Soldier of Fortune

First Created Cards

Do you remember what the first card you made that got printed was

It was three cards in Alliances: Gustha’s Scepter, Library of Lat-Nam, and Soldier of Fortune. I also named Force of Will. I didn’t like the name it had, knew it was going to be the hot card from the set, and said it needed a better name. The person in charge of the name said, “Come up with a better name and we’ll change it,” so I did.

Confusion Over Islandfish Jasconius

New 22 Jan 2022 Asked by nerdyhologrampizza 51 Comments

“R&D Secret Lair only lets the card play as written. It doesn’t change the rules of the game. That means it allows Islandfish Jasconius to be an Island (and again it not being a land keeps it from tapping for blue)” what? How is IFJ an island, even with R&D secret lair? It has island in its name. But it’s a creature. Swamp Mosquito isn’t a swamp. Soldier of Fortune isn’t a soldier. That seems a little out there, even for acorn.

All versions of the card have Island Fish as the printed creature type (it’s just Fish in Oracle). 🐿 - Ah, Alpha.

Library Shuffle Colors

New 05 Jan 2019 Asked by jimharbor 46 Comments

What colors get "Target player shuffles their library?" Thanks for answering our questions sir

That’s not an effect we want to do anymore. Red did it on the one card with just that affect (Alliances’ Soldier of Fortune- one of my earliest designs, by the way).

Soldier of Fortune Reprint

New 08 Jul 2015 Asked by mrpopogod 21 Comments

Does R&D's recent leaning away from effects that cause library shuffling mean I should give up hope in a Soldier of Fortune reprint?

Of possible reprints, Soldier of Fortune is low. Little trivia - Soldier of Fortune (along with Gustha’s Scepter and Library of Lat-nam) is the first design I did to see print.

What was the first set you designed cards for that made it to print? (Or; what is the first card you designed that saw print in a Magic expansion?)

Shuffling Effect Preferences

What color do you believe would get an effect that makes their opponents shuffle their library? Which color do you believe could get an effect that makes you shuffle your library every turn without looking at cards at all?

In Alliances, we did it in red on a card called Soldier of Fortune. It’s not an ability we currently wish to do. We barely like making you shuffle for an advantage.

Wouldn't Maro be your first design that saw print since it filled a hole in Mirage?

The question was which card was designed earliest not printed earliest. Printed earliest are three cards in Alliances (Gustha’s Scepter, Soldier of Fortune and Library of Lat-Nam).

Library Shuffle Mechanic

What slice of the color pie is forcing a player to shuffle their library?

Once upon a time it was red (Soldier of Fortune in Alliances) but now it’s only used on cards that do things like force items to be shuffled into the library as we no longer let you just force shuffling especially repeatedly as people were using the ability abusively.

Red Shuffle Mechanic

Can we see red do targetted card-shuffle? Flavor-wise, it appeals to red's randomness. Mechanically, it messes up ponder and tutor effects,

We have been trying to cut back on shuffle effects so we’re less likely to create a card that shuffles just for the sake of shuffling.  If you’re willing to play older cards, Alliances has a card called Soldier of Fortune that does exactly this. (Trivia note: One of the first cards I ever designed to see print.)

Soldier of Fortune Future

Why wouldn't Soldier of Fortune be allowed anymore? I rather like that ability, and would love to see more of it (especially as a counter to library shenanigans). Not the name, mind, as it doesn't seem at all mercenary-y.

R&D has cracked down extensively on deck shuffling so a card that’s only purpose is deck shuffling is not coming back any time soon.

Worst Card Design

What's the worst card you ever designed that saw print that wasn't from Urza's block?

It depends on what axis of bad you’re talking about. One of the first cards I ever made, Soldier of Fortune in Alliances, is a card we wouldn’t even print any more.

What was the first card you designed?

The first cards I designed that made it to print were Gustha’s Scepter, Lat-nam’s Legacy and Soldier of Fortune from Alliances. The card that I made the earliest which ebetually make it into print was Scragnoth from Tempest.
