Hornet Sting's Conditions

Would Hornet Sting still be a break if it said: "Target creature you control deals 1 damage to any target."

Yes. It would need to hit just creatures.

Just FYI, In your A to Z article for Hornet Sting you refer to Magic 2021 meaning Magic 2011.

Thanks. It’s been fixed.

Rejected Hate for Certain Cards

Really? Your most hated card is Maze of Ith? I would have thought you'd say either Leeches or Hornet Sting.

Leeches and Hornet Sting? What cards are those?

Parameters of Green Damage

New 17 May 2020 Asked by parc2 40 Comments

"Hornet Sting is a famous break in green.", ah. how about the cards the deal a set amount of direct damage to flyers/players? are they bends or breaks?

Green can damage fliers. It is not allowed to directly damage players.

Counteracting Green Breaks

Would hornet sting not be a break if it required you to control an Insect?

“Target Insect you control deals its damage to target creature” can be done in green.

Hornet Sting in Green Exception

"It needs to be tied to a creature. Green doesn’t get straight up direct damage." where does hornet sting fall into that? ({g} instant - 1 damage to any target)

Hornet Sting is a famous break in green.

Eldrazi over Hornet Sting

New 07 Mar 2020 Asked by manchester-uni-student 36 Comments

This talk about hornet sting me thinking. Would you be more happy if it was lets say "eldrazi sting" instead of hornet sting when it costs 1 generic to deal 1 dmg to any target?

I’d prefer for it to be colorless and costed correctly for a colorless ability.

Color Pie Break Differences

New 06 Mar 2020 Asked by tqmurdock 24 Comments

Is hornet sting a bigger colour pie break than gut shot even though the latter can be played in mono green as well (and also mono blue)?

Being a color pie break requires you being in the color, not whether or not a deck can play the card. Cards playable in any deck have restrictions to not upset the color pie, but are a separate issue. Just because artifacts, for example, can deal damage to creatures without restriction doesn’t mean green gets to.

Hornet Sting Tournament Impact

Was Hornet Sting especially impactful in tournament play?

It got sideboarded as it allowed green to deal with something that was supposed to be a problem for green.

Personal Dislike of Hornet Sting

New 06 Mar 2020 Asked by morjoko-blog 43 Comments

What is the story behind you disliking Hornet Sting? Is it just because its a color pie break? Were you attacked by Hornets and it brings up unwanted trauma?

I tried really hard to stop the original printing and failed. And then it saw tournament play.

Hornet Sting Reprint Implications

I'm excited to see Hornet Sting getting reprinted in Mystery Booster! Does this mean it's no longer considered a color pie break?

It’s just R&D messing with me. It’s still a color pie break.

Green's Abilities

New 01 Mar 2019 Asked by dornith2 39 Comments

In lew of white not drawing cards and red not dealing with enchantments, I would like to discuss why green can't have non-creature based removal/card draw. We've already got Harmonize + Hornet Sting so we know both of those are in color pie.

So much abuse. : )

Color Pie Considerations

New 23 Dec 2017 Asked by stitchedlife-deactivated2018020 31 Comments

Can development decide to intentionally break the color pie if they feel it will ensure game balance (Hornet Sting and Beast Within got printed after all) or is that some else's call?

No one is supposed to break the color pie. Things slipped by in the past as I wasn’t able to monitor everything. We created the Council of Colors to help ensure it doesn’t happen.

Combat Colors Discussed

New 01 Oct 2017 Asked by thesilvernoble 30 Comments

Hey Mark! You said Red and White are the two colours most associated with combat, did you mean specifically as a tandem paired together? Because I'd imagine green would be at least one of the top two colors of combat. It's really hard to build an all-green burn deck, for instance, no matter what the hornet sting contingent will have you believe!

Green is the most creature-centric color, but other than Giant Growth it doesn’t tend to have a lot of “cast during combat” spells.

Green's Combat Methods

RE: "Red can get it [enough damage to kill basically anything] if it pays for it." So Green can get Hornet Sting if it pays for it?

Toughness isn’t something red is unable to deal with, it’s just something it needs mana to deal with. X spells are a staple red thing. Green, in contrast, has to rely on creatures to deal with other creatures. It isn’t allowed to get creature kill spells that don’t involve it’s own creatures.

Spells vs. Creatures

New 31 Jul 2017 Asked by mrpopogod 123 Comments

A good illustration of spells vs. creatures; player A has a deck of only Forest and Hornet Sting, player B has a deck of only Mountain and Mons's Goblin Raiders. Both business cards cost one and deal one damage. But Mons's sticks around and that player is going to win the majority of those matchups. That's why the days of creatureless decks being a major force required spells to be much better than creatures.

I’m not sure this counts as a “good illustration”. : ) How about this? I make a deck out of only noncreatures and you make a deck out of only creatures. We have all of Magic to chose from and no card limitations. Who’s going to win? I’ll help you out. It’s going to be me, because the best noncreature spells are light years better than the best creature spells.
