The Scarab God

March of theMachine Pairings

New 24 Nov 2023 Asked by brromo 48 Comments

To my understanding the March of the Machiene Tag-Team cards were suposed to be "Unconventinal parings, showing the desperation of the plane", yet on Amonkhet, Djeru, Hazoret, the Scarab God, & the Locust God fighting together, the card is Djeru and Hazoret, a pair that previously worked together. Did set design need a red-white legend? Was the no good ideas for a cross factional parring? I have the simmiler problems with Errant and Giada, Kogla and Yidaro, & Zimone and Dina.

We tried to make pairings that made for fun designs. It wasn’t crucial that every pairing involved characters that had never worked together before.

Gods Not Eternalized

Why weren't the Locust God and the Scarab God eternalized and brought to Ravnica?

I don’t know. Bolas didn’t feel like it.

White Zombies in Amonkhet

New 11 Feb 2018 Asked by luciferhex 32 Comments

When we return to Amonkhet, how much more support will zombies in white get? Eg a zombie lord that includes white mana or their own bomb rare/mythic like the Scarab God?

White zombies are a thing in Amonkhet, so some. We pushed more towards black Zombie lords in Amonkhet because of the overlap with Shadows over Innistrad.

Scarab God Mechanics

Does Scarab God interact with zombies from Over My Dead Bodies?

No, because at the beginning of your turn, they’re just in your graveyard and aren’t counted by the Scarab God.

Scarab God Mechanic Wording

New 14 Aug 2017 Asked by scrumpledorph 45 Comments

Is there any reason The Scarab God's activated ability couldn't have been worded something akin to "eternalize target creature card in a graveyard" or "Choose target creature card in a graveyard. Eternalize it"? It seems like it'd be a huge flavour win to mention the mechanic on the card.

That’s where the card started, but the rules said, “I don’t think so!”

Legendary Copy Mechanics

New 10 Jul 2017 Asked by melloducky 18 Comments

(L2 Judge)To the Question Mark that was asking about the Scarab God, yes it's still Legendary. If you think of copying effects, it's like you took the card through a copying machine and printed it out. The key difference between normal copy effects is the Scarab God is that it's a copy except for a few attributes, but the supertype doesn't change.

Eternalizing Legendaries

New 09 Jul 2017 Asked by apocalypticvalraven 34 Comments

Hey Mark, you could you please confirm for me whether a Legendary that is "eternalized" by The Scarab God retains the Legendary supertype? I'm assuming so, but I want to be sure.

I don’t definitively know, but assume it’s still legendary. Any judges that know the answer?

Scarab God Wording

Couldn't you have worded the Scarab God as the following? - "2UB: Target creature card in your graveyard gets 'Eternalize 0'. " (0 generic mana)

No, there are issues with granting Eternalize.,

Scarab God Appreciation

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by grenville003-deactivated2017102 55 Comments

Slowclap on the insect 3. After the Scarab God was revealed, I was consumed with combos and synergies until the birds were singing and the night sky was turning blue. Far to often, I tend to see the flaws instead of the magic. These are the type of cards that keep ones mind whirring with possibilities, sparking emails and chats with friends. Now I just need to figure out which one of my sons is the Scorpion and which is the Locust. Thanks for keeping the magic alive with this set.

Glad you like the new Gods.

Scarab God's Mechanic

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by planeswalkerwithtardis 57 Comments

Is there a reason The Scarab God doesn't just "Eternalize" the creature? Seems like a major flavor win if it did and it would avoid confusion about the minor changes between it's ability and eternalize (CMC surviving, the lack of other creature types, etc).

The rules didn’t allow it. We hoped the mechanical overlap conveyed the flavor.

Locust Gods' Design

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by bigsbeh 34 Comments

As an admirer of symmetry and coherence I design, it bugs me (pun very much intended) to no end that the Scorpion Locust Gods both trigger their first ability with their second, but the Scarab god is an upkeep trigger. Can you talk about why this choice was made? I get that as it is, it would probably be too powerful if it triggered any time you activate, but why not tweak it to fit the mold of the other 2 gods?

Form follows function. Making an aesthetic broken card in the end will make more unhappy than happy.

God Synergy Disappointment

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by levi-lottinville-blog 45 Comments

I'll admit I'm disappointed that the scarab god doesn't play with the synergy I saw between scorpion god and locust god. But I like it in a vacuum and be more than happy to build around it.

The Locust God loots and the Scarab God eternalizes (essentially). There’s some synergy.

Zombie Color Mismatch

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by daracaex 48 Comments

The Scarab God is cool. Really cool. Great commander for zombie tribal decks. It's weird though, since zombies in Innistrad are the blue-black ones while zombies on Amonkhet are black-white. Why the mismatch (beyond the obvious that these three gods of destruction had to fit in Bolas colors)?

SPOILERS (MAYBE, IF YOU DIDN’t READ MY COLUMN THIS WEEK) FOR HOUR OF DEVASTATION: The Eternals (the Zombie army Bolas has been making) is black, blue and red.
