Ral Zarek

Hope for Dack Fans

New 21 May 2024 Asked by polluxr 8 Comments

Really happy about the recently previewed flip walkers of MH3, but as much as I love Ral Zarek, I was really hoping to see a new Dack Fayden. Between that and having OTJ being "Crime/Heist set", not even seeing a reprint of him in bonus sheets makes me a bit sad. Is there still hope for Dack fans or should we just let him go?

There’s always hope. I do think we’ll see another Dack Fayden card one day.

Human-less Plane Concept

New 28 Feb 2024 Asked by leoninoftheignoredpride 69 Comments

I'm excited for bloomburrow but seeing Ral Zarek there admittedly has me a bit worried. To me it feels like it's putting a huge asterisk on the idea that this is the first plane in nearly 20 years to not have humans, which was a big point of excitement for me. You mentioned in the past that a human-less plane was a hard sell, so was having Ral (albeit as an otter somehow) on the plane some sort of compromise?

We needed a planeswalker, and there aren’t a lot of animal options. We also felt making animal versions would be fun.

No Ral Zarek

I am sad there is no Ral Zarek in MKM

The move to one planeswalker per set means we tend to focus on the one who plays a major role in the story.

Ravnica's Varied Tones

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by talos-4 49 Comments

Re: fedoras on weirdsMAKM looks conpletely on-brand for Ravnica to me. Ravnica has always had urban elements, and cards like Tin Street Dodger, Frilled Mystic or Ral Zarek all feel "dressed up" in a way that's still "high fantasy" without feeling out of place amongst MAKM art. "High fantasy," whatever that means, has the spaciousness to include detective agencies, and why couldn't they look vaguely like Vincint Price movies? Ravnica, a sprawling metropolis, surely has room for varied easthetics, including tall collared coats, fedoras, and shifty characters. Bottom line, the vibe and creative of MAKM are amazing so far, it's not out of place on Ravnica, no complaints. It's possible the neigh-sayers are picking up on the difference in tone. The last ravnican outings have been fairly serious or forboding, being either a planewide invasion of undead supersoldiers, or the unstable political situations leading up to that. In contrast, MAKM is pulpy, fun, and much less dire in scope. Murder is still dark, sure, but unraveling a mystery is very different from stopping a planeswalker genocide. For fans who identify strongly with 'Serious Ravnica,' this set could feel off-brand.

I do think Ravnica has enough breadth to hit multiple tones.

Ral Zarek's Status

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by j-waffles 25 Comments

Since the vast majority of planeswalkers were defending their home planes during the invasion invasion, and most of the desparked walkers were therefore on their home planes, is it safe to assume that since Ral Zarek isn’t on ravnica with Tomik, he’s probably still a planeswalker and is out there somewhere?

Ral is from Ravnica.

Ral Zarek Lore

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by apoxpengy 46 Comments

Hey, it was my birthday just the other day so I was wondering if I could get some Ral Zarek Lore please

Ral Zarek stated as a planeswalker character we made for a spell-centric deck in the Duels of Planeswalker video game, along with Nissa and Kiora. We later made all three into planeswalker cards.Happy Birthday!

Trivia about Ral Zarek

Last try to make use of my birthday trivia: Gimme something about my man, mister Ral Zarek!

Ra Zarek was designed originally so we could have a planeswalker for a spell-based deck in Duels of the Plsnezwalkers video game. He was popular enough that we made a planeswalker card for him in a premier set. Happy Birthday!

Requirement of Plane-Aligned Planeswalker

New 19 Jul 2020 Asked by lbolt187 34 Comments

How much of a requirement is it for a return set to include a Planeswalker intrinsically or historically tied to a plane? For example, I always associate Elspeth with Theros, Nissa with Zendikar, and Ral Zarek will Ravnica.

It’s not a requirement.

Yes.

Magic Character Trivia: LGBTQ+

New 02 Mar 2020 Asked by foofoocuddlypoop-loves-you-too 59 Comments

I think my ask may have gotten lost in the queue. My birthday was on February 27th and I would like to invoke birthday trivia if I could! Can I get trivia on a magic LGBTQ+ character?

Ral Zarek was originally created for Duels of the Planeswalkers, but players liked him enough, we put him into the game. Happy Belated Birthday!

Ral's Dragon Tattoo

New 08 May 2019 Asked by baron-von-lucas 271 Comments

Ral Zarek seems to have a dragon tattoo on his arm. Is it supposed to be of bolas? Niv? Or just a generic dragon?

I don’t know. I’ll have to ask.

Ral is not dead. The picture that many thought was Ral being de-sparked was not Ral.

Ral Zarek's Spark

New 18 Apr 2019 Asked by hajalak1-deactivated20200211 86 Comments

You said every spark is unique in some way. As a bit of trivia, can you tell us what the unique trait of Ral Zarek's spark? (He's kinda my favorite walker)

You’re misunderstanding what I’m saying. It’s not that each planeswalker has a unique ability that no one else has. Each planeswalker’s Spark is unique in how it works for them. There are many factors tied to pkaneswalking - how quick they can planeswalk, how often they can planeswalk, the physical wear on them to planeswalk, their ability to see where others have planeswalked, etc. Each planeswalker has a unique mix of all those variables.

Key Art Usage

New 15 Apr 2019 Asked by mrtitanic 64 Comments

Some constructive criticism (and a request). I feel like some of the best art in MTG is Key Art. Like Jace on the Shadows Over Innistrad poster, or Gideon in Battle For Zendikar Fat Packs, and recent Ral Zarek in Ravnica. Can we please start seeing Key Art used on cards? It is really frustrating as a Vorthos to see amazing art on everything but the cards.

The requirements of key art are different than the needs of cards art (for example, the dimensions), so the former does not necessarily work in the latter’s role.

Ral Zarek Trivia

New 18 Aug 2018 Asked by 80x8 50 Comments

Hey MaRo, I've been able to witness approximately 24 complete orbits around the sun as of midnight. The best bday present I received is the high probability of Ral Zarek's involvement in the upcoming Ravnica sets. Do you have any trivia on him or his card? He's my 2nd favorite planeswalker, but if I ran into him in dreams, I'd tell him he's number one.

Ral Zarek was originally designed as a planeswalker for Duels of the Planeswalkers for a deck that didn’t fit any of the current planeswalkers at the time. Ral went over well enough that we made him a planeswalker card in the game. Happy Birthday!

Diversifying Planeswalkers

New 24 Jun 2017 Asked by apok-the-combomancer 94 Comments

With all this talk of women/PoC vs non-human planeswalkers, why not drop male human PWs for a while to give more women/PoC AND non-human? We obviously have plenty of male human PWs.

The last time we made a planeswalker card of new human male character was Dack Fayden in original Conspiracy (2014) and on a non-supplemental set was Ral Zarek in Dragon’s Maze (2013). Both, by the way, were preexisting characters already in the lore.We *are* using our new character slots to expand our planeswalker roster diversity.

Gender Distribution in Red

New 24 Jun 2017 Asked by heraldofexius-deactivated202012 125 Comments

Getting more female plansewalkers is good, but is it possible that they could leave some room in red for more males? Bolas is the 1st male planeswalker in a non-supplemental set with red in his color since Sarkhan. Meanwhile, we have gotten Arlinn, Nahiri, and Saheeli, and Samut will be in the same set as Bolas. I realize that there are reasons for some of this (werewolf planeswalker, innovation theme, etc.), but lately red feels more heavily weighted towards female planeswalkers.

Hey Mark, it's my birthday today. Do you have any trivia on Ral Zarek? Also i wanted to say thanks for everything you do for the Magic community. :)

Real Zarek was originally created to be the face for a blue/red deck in an early Duels of the Planeswalkers because none of our then existing planeswalkers made sense for the deck.Happy Birthday!
