Consideration of Soulshift Mechanic

New 05 Feb 2022 Asked by ellemurfrances 34 Comments

Was Soulshift ever considered for Kamigawa Neon Dinasty? I think the conflict with the worlds merging seemed like a great opportunity to have it back. And was Arcane taken in consideration when talking about old vs new?

We didn’t want to focus on Spirits and didn’t have a mechanic that made Arcane relevant.

Disturb and Soulshift Interaction

Does Disturb work with the other Spirit mechanic, Soulshift? Once in the graveyard, is the back half seen?

Only the front half is visible in the graveyard.

Kamigawa's Future Keyword Mechanics

New 25 Aug 2021 Asked by james-stors 61 Comments

Now that Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty has been announced, where would you put all the original block's keyword mechanics on the Storm Scale for this set? Those mechanics being: Bushido, Soulshift, Splice, Ninjutsu (My Favorite), Offering, Channel, Sweep, and Epic.

I’m not saying nothing is returning, but be aware that the greatest weakness of original Kamigawa was it’s mechanical components. As I’ve talked about on this blog many times (reinforced from feedback from many of you), a return is not leaning heavily on the named keywords/ability words of the original visit.

Commander Product Viability

New 21 Dec 2020 Asked by paladin8000 37 Comments

Mark, a commander product based on a non-revisited plane, being on plan or tribal mechanics, could it not be good enough to be viable? (Example: Commander Kamigawa; Deck Samurai or Bushido, Ninja or Ninjitsu, Spirit or Soulshift and Orochis Token)

It depends on how many new cards the deck has and whether enough cards pre-exist to make sense with that theme in the right colors for the deck. There are also larger questions about the product line as a whole.

Storm Scale Ratings

Hey, just a question for the Storm Scale: Why aren't there ratings for Channel, Sweep, [Noun] offering, and Soulshift?

Not everything has been put on the scale yet.

Zubera Honden Trivia

New 20 Jan 2019 Asked by panvoid-blog 32 Comments

It’s my birthday today! (The 20th) Can I get some sweet Zubera or Honden trivia?

I believe the Zuberas were made as a Kindle variant that went on creatures and only counted other Zuberas that died the same turn as it did. They were all Spirits, so they played into the large Human vs. Spirit conflict of the story. The card’s were made to play with the soulshift mechanic and things that let you sacrifice creatures.Happy Birthday!

Soulshift Valuation

New 06 Mar 2017 Asked by jcat-jmeow 21 Comments

Why did you guys overvalue soulshift that much?

The creative was a war between the humans and the spirits. We were trying mechanically to give definition to the spirits and play up three reverence for the dead.

Complexity Points Explained

New 29 Dec 2015 Asked by godhead-of-ska-deactivated20200 11 Comments

Earlier you mentioned soulshift taking up a lot of complexity points for a set. Could you elaborate on what those are?

It’s just a conceptual way to think of a set having a set amount of complexity.

Soulshift Mechanic Complexity

New 29 Dec 2015 Asked by retrofrog2 10 Comments

Could we ever see Soulshift again? Or a mechanic that is similar to it in the future?

It caused a lot of confusion, so if it returned it would take up a lot of the complexity points for the set.

Spirits Trivia

New 06 Oct 2015 Asked by houseatlantik 22 Comments

Hi Mark! Today's my birthday, and I was wondering if you have any trivia on my favourite creature type, Spirits. Thanks for everything you do!

Spirits have existed from the early days but the block that really put them on the map was Champions of Kamigawa. It had a major “Spirit matters” theme including a mechanic, Soulshift. Happy Birthday!

Regretted Keyword

New 14 Jul 2014 Asked by infamousbobertjoe 16 Comments

Which keyword do you regret the most? I imagine it would either be one of the absurdly strong ones, such as storm, or one of the extremely niche ones, such as Soulshift.

I regret gotcha the most. I don’t get to make Un-sets all that often, so messing one up hurts.
