Lightning Helix

Problematic Landcast

New 16 Oct 2021 Asked by tsukuyomihime 111 Comments

I play several card games that use the Duel Masters system and I cannot understand why you think you didn't succeed at improving lands. Almost all of my worst experiences in Magic have involved land. It's one thing for drama to involve top decking a lightning helix for game; it's quite another for it to involve just not being able to do stuff. While obviously Magic is stuck with lands regardless of what's better, is R&D really on board with frustration at being unable to play as a positive?

Obviously, different people can enjoy different things, but if you can always hit your N drop on your Nth turn every time in every game, I think it would make Magic a significantly worse game on numerous vectors. I get that not drawing mana when you need it can be frustrating, but always drawing it, is also problematic, and I believe in a way that takes a lot of the excitement out of the game.

Templating Lightning Helix Effects

Since the rules support it, what are the odds that you ever switch to templating Lightning Helix effects to "Deal 3 damage, lifelink"?

Low.

Lifelink on White Damage Spells

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by jimhensonreject 44 Comments

Can monowhite have Lifelink on its typical conditional damage spells, like Divine Arrow? Sort of like a situational monocolored lightning helix

The problem of putting lifelink on damage spells is they starting feeling like drain spells which is very black in flavor.

You just printed Klothys who is Red Green with a lightning helix effect against players :)

Fair point.

Potential Red-Green Helix

New 12 Jan 2020 Asked by birdofablackfeather 49 Comments

Since red can deal damage and green can gain life, can red-green get a lightning helix effect?

There’s a difference between what we could and we would do. We could do it.

Enjoying Feather's Gameplay

New 14 Jun 2019 Asked by thecurioustale 50 Comments

I've been playing with Feather for a few weeks now and she is seriously the most fun card I have ever played with in Magic. The durdles are amazing! She'll scry and draw, all while getting flickers and buffs. You can Lightning Helix her when nothing else is happening. Your opponent is over there playing FAIR MAGIC while you're casting Defiant Strikes and Samut's Sprints, and it's just a thing of beauty. Finally you hit her with Grapeshot, and she goes off like a gatling gun. Best card ever! =D

Happy you’re enjoying her card.

Color-shifted Set Difficulty

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by jrjetu-blog 52 Comments

Do you think a supplemental set could be made where every card already exists in some form, but they’re all color shifted to colors it also works in? Such as lightning helix in black, Serra angel in black green, etc. sort of planar chaos, but completely within the color pie.

That would be a very hard set to make. Exceedingly hard.

Multicolor Card Cycle

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by gynoidpoet 39 Comments

Would you be willing to put a card like a "(B/W)(B/R) Lightning Helix" on something like a supplemental set? It sounds like a cool idea, but it's also the kind of thing that seems to demand a cycle with some other "Tricolor/Monocolor" hybrids. Do you think there's enough design space in the idea to do it, at least as one-of thing?

Every cool multicolor card doesn’t have to be turned into a cycle.A cycle would be a tough design and not all of them would be at the Lightning Helic’s level.

Lightning Helix Analysis

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by corvus-abyssus 38 Comments

Lightning Helix doesn't feel BR. Black's life gain is usually tied to its damage, so if we treat the damage as the red side, the life gain feels out of place.

The point is monoblack and red/white can do it, so no matter than mana spent, you’re allowed to get the effect. If the effect had to be white/black, black/red, white/red and monoblack, I’m not sure you’d get a design.

Hybrid Lightning Helix

Could lightning helix be a hybrid {B/R}{B/W}?

I believe it could. : )

Lightning Helix Reprint?

Is there any chance of lightning helix being reprinted in standard?

Not a big chance.

Black/Red Lightning Helix?

New 02 Sep 2017 Asked by kjwxyz 41 Comments

I'm curious... Could a spell like Lightning Helix be black/red according to the color pie?

It could be monoblack or red/white but we probably wouldn’t make it black/red.

Lightning Helix Reprint?

What are the chances of lightning helix being reprinted on our next visit to Ravnica?

That’s mostly a development question.

Multicolor Mana Mechanics

New 23 Apr 2016 Asked by sirblackaxe 27 Comments

I think the questions about 1 mana multicolor cards are asking about Lightning Helix style cards with non-overlapping abilities from two colors.

You can’t do a multicolor card for one mana with no overlapping abilities from two colors.

Lightning Helix Inquiry

New 16 Nov 2015 Asked by arcaneinterrobang 29 Comments

I'm curious what you think about Lightning Helix and the color pie? It takes two effects normal to their colors (burn and life gain), puts them together (fine for a gold card) and then makes an effect that is usually seen in a different color (life drain, usually in black). Does this cause issues or confusion in the color pie?

No. Occasionally a monocolor effect can also be done in another two-color combination.

Black/Red Lightning Helix

New 29 Sep 2015 Asked by mrmond4y 20 Comments

Would a Black/Red Lightning Helix be a color pie bend/break? I feel like it falls into what they're allowed to do.

Black can do it and Red/White can do it. We wouldn’t do it in Black/Red without adding a Red thing and even then because of the high profile of Lightning Helix and Drain Life, I doubt we’d do it.

Red-Green Lightning Helix

Not really. The pieces are there but it doesn’t fit holistically.

Lightning Helix Trivia

New 13 Dec 2014 Asked by ally-encampment 47 Comments

Hey Maro! It's my birthday today. I was wondering if I could get some trivia on my favorite card, Lightning Helix. Thanks!

When we made it, a lot of people in R&D kept coming up to me to tell me that it was a “Drain for 3”, a black effect. I would say, “Yep, red/white can do it too.” Happy Birthday!

Shifting Effects

New 16 Aug 2014 Asked by infamousbobertjoe 28 Comments

But wait, Lightning Helix is a RW spell that does a Black ability. Could you not shift effects around in this way until your 4 color card does nearly anything?

Draining is a black ability and also a red/white ability. That happens sometimes.

Canada Day Card Pick

New 01 Jul 2014 Asked by tacocable 57 Comments

Hey mark, It's Canada's birthday today, could you let us Canucks know which card in Canada's colours (R/W) card is your favourite?

How about my favorite red/white card (for today)? I choose Lightning Helix. I love how red and white can combine to do something monoblack does. Happy Canada Day!
