Mind Sculpt

Banning Aggressiveness

New 29 May 2023 Asked by zargasheth 55 Comments

Regarding your recent point that "if nothing ever gets banned, we aren't doing our job properly", I think I agree. However, players will often point to the decade from 2006 - 2016 in which only two cards (Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge Mystic) were banned in Standard for contrast. Do you feel that more cards should have been banned during that time, or that R&D wasn't pushing the envelope enough?

I think we weren’t aggressive enough in our banning.

Common Milling Cards

New 01 Dec 2022 Asked by delicateturtleangel 31 Comments

Hi Mark!Is it me or it has it been a while since we saw common milling cards in Premier sets? Not talking about cards that have the rider to mill, but rather cards that straight-up mill like Thought Scour or Mind Sculpt. Most milling cards these days seem to be aimed at control-milling, where I prefer a more aggro twist to my draft milling stategies.

It’s important that multiple drafters want the common cards, something that one-shot mill cards tend not to do in most limited environments, so we’ve moved away from them in common (save sets where they play into a larger theme).

Sticker Grammar Flexibility

New 12 Aug 2022 Asked by cryingovervideogames 29 Comments

Hi Maro, do you happen to know if the name stickers have to make sense grammatically? For example: can I add Urza's to the beginning of Jace the Mind Sculptor to make "Urza's Jace, the Mind Sculptor"? (Only could think of that example since it's used so much now)

They don’t have to make sense grammatically.

Planeswalkers Impact Standard

New 02 Nov 2019 Asked by khunjund-blog 45 Comments

So I was wrong about Oko being the face of the set, but that's the impression new planeswalkers give me. Regardless, my tone was rather scornful, and for that I would like to apologize. Let me ask a related question, then: is Standard perpetually going to be warped around planeswalkers from now on? Both of the Teferi planeswalkers as well as Oko are contenders for some of my most disliked cards ever printed, and I'm really apprehensive about the soming sets, especially core set 2021.

Play design is obviously going to pay extra attention to planeswalkers. They’re a tricky card type to balance, but there will be more eyes on them. As for Core 2021, just because one version of a character is problematic doesn’t mean all versions will be. Jace, the Mind Sculptor, for example was an issue play design-wise, but most Jaces have been fine.

White Planeswalker Abilities

New 31 Jul 2019 Asked by lazilycoralcheesecake 49 Comments

Hi Mark, I realized that red (Chandra, Torch of Defiance), blue (Jace, the Mind Sculptor), green and black (Garruk, Apex Predator) and the color combination blue, red and black (Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh) have access to a Planeswalker with 4 loyalty abilities. Will white join the party in the future?

Gideon has four abilities in War of the Spark - two static abilities and two loyalty abilities.

Collector Boosters Content

New 21 Jul 2019 Asked by kynelan-mdw 25 Comments

The new Collector Boosters for Throne of Eldraine will only feature cards from that set and not past borderless planeswalkers, such as Jace, The Mind Sculptor from the WAR Mythic Edition Boxes or extended art walkers, such as Liliana of the Veil from UMA box topper packs?

The only borderless planeswalkers will be of planeswalker cards from the set.

Thoughts on Magic Bracket

New 07 Sep 2018 Asked by crickethunter 34 Comments

Have you seen the top 8 of the Magic Bracket? Would love to hear your thoughts on the 8 cards that have survived the mother of all tournament brackets. (FYI, top 8 is: Lightning bolt vs Counterspell, Wrath of God vs Ancestral Recall, Birds of Paradise vs Dark Confidant and Jace, the Mind Sculptor vs Black Lotus)

The Top 8 are all classic Magic cards. I’m curious to see which one takes it all. I’m honored that I had a hand in two of them (Dark Confidant and Jace, Mind Sculptor).

Designing Jace TMS

New 07 Jun 2018 Asked by verbatiam 50 Comments

My girlfriend and I were wondering who was most responsible for designing Jace, the Mind Sculptor. She thinks you're probably responsible but I want to give you the benefit of the doubt

I was involved. My biggest contribution was getting him to have four loyalty abilities.

Unban Impact on Diversity

New 28 Mar 2018 Asked by aggroplayer-blog 63 Comments

I knew that unbanning Bloodbraid Elf and Jace, the Mind Sculptor wouldn't hurt Modern diversity; I however did not expect it to seemingly increase diversity as much as it has. Tell everyone they made a great decision with the choice!

Will do!

Mastermind's Acquisition Rule

New 05 Jan 2018 Asked by royalcrown5662 31 Comments

Does Mastermind's Acquisition work on cards that aren't legal in standard? For instance in a standard tournament could I use it to bring Jace, the mind sculptor into my hand?

In Standard, it gets the card from your Sideboard which can only be a Standard-legal card.

Planeswalker Combo Limits

New 16 Oct 2017 Asked by mewr11 45 Comments

FYI: I believe fairyking-nova was referring to an old combo involving In which Mycosynth Latice makes Jace, the Mind Sculptor (or any planeswalker, really) into an artifact, March of the machines makes it into a creature, and then Quicksilver Elemental can gain all of the planeswalker's loyalty abilities. This used to activate any abilities any number of times. Since Zendikar, loyalty abilities may only be activated once per permanent, regardless of whether that permanent is a planeswalker.

FYI

Planeswalkers Rarity in Reprints

New 02 Mar 2017 Asked by saro2103-blog 18 Comments

Can a Planeswalker be reprinted lower than Mythic in a masters set? Like masters doesn't have to be flavourful, so whilst obviously something crazy like Jace, the Mind Sculptor at common would be dumb, one of the less powerful walkers at rare probably wouldn't break limited. Not a complaint that it isn't happening, just curious as to whether it could?

It would be highly unlikely.

Oversized Cards Collection

New 15 Aug 2016 Asked by nezumibloodeyes 36 Comments

I notice you have oversized progenitus and vamp nighthawk on the wall, what other cards are there?

There are a whole bunch. We have Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Research & Development, Progenitus, a Japanese poison counter. I’m not in the Pit at the moment, so I can’t look around and see the rest. There’s probably about ten oversized cards in or near the Pit. A bunch more around the building.

Mono-colored Planeswalkers

New 24 Jul 2016 Asked by lgosvse 33 Comments

Do you think we'll ever see another mono-colored planeswalker with four loyalty abilities? Or did Jace the Mind Sculptor prove that this is too dangerous?

I think it’s still possible. Jace, the Mind Sculptor’s issues go beyond having four loyalty abilities. #WotCStaff

Jace's Popularity

New 03 Oct 2015 Asked by nextlevelscrub 42 Comments

How much of Jace's popularity do you think can be attributed to Jace, the Mind Sculptor?

He was the most popular planeswalker back in Lorwyn (and he didn’t have the strongest card), so some but not tons.

Jace Popularity Insight

New 01 Mar 2015 Asked by vincentalucard 178 Comments

It's not hate for Jace, is just getting boring seeing him everywhere.

Ajani and Garruk have the same number of cards. Chandra and Liliana have been in just as many stories. Garruk and Chandra have been in just as many core sets. While Jace, the Mind Sculptor is the most powerful planeswalker we’ve made, many other planeswalkers have been very influential in tournament play. The Jace hate goes beyond numbers. Is it because some people love hating things that are popular? Is it because Jace is the closest thing to a player analog? Is it a hatred of hoodies? I don’t know. What I do know is that Jace is the most iconic and popular planeswalker we have, so he’s not going anywhere.

Avoiding Broken Sets

New 18 Dec 2014 Asked by queen-firia 44 Comments

Do you feel like the Magic team as a whole is in a place where there'll be no more broken sets like Urza's Block, or no more outrageous singletons like Jace the Mind Sculptor?

I don’t think we’re going to have broken sets and the range of broken individual cards is much smaller than something like Jace, the Mind Sculptor, but developing Magic sets is hard and taking no risks is far riskier than never pushing the envelope.

Popular Planeswalker

New 16 Dec 2014 Asked by jpatrickavery 74 Comments

Which planeswalker character has been best received?

Jace. In all our polling, including before Jace, the Mind Sculptor was printed, Jace has handily won every market research poll we’ve done.

Telepathy Effects Representation

New 30 Nov 2014 Asked by moontang13 28 Comments

Telepathy has long been one of my favourite sci-fi/fantasy tropes. In MtG, I see effects like it in blue and black, with cards like mind rot, unhinge, mind sculpt, reap intellect, and future sight. If it isn't a colour-pie flavour violation, or even if it is, in a telepathy-heavy plane, how would it show in the other colours?

Telepathy is Magic is represented by seeing the opponent’s hand. Mental attacks can be shown through milling (memory loss), discard (brain damage) and Extract-like spells (lobotomy).

Jace Reprinting Scale

New 28 Aug 2014 Asked by mr-obliterator 53 Comments

You previously mentioned reprinting Jace, the Mind Sculptor is a 10 on the storm scale. Why was the power level of standard weakened soo much that cards like these are left to the way side?

Standard has never been at a power level where Jace, the Mind Sculptor was not over powered. (Well, maybe Standard with Urza’s Saga block.)
