Staying Power

Staying Power Variant

New 17 Dec 2023 Asked by obazervazi 25 Comments

Could a more restricted version of Staying Power be printed in black border, like one that only affects increases (and maybe decreases if necessary) to power and toughness?

I don’t think we can do the Staying Power ability exactly. I think the rules can handle something like “if a creature would gain +1 power, instead put a +1/+1 counter on it instead”, but that’s functionally different in a few ways.

Rules and Acorn Cards

New 18 Nov 2023 Asked by yuleooze 47 Comments

How is it that Staying Power can only be acorn, but Riding the Dilu Horse and Nature's Blessing work in the non-acorn rules? Can the rules manager fix this at their whim, but more pressing things are in the way? I'd prefer the solution of Riding and Blessing getting some errata or being made acorn cards but having Staying Power be un-acorned would also satisfy, so long as these are consistent.

The game is capable of making effects that last for the duration of the game. Staying Power’s issue is the rules have issues with making some temporary effects permanent. As is often the case with weird effects, the rules can handle 99% of the issues, but weird corner cases exist and the rules have to handle all cases.

Card Design Philosophy

New 04 Sep 2023 Asked by yuleooze 35 Comments

If Staying Power is firmly silver border, why is Riding the Dilu Horse allowed to exist as it is rather than make it work like a black border card?

A single card can produce an effect that doesn’t end. The problem is certain effects don’t handle being turned into an endless effect well.

Black Board Possibility

New 04 Sep 2023 Asked by livbrazilian 22 Comments

could "Staying Power" be a black board card? it seems to work on the rules, but if i'm mistaken, why not?

It does not. I tried. It’s why it ended up with a silver border.

Sorcery Bestow Challenge

New 19 Dec 2022 Asked by hitek1208 39 Comments

Can I request an ability that does to sorceries what bestow does to creatures? I want a rules workable staying power

If we had a rules workable staying power, it wouldn’t be acorn/silver bordered. Trust me, I explored getting it to work in the rules numerous times. In Unfinity, I tried again, and Jess (Dunks, the Rules Manager) basically said, “Nope.”

Rule Support Limits

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by lizardwizard100 38 Comments

Can the rules support “effects that last ‘until end of turn’ last indefinitely” ?

No. It’s why Staying Power was in Unhinged. I originally made it for a premier set, but the rules couldn’t handle it.

Possibility of Permanent Transformations

New 02 Jun 2022 Asked by cyanidalshark 48 Comments

Is there a possibility for there to be ability akin to:"If a permanent would stop being a creature at end of turn, it stays a creature?"Or the opposite side of that:"If a noncreature permanent would become a creature, it doesn't?"

Staying Power had to be silver-bordered because it didn’t work in the rules, so I’m dubious about any effect doesn’t end stuff. The latter seems pretty narrow, but I think it works.

Staying Power and Mindslaver

New 02 Apr 2022 Asked by lgosvse 30 Comments

Silver-border rules question. If Staying Power is in play, and someone uses Mindslaver, do they just get to control the other player for the rest of the game?

No. Mindslaver uses neither “until end of turn” or “this turn”.

Functionality of Staying Power

New 19 Jan 2022 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 27 Comments

If the rules manager said Staying Power worked in black border, would you do it or would the memory issues make it too impractical to play with?

It actually causes some rules problems. The memory issues will also be a problem, but it’s possible we could have solved that with something like a counter.

Staying Power's Black Border

New 18 Jan 2022 Asked by quantext 33 Comments

Could Staying Power work in black border/non-acorn?

I tried putting it in a black border set. The Rules Manager said I couldn’t. That’s how it ended up in an Un-set.

Staying Power in Unfinity

New 16 Dec 2021 Asked by ricardolongo 34 Comments

One of my favorite un-cards is Staying Power. Would it be acorn or eternal if it were on Unfinity?

No. I tried to do that card in a normal set and was told there were issues with it, so I put it in an Un-set.

White Unhinged Card Mechanisms

New 08 Dec 2021 Asked by pontemosca 25 Comments

Hi Maro, i just did an excercise. Looking at all the White Unhinged cards most of them fall into acorn cards due to: verbal/phisical component, fractions, checking artist or something black border doesnt, and giving cards to opponent. Only Look at Me, I'm R&D and Staying Power could work in black border rules but they get really messy.

Unhinged’s mechanics are all very acorn, so it isn’t the best sample.

Un-Sanctioned Game Experience

New 06 Jul 2021 Asked by jurrasicoresposts 49 Comments

I just wanted to say in my first game of Un-Sanctioned I used Franky Peanuts and Staying power to wonderful effect to lock down the whole game. Please administer High fives to whoever put both of those in the set :)

As I created both of those cards, I will high five myself.

Pippa's Reroll Rules

New 04 Apr 2021 Asked by veenilla 28 Comments

Un-Rules Question: If I am using a die as a memory aid (for example, to remember the boost from Growth Spurt being maintained through Staying Power), is that die (and it's associated value) a valid target for Pippa to reroll?

No. Pippa can only reroll dice (and dice creature tokens) that are rolled by spells and effects.

Staying Power Query

New 31 Jan 2020 Asked by ezxdz 48 Comments

Staying Power seems like it works fine in black border what kinds of rules baggage stops it from. Moving from silver border

I tried it in black border. The Rules Manager, at the time, said it didn’t work. It’s why I made it in silver border. I’m not 100% sure what the problem is, but my guess is having effects not end causes problems if they aren’t designed to not end.

White Card Advantage

New 22 Jun 2019 Asked by lootthekey 57 Comments

If White cant draw cards, then I think the best way to give White card advantage without actually giving them card advantage would be to either a.) give them more ways to reuse supplies they have already drawn via graveyard mechanics or b.) give White more power in the activated abilities of their permanents, letting their permanents have more staying power and feel like your board is your hand.

Those are both potential answers.

Unstable Card Design

New 06 Sep 2017 Asked by zemyla 39 Comments

Will Unstable give us more cards like Staying Power and Yet Another Aether Vortex, where they're in Un-land because they literally can't work in black border?

Absolutely. I guarantee they’ll be numerous cards where people will ask “Why can’t this be black border?” And I’ll reply, “Black border can’t handle it.”

Staying Power Interaction

New 23 Aug 2017 Asked by petra-the-kat 21 Comments

Un-rules question: If you have Staying Power in play and resolve Teferi's Protection do your permanents never phase back in?

Staying Power only affects things that last “until end of turn” or “this turn”, so no, the two cards don’t interact.

Staying Power's Design Challenge

New 15 Apr 2017 Asked by contrarianqueen 25 Comments

Could "Staying Power" work in black border?

No. I first tried to put it in black border and it ended up in silver border because it couldn’t be done in black border.

Mindslaver Gameplay Mechanics

New 17 Oct 2016 Asked by patpov85-blog 28 Comments

Un-rules question: Say I have a Frankie Peanuts and Stopping Power, so my opponents have to abide by their answers forever. I ask my opponent, Player A, if he/she will attack me next turn, Player A says no. Another opponent, Player B, then Mindslavers Player A (who answered the question). On Player A's next turn, can he/she attack me? Is it Player B not abiding by the answer or Player A?

Player B does not have to abide by the promises of Player A when Mindslaving Player A. Note that Staying Power only makes things last until the end of that game.
