Jokulhaups

Blue Card Mechanics

Isn't "Harbinger of the Seas" a card that completely deviates from the range allowed for blue? The effect of "Blood Moon" is essentially land destruction, and that should be allowed because it is red. Just because Spreading Seas is in blue, allowing it to have that effect on the big picture would be an anomaly that would allow Jokulhaups and Armageddon in blue. I'm not sure how the Council of Colors could have allowed such a card? If blue allows such a card, white and black should pass this effect before it, and if green allows it because it can, then green will be allowed to have a creature with both death touch and fighting. This card is too ridiculous.

Blue is primary in turning lands from one basic land type into another. It’s not an effect we do a lot, but when we do it, blue is the one who mostly does it. (We do let black turn lands into swamps.)

Red's Sweeping Exceptions

New 15 Dec 2015 Asked by memecucker 23 Comments

Red occasionally gets massive expensive sweepers. Older versions like Jokulhaups or Obliterate were basically "destroy everything except enchantments" whereas more recent ones like Worldfire and Bearer of the Heavens blow up all permanents including enchantments. Are those an exception to the "red cant touch enchantments" rule?

We toyed around with the idea that Red can destroy enchantments if it destroys everything but have long moved away from those types of cards.

Jokulhaups Destruction

New 28 Nov 2014 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 31 Comments

Would you prefer if Jokulhaups did 100 damage to each creature rather than destroy each creature?

Yes, I would. Note that we try not to have Red do giant sums of damage all that often as it acts very similar to “destroy target creature”. Red is supposed to have some issues with high toughness creatures.

Red's Enchantment Destruction Clarified

"Red gets to destroy enchantments every once in a blue moon when it destroys everything." Really? Because you've gone on record saying that's why Jokulhaups is such a perfect card, because it misses those.

I’m not saying mass kill red spells must kill enchantments. I’m saying every once in a rare while we let red destroy everything.

Game Term Pronunciations

Could you (or Wizards in general) publish a list of "official" pronunciations for game terms and names? Clearing up some confusion for us on this would be awesome! (I'm thinking things like Llanowar="LAN-oh-warr", Tabak="Tay-back", Jokulhaups="yoke-ull-haups", etc.)

I do believe we produce one for translation but I’m not sure we make it public. It’s an interesting idea. I enjoy how Tabak is an example of an official term. : )
