Coalition Victory

Un-games and New Colours

New 15 Jul 2022 Asked by jimmycomments 41 Comments

When playing un-games, does the game add new colours as spells are played or does gold (or pink etc) exist whether or not the cards are played? I'm wondering for the purposes of things like Coalition Victory. My assumption is that until someone plays, say, Sword of D&D, Coalition Victory would look for WUBRG, but once Sword of D&D is played, it would also require gold.

Yes, the color doesn’t exist as a game color until it shows up in that game.

I’ve been wondering
Is it truely impossible to make a planeswalker urza card and a phyrexian form yawgmoth card with out making either a instant win like “Coalition Victory”?

No. A card can capture just part of someone’s life.

If / when, Coalition Victory reprint in a Standard set?

Major If. It references a particular story point, so a Standard reprint seems a long shot.

Oops, I was talking about Coalition Victory.

Guildpact Card Form

New 20 Jul 2018 Asked by kandykidzero 39 Comments

Hi Mark! Just wanted to say as a long time player, it is a shame that we could never see "The Guildpact" as an Enchant World card. Are you able to answer what would be more likely by today's standard - a sorcery (Coalition Victory comes to mind), artifact (if Jace were to find a way to not be a living version), or an enchantment (on the world, but not an 'enchant world')?

Enchant World has implied mechanical definition, one which we no longer support in new cards.

Coalition Victory Rules

Regarding Coalition Victory and Un-sets: I interpret “a creature of each color” to mean the 5 normal colors of magic + all colors of creatures currently in play. So if an opponent controls a “Gold Dragon Token” then you also need a gold creature to win with Coalition Victory. But if there are no “funny” colored creatures in play then you don’t need those colors to win with Coalition Victory. I imagine “Barry’s Land” would work much the same way. I beleive this maximizes fun for both players.

Coalition Victory just needs the basic five colors.

While playing Coalition Victory in an Un-Legal format, do you now need to have a "Gold" creature in play to win?

No. You only need the normal five colors.

Alternative Victory Experiences

There are many ways to win a Magic game. Which alternative win conditions have you experienced? I experienced library out, poison, Mortal Combat, and Coalition Victory!

I have won with most of them probably because I like alt win conditions. Have you won with Now I Know My ABC’s?

Land Tokens Design Space

New 02 Feb 2013 Asked by mr-nater 5 Comments

Have land tokens ever been approached by design? Is it too similar to Eldrazi spawn tokens? Or is there just no flavor for the representaion of lands as tokens? Might be a way of getting Barry's land into print (as a token). Though, I'm not too sure it would work well with cards like coalition victory. Regardless, It seems as if there might be some design space there.

We’ve actually explored it a few times. We always worry that it will be too hard to tell which lands been tapped.

Invasion Set Repute

New 19 Aug 2012 Asked by baeda735 3 Comments

I recently finished assembling a scrapbook collection of the full Invasion set - my personal favorite set (maybe partly because it came out just when I was getting into Magic for the first time, but definitely partly because I love multicolor design - go go Coalition Victory!). I was wondering how you would rank that set in terms of design?

I mark Invasion as the start of the Third Age of Design so I rank it very highly historically speaking when it comes to the evolution of Magic design.
