Vorthos Rule Discussion

That Vorthos rule also prevent Phyrexian Metamorph and Beseech the Queen being shoved into every commander deck, so i like it even from a Mel point of view

I don’t undersrand this argument. In every other format, you can play these cards in this situation. The reason most decks don’t is it’s a huge disadvantage not to be able to have the option to naturally cast the card. Why is casting a colorless spell for 4 okay but casting a spell that can be cast for 4, but also has a second cost, not okay?

Favorite Card Trivia

New 12 Oct 2015 Asked by atenciontumbl 43 Comments

Hey maro, it's my birthday and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on one or both of my favorite cards, puppeteer clique and phyrexian metamorph

We designed Puppeteer Clique by putting a cool black ETB (enter the battlefield) trigger on a creature with persist. This is an ability we in R&D call Shallow Grave after a card in Magic that did it. We have talked about possibly this ability also making sense in Red. Happy Birthday!

Designing Iconic Cards

Did you design Arcbound Ravager, Myr Battlesphere, or Phyrexian Metamorph? A Maro signature on one or more of them would really make my Commander deck happy.

Arcbound Ravager yes, the other two no.

Planeswalker Clone

New 28 Dec 2013 Asked by ciarannihill 14 Comments

Given the rules change that came with M14, what's the likelihood of us getting a Planeswalker clone? Maybe something like Phyrexian Metamorph that clones a creature or walker?

The idea of a planeswalker clone comes up from time to time.

Designer Tendencies

New 18 Aug 2012 Asked by tomblelog 1 Comments

Someone asked if you designed Phyrexian Metamorph and you responded with, "No. I’m not sure who did. My guess is Aaron Forsythe." Do the designers in R&D have certain tendencies in their designs? Could you, with some regularity, look at a card and tell who designed it without prior knowledge?

Designers do have tendencies so sometimes I can tell but not always. Usually I figure out who was working on the set in question and then apply what I know about them as a designer.

Card Name Translations

New 13 Aug 2012 Asked by micmacace-blog 19 Comments

You mentioned that card name words were the scarcest resource. Do you also take into consideration foreign words for translated cards? So who decides how cards get translated? For example, did you know the Japanese Phyrexian Metamorph translates to "Deformation of the Exoskeleton". Thragtusk in Japanese is "Slur Global Fangs", and in Chinese it's "Ox horn tooth beast" or it could be "Wing of an Army Dental Beast".

We’ve joked that the solution to endless names is to name cards, translate them, translate them back into English and use those names. Repeat forever.

Phyrexian Metamorph Query

Or Phyrexian Metamorph. Did you design that?

No. I’m not sure who did. My guess is Aaron Forsythe.

Comparative Terminology

New 24 Jul 2012 Asked by adamrinsky 21 Comments

Maro, a favor please on behalf of the Gatherer-commenting community. I'm tired of all these silly arguments about whether or not cards are "strictly better" than others. There are so many aspects of a card's interactions with other cards to consider that "strictly better" is such a heavily-disputed phrase (so congratulations on that, Mr. Designer). Can you give us a new, less-absolute term that will start less arguments? Please fill in the blank: "Phyrexian Metamorph is ________ than Clone."

“more Phyrexian”? : )

Clone Card Opinion

New 06 Apr 2012 Asked by markdash 7 Comments

Do you (R&D) regret the number of "Clones" currently available in standard? It seems like the presence of both Phantasmal Image and Phyrexian Metamorph are stifling for people trying to play with legendary creatures, as well as being perhaps too good with undying.

The pendulum of clones is at its high point. Are there too many? You’re asking a clone lover so, for me, no.
