Side Quest

Phyrexian Storyline Length

New 16 Dec 2022 Asked by ghostlygideon 71 Comments

I feel like the Pyrexian storyline is too short. Vorinclex only got a cameo on Kaldheim and then it took 3 sets off. Jin Gitaxias and the NEO storyline were great and felt like the real beginning of the story. New Capenna felt like a bonus side quest, not a central piece, and then we're immediately into the main battle and resolution in only 4 sets. Why wasn't the story given more "screen time" to flesh things out more?

The number one note we got from the Bolas Arc was “it was too long”. We’re trying to find a balance.

Ulgrotha's Role

New 28 Oct 2022 Asked by parkmaniatheoriginal 34 Comments

Since I suspect you'll be more than slightly busy tomorrow, I'd like to invoke my birthday trivia tonight:Hit me up with anything Ulgrotha related, and on a side quest, do you think there's any chance the plane might get integrated into Innistrad a la Rath and Dominaria?

While we retroactively made Arabian Nights on Rabiah, Ulgrotha was the first expansion purposefully set on a plane other than Dominaria. It was greatly influenced by the cards from Alpha, the designers thought were popular. We did talk in very early Innistrad design if the plane was supposed to be Ulgrotha, but it had existing elements that didn’t really fit with what we wanted for top-down gothic horror world (like Australian-inspired Minotaur). There’s never been talk of merging Innistrad and Ulgrotha.Happy Birthday!

Unfinity Games and Silverborder Games

will unfinity games count as silverborder games for "Side Quest" and others?

Yes. Those will be errated to games using silver border and/or acorn cards.

If I wanted to for some strange reason could I target my opponent with Side Quest?

Sure.

Targeting Side Quest Query

New 29 Jul 2021 Asked by pilovingjoe 23 Comments

I am building a silver border cube for my play group and was wondering, can you target yourself with side quest to just give 2 +1/+1 counters? And if not, what if a mirror is in the room?

Sure. You don’t even need a mirror.

Dicey Side Quest Scenario

New 11 Jul 2021 Asked by righteousforest 36 Comments

Un-rules question: My cube has some silver border cards, but there's few enough that a player could easily draft an entirely black-border deck without even trying. If two players who drafted such a deck are in one match, could a player in another match send a creature to that game with Side Quest?

A “silver-bordered game” is defined as any game where at least one silver-bordered card is played in at least one deck. If two-players are playing a match your cube and neither one has a silver-bordered card in their deck, you can’t send a creature to them with Side Quest.

Set in Different Planes

New 25 Dec 2020 Asked by szwanger 42 Comments

About a set that takes place on two different planes, does War of the Spark qualify? The story had a side quest where some planeswalkers went to Amonkhet.

I don’t think that’s what was being asked. Technically, it also had a card set on Bolas’s Meditation Realm.

Silver-border Rules Query

New 02 May 2020 Asked by lgosvse 31 Comments

Silver-bordered rules question. Side Quest says to send a card to another "silver-bordered game". If I cast Glamerdye to change one color word to another, changing "silver" to "black", can I then affect real black-bordered games of Magic, just to mess with tournament players?

That doesn’t work as there is a meta rule that silver border games can’t mess with black border games.

Adventure Mechanic Inspiration

New 06 Sep 2019 Asked by arthurviijuliuspendragon-blog 27 Comments

Hi, so the adventure mechanic is really great. I love the sequencing and options it endeavors and have enjoyed playing it in the brawl event on arena. It reminds me a little of the card ‘side quest’ from unstable, which had that similar idea of sending a card on an adventure. Is this just a coincidence or was that card an inspiration for this mechanic?

I do not believe that was the inspiration.

Baron Side Quest

New 14 Jun 2018 Asked by askmaro 21 Comments

What if Baron goes on a side quest?

Changing zones restarts him at 5 and the person you give him to only has a turn before he returns, so it’s possible but very difficult.

Side Quest Mechanics

New 13 Dec 2017 Asked by moone513 23 Comments

If you send a creature with an ETB effect on a Side Quest, does it trigger it's own effect in the other player's game? (You said previously it would trigger when it returned to your game)

Yes, it does.

Exile Mechanic

New 12 Dec 2017 Asked by aesir-blade 21 Comments

I asked about GO TO JAIL-ing a creature my opponent received due to a side quest---you gave an answer as if it were a Pacifism effect, but the card isn't an Aura, it's a Banishing Light-style effect. Having read the FAQ, it looks like the creature goes into exile, but does the "at the beginning of the upkeep of the exiled card's owner" trigger happen in the other game? I'm guessing not?

Oops. It’s not an aura. At the beginning of its owner’s turn, they get it back. It doesn’t matter if it’s in exile.

GO TO JAIL Rules

New 11 Dec 2017 Asked by aesir-blade 28 Comments

If I GO TO JAIL a creature an opponent has received from Side Quest, is it sent back immediately, exiled permanently, or does its owner in its original game have to roll to get it out?

Auras and augments travel back with the creature. They return to you whenever one of the game ends.

Creature Return Timing

New 10 Dec 2017 Asked by moone513 38 Comments

Doesn't your side quest creature return at the start of your turn, before your untap step? That's what the card says, but you guys played it weird on game knights.

At the beginning of your turn it comes back so it untaps. We messed that up on “Game Knights”.

Augment and Side Quests

New 10 Dec 2017 Asked by torschlusspanikattack 52 Comments

What happens if you augment a creature on a side quest?

It stays with the creature and returns to the original game. Same for an aura. If either of the games end, the Augment/aura goes to its owner’s graveyard.

Side Quest Mechanics

New 07 Dec 2017 Asked by superc0w 34 Comments

Does side quest trigger ETB abilities? I noticed you didn't compliment each other during Game Knights, after passing Chivalrous Chevalier.

It does. The video was edited down, so small things that don’t really matter don’t appear.

Legal Game Condition

New 05 Dec 2017 Asked by calamitouscube 23 Comments

Is it legal in silver border rules for me to sit down with two decks and play them against each other so that I can use Side Quest to give creatures to people in an Unstable draft? I don't know if me playing two decks against each other counts as a "legal" game for the purpose of using Side Quest this way.

You need an actual opponent who is not you.

Magic Subgame Limits

New 26 Nov 2017 Asked by walruscustard-blog 21 Comments

If you're playing a magic subgame (say, with The Countdown Is At One), can you play Side Quest and target your ~*past self*~ in the previous game you set aside?

No, sadly you can’t. The games don’t co-exist.

Targeting with Side Quest

New 23 Nov 2017 Asked by combatdonut 79 Comments

Can I cast Side Quest and target myself? Technically, I fulfill the requirements.

You can technically target yourself. We did that so games not near another silver-bordered game wouldn’t indefinitely stall, but if there’s another silver-bordered game and you choose yourself, I publicly call you out as not embracing the Un-experience. You heard, me. I’m calling you out!

Unstable Draft Format

New 19 Nov 2017 Asked by gladiuslucix-deactivated2019082 28 Comments

For a 4 person Unstable draft, do you think breaking into duels or a 4 player multiplayer game would be more interesting?

Whichever your group would enjoy more. I lean towards two games because it would allow cards like Side Quest and things with outside assistance to be used.
