel Mechanics Difference

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by gevth 19 Comments

Evoke, channel, sorceries and instants with kicker that make tokens and some MDFC are all mechanics that allow you to play a “sorcery” with a chance of making a creature if you have the mana. What are the factors between choosing one over the others?I’m specially intrigued on the reason for creating evoke when channel already existed.

Channel was probably a mistake in that it’s listing something we do all the time, something that doesn’t want an ability word. The only reason we brought it back in Neon Dynasty is we wanted returning mechanics and our choices were slim.We like having different tools available, which allows us to customize use to match the needs of the set.

MH3 DFC and MDFC Variety

New 28 May 2024 Asked by rowanalpha 61 Comments

When you first previewed MH3 you made a big deal about the inclusion of DFCs. I was hoping that meant we’d get a big variety of MDFCs and TDFCs and - especially as a pauper player - some MDFCs at common. Having just the 5 flipwalkers and 20 mdfc lands is a lot less both in quantity and variety than I thought we might see.

25 is a decent amount, comparative to other DFC sets. I agree the variety is on the low side, but it did do the two most popular executions, the DFC planeswalkers and MDFC lands.

MDFC Design Logic

New 24 May 2024 Asked by aalgot 8 Comments

Why is one side is a MDFC arbitrarily considered the “Front”? unlike with transform cards that doesn’t seem necessary. But I may just be missing something.

The rules have to have a designated front and back. It has to specifically be something in each zone. For example, if it’s in your library, and it’s a creature on front and a land on back, you can’t tutor for the land, but you can tutor for the creature.

DFCs already are.

MDFCs vs Duel Masters

New 23 May 2024 Asked by theverdantchef 6 Comments

Regarding all the new MDFCs with lands on the back in MH3: is this an attempt to slowly turn Magic into Duel Masters / Kaijudo?

The MDFCs are very different than Duel Masters’ mana system. There all cards have the equal ability to provide mana (aka any card can be “turned” into a land).

MDFC Lands Archetype Focus

New 23 May 2024 Asked by thornthallid 2 Comments

I really like the cycle of 2 colour MDFC lands. It was a bit disappointing that the UR and UW ones only get maximally used in energy decks. Do you know why 2/10 of a cycle of generically useful type (dual colour land) were focused in on one very specific archetype?

I believe all the lands leaned towards their draft archetype.

Feedback on MDFC Lands

Extremely extremely happy about new MDFC lands! Thanks to the teams that made this happen!

Glad you’re happy.

Signpost Uncommons Praise

Apply hi-fives to whomever decided that a cycle of signpost uncommons should also be manafixing for limited (as MDFC lands).

Will do.

MDFC's Modal Status

New 12 May 2024 Asked by thepiebandit 28 Comments

Can you explain/ask why MDFCs don't count as modal spells for Riku?

Because the rules define “modal” and MDFCs don’t fit that definition. The simplest way to identify modal cards is the use of the bulletpoint - •.

Plot on MDFC Cards

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by raytyger 28 Comments

Could an MDFC or Split-card have plot?

The rules could support it, but it would cause some confusion and be tricky to design.

Plot Mechanic Flexibility

New 10 Apr 2024 Asked by tevans-living-life 34 Comments

What happens if I cast one half of a split card, and instead of going to the graveyard, it becomes plotted? Can I only cast the half that I originally played?

If you plot a card, you are allowed to cast any spell on that card. This also applies to MDFCs.

Valki and Tibalt Mechanics

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by armchairjj 35 Comments

hey Mark, if I plot Valki am I able to cast Tibalt on a later turn?

This is an educated guess, but I believe no. The spell you plotted is what you have to cast.EDIT: Okay, I talked to Jess, the Rules Manager. I’m wrong. If you plot an MDFC, you can cast it as either side.

Modal Spells Definition

New 27 Mar 2024 Asked by vedney 21 Comments

Are MDFC modal spells?

Not unless it has you choose from a bulleted list of options.“Modal spells” are not any card where you make a choice, but a particular template.

MDFC Cards Reception

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by thewongside-blog 25 Comments

How were the MDFC cards with tapped lands on the backside received? Are they a tool that design expects to use again?

Well. I do believe we’ll do them again.

Hardy of Myra's Rules

New 07 Jan 2024 Asked by jimmycomments 17 Comments

Hi Mark, I have a couple of rules questions about Hardy of Myra's Marvels if I may:

How does he work with adventures? Does he only trigger when you cast the creature part if that's the part with flavour text?

How does he work with DFCs? Does he only count the front side (or the side you're playing if it's an MDFC)?

Thank you!

Hardy counts the part of the spell you are casting, so yes, you only count the flavor text if you cast the creature portion with flavor text. With a DFC, you only count the side you are casting.

MDFCs and TDFCs Together

New 09 Nov 2023 Asked by rowanalpha 35 Comments

Would you put both MDFCs and TDFCs in a set together? My not a premier set but a higher complexity set like a Horizons set?

Maybe in a Modern Horizons, if it had DFCs.
