Phyrexian Mirrors

New 18 Apr 2023 Asked by vyslanec 30 Comments

Hi Mark! I had a conversation with a friend about reflections in magic, like black knight and white knight. And we ended up wondering, are the Phyrexian Obliterator and Phyrexian Vindicator the phyrexian equivalent?

They are (loose) mirrors.

Premier Set Reprints

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by tompixt 32 Comments

Hi Mark, I noticed how premier set have been getting high profile reprints at rare/mythic level such as Monastery Mentor, phyrexian Obliterator, Diabolical Intent, Liliana of the Veil etc., in addition to some interesting common/uncommon reprints. I would like to express that this form of reprinting cards is the most satisfying form I experience as it blends the elements of worldbuilding, nostalgia and card accessibility really well! Neither core sets nor master sets really did the trick for me. I hope this trend will continue?

Where it makes sense.

Can I be the first one to ask you "when will the Phyrexian Obliterator cycle be completed?"

"Black has a long history of bigger creatures for reduced mana costs that come with a significant drawback." - What's the drawback on Phyrexian Obliterator? The four black mana symbols?

I confused it with a different card.

Unhinged Damage Rules

New 08 Apr 2019 Asked by gelbooru-comments 38 Comments

If I used an unhinged card to deal half a point of damage to Phyrexian Obliterator (say, Little Girl), do I have to sacrifice half a permanent?

You don’t have to sacrifice a permanent unless all of it needs to be sacrificed.

Watermark Rule

Hi Mark! If I have a Stamp of Approval in play choosing Phyrexia watermark, does it pump Oculus from Mirrodin Besieged, Phyrexian Obliterator from Masters 25 and an animated Phyrexian Scriptures from Dominaria? Or are those considered different watermarks?

I rule all the same watermark.

If I have a BFM in play and a Phyrexian Obliterator takes damage, does the BFM count as one permanent or two?

BFM is one permanent while on the battlefield.

Sacrificing Specific Portions

New 24 Dec 2013 Asked by ascoat 14 Comments

If my Little Girl blocks a Phyrexian Obliterator, can I sacrifice one card of the BFM? How about half a split card, flip card, or Blacker Lotus?

No, no, no and no.

Phyrexian Obliterator Math

New 23 Dec 2013 Asked by scribonia 11 Comments

Un ruling: If Phyrexian Obliterator is blocked by Little Girl, are 0 or 1 permanents sacrificed?

I believe you technically sacrifice ½ a permanent and the game makes the other ½ go with it so basically 1.

Half Measurements

Little Girl vs. Phyrexian Obliterator question: If I sacrifice half land, can the remaining half land produce half mana?

Let’s say yes. That way if it’s half a plains, you could cast another Little Girl.

Little Girl Physics

Un-rules question: if I have a Little Girl deal damage to a Phyrexian Obliterator, how many permanents do I sacrifice?

Technically a ½ of a permanent. That’s the joy of Un-sets - sometimes you have to figure out how to do things.
