Keyword Action Considerations

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by masu-lw 10 Comments

Ever since Mill was made an official keyword action in M21, have there been any other Magic colloquialisms/slang you've also wanted to the same for? (For example, writing "Force" as a keyword on cards instead of "rather than pay this spell's mana cost.")

I have never heard people use the term “Force” outside of the specific card Force of Will, and even then, quite rarely. Is this commonly used?

Favorite Card Insights

New 14 Dec 2023 Asked by shadowkinggray 42 Comments

Hello Mark. I redeemed my coveted birthday rite several days ago, but it seems to have gotten caught up in the shuffle. I figured I wouldn't submit it on my birthday, which was the 6th, because a lot was going on then in Magic. My query was for any interesting tidbit about my favorite card in the game, Malefic Scythe from M21, and, provided you had nothing about it, instead the card that got me into the game, Errant Ephemeron from Time Spiral. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

When we first designed suspend creatures, we started with familiar vanilla and French vanilla ones. Errant Ephemeron was Air Elemental, and one of the first ones we designed. Happy Belated Birthday!

Garruk's Homeplane

New 02 Dec 2023 Asked by melusthesorcerer 28 Comments

Can I get a maybe on Garruk's homeplane being one of the three planes we'll visit in "Tennis"? After all we have seen it on at least one card: Garruk's showcase forest in the Core Set 2021. :)

Maybe. : )

Core Sets' Absence

New 23 Mar 2023 Asked by suzkia 47 Comments

Hello MaRo, first off, I want to give a shout-out to the people who are writing the lore of MTG right now. I am a huge fan! MoM is hyping me up a lot, especially the bonus cards (I play Arena as well as Modern, so it's always cool to have extra cards haha). However, I've been wondering for a while if the rest of the MTG community feels the same way. I miss the core sets in Magic more and more, as I feel like they are part of the game's identity - at least that's my personal opinion. I wanted to ask you what led to their removal since Core Set 2021, and if I could make a wish for 2024 or 2025, it would be for Magic to have them again. Anyway, great job on the designs and thanks again for all the amazing new designs you give us!"

Not enough players were interested in buying it.

Learning Draft Skills

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by monobak 20 Comments

My playgroup has been debating how many hours it would take to teach someone who has never played magic to become an average drafter (including deck building and playing). To focus the question, we constrained the premise M21. Our answers range from several hours, to 40 hours, to more. Care to weigh in?

I’m not sure what “average drafter” means.

Mana Cost Trends

New 07 Nov 2022 Asked by moonsliceman 39 Comments

Has R&D soured on WW, UU, BB, RR, GG type mana costs? The last time a card with cost BB was in standard was M21, and the rest aren't much more common.

We use it at higher rarities for constructed, but have moved away from it at common for mana play issues in limited.

Upkeep Phase Adjustments

New 07 Oct 2022 Asked by coboney 35 Comments

Why have things moved away from upkeep to the start of the precombat main phase in cases like Saga's, or the M21 Shrine cycle?

We prefer you drawing your card first.

Pet Planeswalker Concept

New 30 Aug 2022 Asked by wildcardgamez 158 Comments

Can I ask for a Planeswalker who is just like, a cat or a dog? And not like a Leonin or something, like the kinds of cats and dogs we saw in M21. I just love the idea of a little fluffy dog or cat being a recurring character who travels the multiverse. Would probably be an instant favorite for many.

Anyone else want such a thing?

Shrine Cards Timing Logic

New 14 Feb 2022 Asked by jjarnone-blog 39 Comments

Can you go into the reasoning behind why each of the cycles of shrines trigger at different parts of the turn? (CHK at upkeep, NEO at end step, and and three of the M21 at beginning of precombat main-phase)

I think they decided to have the timing maximize with the effect.

Haiku in Flavor Text

Non-story Planeswalkers

New 23 Nov 2021 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 51 Comments

When you introduce a new planeswalker in a non-story set (like Wrenn in Modern Horizons or Basri in Core Set 2021) do you know if the creative team usually already has plans to use them in the story in the future? Or do they then just get added to the pool of planeswalkers that can be pulled from as needed?

It can be either. We knew we were using Kaya when she got introduced, but didn’t know about Wrenn.

Reprinting Standards Example

Frequency of Prowess in Sets

New 20 Oct 2021 Asked by grey-poland 20 Comments

If prowess is deciduous, can it be used on one card in a set, or does ot mean it has to be a sub/theme like in M21?

It could be used on one card, but usually if a set can use it, it shows up on more than one card.

Dogs on the Beeble Scale

New 11 Oct 2021 Asked by hey-howsitgoin 39 Comments

As of last update, the Dog creature type is an 8 on the beeble scale due to it being set there before M21. Where would you say Dogs are on the beeble scale today?

Dog is now a 3.

Yearly Core Sets Revival

New 06 Oct 2021 Asked by themartiangeek 64 Comments

Why aren't core sets a yearly thing anymore? M19, M20, and M21 were all good.

The issue isn’t our ability to make them. It’s do players prefer them more than things we could make in their place?

Re-Introduction to Game Changes

New 19 Aug 2021 Asked by travnar 38 Comments

Hi Mark, I'm recently getting back into Magic after quitting around Khans of Tarkir. While it might be me just getting familiar again, the game has changed a lot and it's hard to keep up with all the products and how standard rotation is now. Any suggestion?

There are a bunch of new products. But you’re in luck when it comes to rotation. It works the same as it did back in Khans of Tarkir. Standard is every premier set (what we called “Standard-legal” back then) for a two-year span. As it did when you last played, the Magic “year” starts with the fall set, and that’s when the cards from the Magic “year” two years ago rotates out.For example, when Midnight Hunt comes out in September, the Magic “year” from two years ago (Throne of Eldraine, Theros Beyond Death, Ikoria & Core Set 2021) rotate out of Standard.

Amusing MH2 White Card

New 15 May 2021 Asked by petruscaex 30 Comments

I know it's too early for specific questions but as White is making me more and more happy with each set since Core Set 2021 may I ask you if there's any White card in MH2 that will probably make players amused?

Maybe. : )

Question about Sanctums from M21

New 19 Mar 2021 Asked by trevthetree 43 Comments

I know you're expecting a lot of Strixhaven questions, but I have one about Kamigawa. Are the Sanctums from M21 located on Kamigawa? If so, do they have their own Myojins linked to them?

I believe they are on Kamigawa, but I don’t know about the second question.

Future Action Keywords Shortening

New 21 Feb 2021 Asked by goldencrustacean 75 Comments

So, in M21 Mill was added in place of "put the top card if your library into your graveyard", now with Strixhaven, we've changed Shuffle your library to shuffle, and CMC to Mana Value. Is this a sign that more and more actions and characteristics are going to be shortened in the future?

We’re always looking for clean upgrades.

Pointing Out Prowess

Good point.
