Alternate MTG Universes

New 23 Feb 2024 Asked by monowhite-lifegain 58 Comments

I saw a comment talking about it, but you didn’t respond to it, so I’ll ask: If/when, sets based around alternate outcomes in the MTG universe, such as Bolas or Phyrexia winning, Mishra activating the sylex instead of Urza, etc.?

The problem with alternate worlds is it relies a lot of the knowledge of the past, something only the most enfranchised know. The Brothers’ War struggled and it’s the most famous story in Magic’s history

It entertained the person naming her. They both were inventors.

Rashmi Mishra Anagram

The name was purposefully an anagram, but I don’t believe it goes beyond that.

Odds of Old Cards

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by lordleovold 30 Comments

First time ever using my birthday question. What are the odds of getting some of the oldest cards printed on the List? For example, the winter Mishra's Factory, original art Mana Crypt, original art Force of Will and Mana Drain? Or basically any card from the first 4 expansions?

I’ll say the odds aren’t high. Happy Birthday.

Understanding Vertical Cycles

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by player4our 45 Comments

I've never heard of vertical cycles before. What would be an example so I can keep an eye out?

Urza and Mishra each have a vertical cycle in The Brothers’ War with three different versions each at its own rarity (uncommon, rare, mythic rare). Note most vertical cycles tend to be common/uncommon/rare or mythic rare.

Brothers War Novel Reference

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by wtf-oclock 40 Comments

To answer the question about liking the plot of brothers war I would have loved for it to be given more time on the war itself. There was a lot of story elements in the cards that related to the story of urza and Mishra but not a lot of chapters that touched on it.

You do know there’s an entire novel on the story? It’s by Jeff Grub.

Kaladesh Inventions Request

New 25 Jul 2023 Asked by taco-the-magic-dragon 41 Comments

Can I request a new set of Kaladesh Inventions?
I want Mishra's Bauble, Grinding Station, and Shadowspear as Inventions.

I don’t expect us to make any more Masterpieces, but booster fun could play in that space.

Character Versions in Sets

New 31 May 2023 Asked by ricardolongo 48 Comments

Some early constructive criticism: I like a set featuring many versions of a character when it's warranted (Urza and Mishra in Brothers' War, for example). But At some point you just dillute the character's specialness IMO. We have what, five or six Frodos and Gandalfs? And Bilbo's two versions cost 1UR and WBG, which might as well have been two entirely separate characters! Other than that, loving the set so far.

A handful of characters have three different versions in the main set, although most of the major characters have just two versions. One is usually at uncommon, designed for limited. The other is rare or mythic rare, aimed more at constructed formats. The reason they’re different colors is a) because they represent the characters at different points in the story, and b) we want different decks to have access to them. Magic has done this many times (with characters like Omnath or Niv-Mizzet), but usually stretched over time, because with our characters we have the luxury to do that.

Vertical Cycles Rarity

New 30 Mar 2023 Asked by melissanoma 39 Comments

The reprint of Phyrexian Gargantua reminded me about vertical cycles. Why don't you do them as often any more? e.g. Apocalypse had the "Phyrexian" cycle, the Bloodfires, Penumbras, and Whirlpools. Every set had a few around the early 2000s, but the only ones in the past year (afaik) are the "Urza and Mishra through the ages".

We still do them, but it’s become a space issue as there are a lot more things that need to be addressed in sets today than there was twenty plus years ago.

Alternate Timeline Set

New 27 Mar 2023 Asked by unigya 135 Comments

Has there ever been discussion of a set for alternate story timelines, like Planar Chaos but for the story instead of the mechanics? Like what if Gix had corrupted Urza instead of Mishra, what if Ugin didn't help imprison the Eldrazi and Sorin and Nahiri tried to kill them instead, what if the Blackblade actually was able to kill Bolas during War of the Spark, etc.?

It’s a frequent ask on Blogatog. What “what if” scenario would you most like to see on a card?

Multiple Character Versions

New 01 Mar 2023 Asked by jjustin1379 96 Comments

Are we going to see one legendary creature with multiple versions in a set like urza and mishra in dominaria united going forward? I like that because sometimes i want to pkay as a certain character but dont like the design so I like that I can pick between several different mechanical cards. Hiw about for lord of the rings? I want like 5 frodos and many gandalfs. This helps because sometimes people like the character but dislike the card.

A fine question. How many of the same character should appear in a set?

Mishra Redesign Insight

If you were forced back in time and had to redesign Mishras Warmachine what would you do differently?

I did redesign it in Urza’s Destiny. Seriously, I wanted to make a fixed Mishra’s War Machine to prove the concept of a creature with a discard upkeep was viable. Here you go:

All three of these products were home runs so please pass around kudos

Will do.

Defining a Cycle

New 08 Jan 2023 Asked by shallowerblue 24 Comments

There's a set of five common instants in BRO that each reference a legendary creature in its name: Loran's Escape, Urza's Rebuff, Ashnod's Intervention, Mishra's Onslaught, and Tawnos's Tinkering.

The question is whether this is enough to be considered a cycle. They don't have any mechanical similarities; only three target a creature, only two are modal, etc. Thanks for taking the time to answer!

It’s all boils down to how you want to define “cycle”. If you’re loose enough with you definition, it is.

Mishra Meld Pair

New 15 Dec 2022 Asked by szwanger 40 Comments

Thought you might be interested in hearing this: I head judged a 300+ player Limited tournament at Dreamhack Atlanta last month, and in the Top 8, one player's first pick was half of the Mishra meld pair, and his second pick was the other half. I don't remember if he ever got the chance to meld them, but he made it to the finals.

Cool!
