Reveillark Card Considerations

New 31 Jul 2022 Asked by alder-iris 22 Comments

does the existence of reveillark affect whether certain creatures can be printed with 2 power or less due to the loops it generates or does that not come up that often?

One card in the past does not dictate how we make cards in the present. If that card causes problems in larger formats, we can ban it.

White's Card Draw

New 22 Jan 2020 Asked by phelgster 72 Comments

Mr. Rosewater, please don't give White card draw. White is my favorite color. I acknowledge that it has shortcomings, but it is fully my belief that White's mechanical identity would not be helped through card draw. Instead, its shortcomings (namely card advantage) can be solved through other means. White has access to tools like Reveillark, Angel of Serenity, and Ignite the Beacon that can easily be used for card advantage instead of watering things down by simply adding cards to your hand.

Our goal is to solve white’s issues in a way that plays into what white cares about philosophically. We have no intent in undermining its weakness.

Reveillark Design Shift

Hi Mark! It's my birthday today, and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on one of my three favorite cards; Sun Titan, Reveillark, or Soul Sculptor?

When I designed Reveillark, it returned creatures with converted mana cost two or less and development changed it to power. One of many examples, where development made a design significantly more powerful. : ) Happy Birthday!

Reveillark Trivia

Today is my birthday and I was hoping to get some trivia on my favorite creature Reveillark?

When I made Revillark, it returned two creatures with a converted mana cost of 2 or less. The lead developer (Mike Turian I believe) changed it to 2 power. Happy Birthday!

White's Versatility

New 14 Jan 2015 Asked by corrfell 71 Comments

Taking the heat off of Blue: Why can White do virtually anything without any drawbacks? It has a monopoly on small, effective creatures (Soldier of the Pantheon, Elite Vanguard, etc) and impressive large creatures (Baneslayer Angel, Reveillark, etc) a hold over coveted keywords (First Strike, Vigilance, Flying, Indestructible, etc) powerful removal (Path of Exile, Journey to Nowhere, Oblivion Ring, etc) and it has control spells like Silence. Black at least pays a price for versatility.

It’s the reason white is fifth in card drawing. It has answers but no way to easily draw more.

If you could leave the battlefield to bring back two small friends you'd be Reveillark Rosewater

Reveillark Design Origins

I'm a gigantic fan of reveillark and i have some questions : do you happen to know who has a hand in his design ? Where can i mail to try to ask for a new art ? Will revoke comme back one day ?

I designed Reveillark with one major difference from his printed version. Mine could get back creatures that had a converted mana cost of two or less. It was changed to power in development.

Reveillark Flavor

New 24 Mar 2012 Asked by pseudolias 3 Comments

You said in a recent answer about Reveillark "I feel it’s a good way to help with white’s army feel. (Note that I believe the flavor here is just more recruits not raising soldiers from the dead.)" but if it's recruiting, and not resurrecting, shouldn't the creatures come from the hand or library? And if you can't do it that way in that colour, then shouldn't the flavor change to fit to a more white style of "resurrection"?

Getting cards from the hand doesn’t help with card advantage and going to the library means shuffling so we don’t want too much of that. Obviously tokens is our main go to for this flavor but it seems wrong to shut off the graveyard just because it can be flavored a certain way.  In general, I don’t mind using reanimation flavor for getting cards from the graveyard but I don’t feel that’s the only flavor possible. If you make flavor too narrow it just cuts down your ability to make lots of other cool cards.

Origin of Reveillark

Reveillark is one of my favorite creatures. Do you happen to know who had the biggest hand in designing it?

Reveillark was one of my designs. I’ve been pushing for years to have more of white reanimating small creatures out of the grave. I feel it’s a good way to help with white’s army feel. (Note that I believe the flavor here is just more recruits not raising soldiers from the dead.) The biggest difference between this and the version I turned in was I got back creatures that *cost* 2 or less.
