Raging River

Complexity's Role

New 30 Jan 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 29 Comments

Additional pieces and complexity have always been part of the game, in Alpha ,The Hive made tokens; Clockwork Beast, Cyclopean Tomb, Fungusaur, Gaea's Liege, Living Artifact, Rock Hydra and Scavaging Ghoul used counters of some kind. In the same set Aspect of Wolf, Fireball, Gaea's Liege and Personal Incarnation involve fractions with rounding up and down(many players still have some difficulty using these cards) and then just out right comp lexity, Camouflage, Illusionary Mask, Lich,Raging River and Word of Command. Not to mention Banding, Protection, interrupt batches, tapped artifacts turning off, tapped blockers dealing no damage, in addition to individual card interactions. This game has always been complex and drawn on other components outside of just the cards. All to the enrichment of its players. Do you think without the conceit of this complexity as many early board, minature, rpg, card game players would have been drawn to this azmazing game?

I think complexity is more feature than bug, but it’s still a dangerous force to be used carefully.

UN Mechanics in Commander

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by azureking13 46 Comments

Me and my friends love the occasional UN game. We even have a left over box of Unstable we are drafting this weekend. We look forward to drafting the new set. The problem for us is that while we do like the occasional UN game I do not want every game to be an UN game. Cards like Space Beleren and sticker cards make us nervous that every time I sit down for a game of commander at an LGS we might have to Deal with Un mechanics that would never exist in a normal game of magic.I know normal is relative but hopefully I have articulated my point well enough. You said stickers could exist but it never really felt like they should outside of an UN environment. They for sure would not exist in standard or modern. Now I am the jerk for wanting to opt out of UN commander games when the mechanics are more goofy than how I often want to play magic.

Stickers function a lot like counters, but I get how it’s pushing in a new direction. Why is Jace too “goofy”. He’s inspired by Raging River, and card that’s been in Magic from its start that’s playable in Commander. Theros Beyond Death almost had the stygian mechanic which would divide the battlefield in two and that’s a premier set.I’m honestly asking, because I don’t understand why you feel it’s so over the line.

Potential Card Updates

Great podcast about silver border / acorn, especially the point about casual play coming before the formalized rules. There are a lot of cards that are exceptionally complicated in errata in order to make them work (Shahrazad, Raging River, Camouflage), or have to be banned from vintage to stay in black border (conspiracies). Do you think its possible to errata those cards into silver border / acorn?

I believe Conspiracies would have been acorn if that technology existed at the time.

Battlefield Splitting Concept

New 29 Nov 2020 Asked by xandi20 53 Comments

Hey Mark, If there was a permanent or effect that split the battlefield in two in a way that creatures on each side ignored the ones on the other side, do you think it would lead to interesting plays or would it be something detrimental to the game?

Alpha has a card called Raging River that does exactly that and Theros Beyond Death had a mechanic in vision design that did a simikar effect (and one could argue Tempest’s shadow mechanic did as well). It’s fun, but has huge play design issues as it tends to snowball and help the person ahead, stay ahead.

O Wise and Powerful Un-Rules Manager: Can B.F.M. be on both sides of a Raging River?

No. It’s a single creature when on the battlefield.

Raging River on the storm scale?

It’s on the Reserved List so let’s say it doesn’t get a number.
