Blacker Lotus

Karn vs Blacker Lotus

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by tinpinweird 19 Comments

Un-rules question: what happens in the interaction between Karn the great creator and blacker lotus? Can you put the pieces in your hand, and if so are they cast together or a separate cards?

Karn can only get a single whole card, not pieces of a card.

Un-cards Power Nine

New 18 Feb 2024 Asked by rocketknightgeek 40 Comments

Discounting Blacker Lotus and Gleemox, what would you consider the silver border/acorn 'power nine' to be?

The most powerful Un-card is Richard Garfield PhD, but I don’t know the whole top nine.

Use of Silver Border Cards

New 03 Oct 2020 Asked by 1aughing-matter-blog 45 Comments

You said the other day that silver border cards are considered lesser by players, but I just wanted you to know that the folks in my lgbt magic discord server are organizing a small silver border/playtest card legacy league (with a banlist, because we can't have any blacker lotus, lol) and it's been a lot of fun brewing! I personally am a big fan of using silver border in constructed, even if that wasn't the intent. They're still fun cards. And a lot of them are pretty darn playable too!

I always encourage more casual players to consider adding some silver border cards that feel appropriate. There are a lot of real fun Un-cards.

Gotcha Scale for Ripping Cards

Where does ripping cards (Blacker Lotus and Chaos Confetti) fall on the Gotcha Scale?

A 10. They were pretty behated.

Richard Garfield Card Usage

New 22 May 2020 Asked by tljwasgreat 23 Comments

What can Richard Garfield Ph.D do with augment cards? Can he make them a suspend card like lotus bloom? Can he make them a black lotus or a mox card. If I'm mindlavering someone who has him in play, can I make him make one into a blacker lotus and tear up their card (obviously there'd be social repercussions independent of any rulings). Can I cast them as something that costs X? Or another Augment? Can I make lands into other lands?

Richard Garfield, PhD can’t do anything with cards that lack a mana cost.

Blacker Lotus Use

New 28 Dec 2019 Asked by wisp788 24 Comments

If I rip up Blacker Lotus and remove the pieces from the game, if I, for example, cast Pull from Eternity, do I retrieve all the pieces? Can/do I tape/glue them back together? If I'm only allowed to retrieve one piece at a time, do they still function as whole cards? Or would I have to grab all 4 pieces? Finally, if I don't tape/glue them back together, do I rip just one piece into 4, or do I have to do that to each piece? Sorry for the long question, and thanks in advance!

Once it’s ripped up, you can never use it again even if you can get the pieces back,

Unpopular Cards Insight

New 09 Nov 2019 Asked by mrpopogod 118 Comments

"our research shows players aren’t fond of permanently defacing their Magic cards" - You mean there aren't a lot of Ironman Magic playgroups anymore?

No. Fun story. We did market research on Unglued. I was told that the two most unpopular cards were Blacker Lotus and Chaos Confetti by a large margin. The data people doing the market research said that they cross referenced all the various elements - art, name, flavor text - but couldn’t find any correlative connection between these two cards. I said, “Don’t worry. I got it.”

Lotus Variants in Un-sets

New 14 Jun 2019 Asked by completeindie 37 Comments

Have you ever planned on putting a Black Lotus in an Unset (aside from Blacker Lotus? Maybe only on watermarks? Or silver borders?)

“Have you ever thought of doing the thing, except for the one time you did the thing?” : )We have talked about others Lotus variants in different Un-sets.

Botania Easter Eggs

New 19 Apr 2018 Asked by petra-the-kat 44 Comments

More on Botania (from Minecraft), there's also a Blacker Lotus (which adds more mana) and the Planestrider's sash (it says if you go slow, you're a plainswalker). There's probably more.

Thanks.

Conceding Rules

New 03 Dec 2017 Asked by emeraldragon17 67 Comments

Putting stop to this silly combo if it hasn’t been mentioned already. Can Franky Peanuts stop your opponent from conceding in order for you to turn their cards into Blacker Lotus with Mirrorweave, then Mindslaver them and rip up their cards.

Franky Peanuts cannot stop a player from conceding. No card can stop a player from conceding.

Blacker Lotus Usage

New 12 Nov 2017 Asked by annorax 30 Comments

Will the Great Silver-Bordered Oracle Update (Silvoracle?) finally replace Blacker Lotus's tearing up with something a bit less physically destructive? I've got a Blacker Lotus in my cube, have had to replace it a couple times, and would like something a bit more definitive than house rules to fall back on to make sure I don't have to buy another one ever again.

The card requires you tearing it up. You can have whatever house rules you like though.

Vintage in Unstructed

New 18 Sep 2017 Asked by floorlicker 27 Comments

Why are vintage legal cards not allowed in Unstructed? I wanna put a black lotus in play next to my blacker lotus...

You can do that in your casual Un-constructed play. The sanctioned format uses the Legacy banned list.

Silver-Boarded Oracle Update

New 24 Jul 2017 Asked by annorax 36 Comments

Will Tabak's silver-bordered Oracle update be removing the "rip this card up into tiny pieces" mechanic? It seems like "remove this from your card pool" would be a much better way to reduce the bad feelings that come from having to tear up a Blacker Lotus, and completely eliminates any issues with having to tear up someone else's Blacker Lotus in Cube games.

Oracle clarifies but we try not to functionally change the card. You can have house rules not to rip cards if you like.

Blacker Lotus Assessment

Blacker Lotus Legacy

New 16 Feb 2017 Asked by danvogelsong 40 Comments

Have you thought of return the self destructive element of Blacker Lotus to limited commons in a desire to combat collection creep?

Blacker Lotus was the number one most disliked card on Unglued according to our market research. Chaos Confetti was number two.

Un-Rules for Ripped Cards

New 14 Feb 2017 Asked by deg99 20 Comments

Un-Rules Question. If a card requires me to rip the card up (e.g. Blacker Lotus) am I required to replace it with another card before game 2?

No. The Un-rules allow you to have less cards for the remainder of the tournament if you rip up a card as part of its effect. You are allowed to replace it with the same card though between games.

Pretty sure Processors and graveyard shenanigans can't touch a used Blacker Lotus or Chaos Confetti.

Fine point.

Handling Opponent's Blacker Lotus

New 24 Oct 2015 Asked by melodiesofliv 22 Comments

We seem to be on the subject so I'll resubmit my Un-rules question: I put Blacker Lotus into play. An opponent gains control of it. It seems tearing BL up is part of the cost, so how is that handled given I don't want my card torn up by an opponent?

You are allowed to concede at any time meaning the answer to not having your opponent tear your card is to lose the game.

Correct Tearing Method

New 24 Oct 2015 Asked by magicjudge 29 Comments

Un-rules question: Can I "tear" Chaos Confetti and/or Blacker Lotus into a single piece when I use their abilities?

That is not “tearing” under even the loosest of definitions.
