Card Types Ordering

New 07 Jul 2023 Asked by thunderweb 38 Comments

Are there rules on how card types and subtypes are ordered?- Dryad Arbor: "Land Creature" vs "Creature Land"- The Reality Chip: "Equipment Jellyfish" vs "Jellyfish Equipment"- The Royal Scions: "Will Rowan" vs "Rowan Will"

That’s an editing question, but I assume there are rules. I don’t know them. My guess is Rowan and Will’s order was based on the art.

Tarkir's Direction Change

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by myswimmingfurybouquetstuff 36 Comments

I can't believe we are finally going back to Tarkir! Though understandably most people are angry with the set being based around shard colored jellyfish factions instead of wedge colored dragon factions.
What led you to move Tarkir in that direction?

I’ve become a little obsessed with starfish ever since the last Suicide Squad movie.

Long Type Text Issue

New 06 Mar 2023 Asked by thunderweb 43 Comments

What happens if a card's type text is too long to fit in the type line? (longer than "Legendary Artifact Creature - Equipment Jellyfish", or even "Our Market Research Shows...")

There are ways to capture some of it in rules text, but there has to be a strong reason to exceed the card type line.

Handling Spoiler Questions

New 06 Jan 2023 Asked by squeezyboi 34 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm very thankful for blogatog and having a way to directly send you comments and questions. I have a quick question about how you answer questions: let's say in an upcoming set, there's something specific coming out ,e.g. a Jellyfish tribal commander. If I ask you "if or when: Jellyfish tribal commander?", how does that inform how you answer the question?

I answer as if I didn’t have the information of the upcoming set.

Request for Kraken Jellyfish

You know what I would love? A kraken jellyfish. Literally a kraken with cephalopod and jellyfish aspects because reasons

We’ll get kraken on that. : )

Request for More Jellyfish

New 27 Mar 2022 Asked by lantern-armory 41 Comments

I know it's greedy to ask for more since we got a legendary one in NEO, but may I request another Jellyfish sometime soon?

You may. Don’t be ashamed to want things. : )

Typography vs Character Count

New 18 Feb 2022 Asked by tybonel13 54 Comments

You said you can't do a typeline like The Reality Chip's again, but at the time why was Legendary Artifact Creature - Equipment Jellyfish fine but not Legendary Enchantment Creature - Shrine Spirit? The Shrines would've even came out to three letters shorter.

Typography is about width of letters not individual number. You get a lot of l’s for one m.

Issues with Jellyfish Card Artifacts

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by cntrstrk14 46 Comments

Can you elaborate on the problems you had with "Legendary Artifact Creature — Equipment Jellyfish" that will prevent it in the future? That sounds interesting!

There’s a whole bunch of issues. I’ll point out one. We normally keep a limit to font size because when we translate into certain other languages (German being the biggest issue, I believe) the text can get longer.

Type Line Abbreviation Proposals

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by christhestampede 69 Comments

I suspect the answer will be that it'd cause too much confusion with newer players, but what about abbreviating a type line? "Lgd. Art. Creat. - Equipment Jellyfish"Or maybe it's just too aesthetically off? Regardless, thanks for all you do!

I’ve been pushing using “Leg.” for Legendary, but haven’t been successful yet.

Rules Broken on Jellyfish Card

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by zackdes44 40 Comments

"Legendary Artifact Creature — Equipment Jellyfish". What rules were broken, and why can't they be done again?

We have font size limits.

Unique Card Type Line

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by yourstarshipisgay-deactivated20 77 Comments

NEO isn't my cup of tea, and as a Limited player, I'm sitting this season out. But that's okay; there's still something to love..."Legendary Artifact Creature — Equipment Jellyfish"...the most unique type line ever printed to date is in this set, and it's awesome. I can't wait to see how you guys top it in the future!

We had to break some rules to print that card type line, and learned we can’t break them again, so don’t expect anything quite that long in the future.

Non-critical Jellyfish Discussion

New 30 Jan 2022 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 35 Comments

Jellyfish aren't really a biological group (moon jellies, sea combs, tunicates and swimming snails all are sometimes called 'jellyfish') so I don't think anyone really cares that much about the term. There has been more movement toward using 'sea stars' instead of 'starfish' -- but I wouldn't really worry about it!

Jellyfish Term Changes

Had the been any discussion on changing "Jellyfish" to "Jelly" to reflect the scientific consensus? Plus, it saves four characters!

Are Jellyfish not called Jellyfish any more?

Appreciating Kamigawa's Design

Kamigawa is absolutely stunning and extraordinary. I especially love the Sagas, Enchantment Creatures and Equipment Jellyfish :D

Glad to hear that.

The Reality Chip's Creature Type

New 27 Jan 2022 Asked by llanowarminotaur 32 Comments

Was there any discussion during design of making The Reality Chip a Licid rather than a Jellyfish?

While reconfigure is similar in many ways to Licids, it’s not exactly the same and that might cause confusion. Also, creatively, Licids have only appeared on Rath (now Dominaria).

Man-o-War Classification

New 08 Sep 2018 Asked by secondmoonrise-blog 61 Comments

On the subject of erroneous creature types: Man-o-war is not a Jellyfish or even remotely related to them. They are siphonophores which are colonial organisms like how a coral is not one organism, but many small connected animals

It’s zoology day. : )

Jellyfish and Magic

New 30 Nov 2014 Asked by csick3108-deactivated20201213 61 Comments

If I teach an immortal jellyfish to play Magic and it casts Granny's payback, do we count its age as the number of years it's been alive or the number of years since it last reverted to the polyp stage?

Write back once the Granny’s Payback has resolved. Jellyfish are very patient.

Starfish Opinion Change

New 10 Apr 2014 Asked by tehpoker 155 Comments

You are acting all pro-Starfish all of a sudden, but when I asked you for some more Starfish in Magic back in 2011 you responded with, and I quote, "Starfish can suck it." (I can't link to the question here, but googling that phrase will get you there.)

Called out! Here’s the original post with my answer: tehpoker asked: Firstly, let me say how refreshing it is to finally see a block that DOESN’T feature elves and goblins for the umpteenth time. As for my actual question, before inquiring what creature types Magic should have that doesn’t yet (btw, Walrus and Platypus, wholeheartedly), shouldn’t some spotlight be given to the “forgotten” creature types Magic DOES have? Jellyfish, Goat, Pegasus, Turtle, Scorpion, Harpy, Hippo, Whale, Satyr, Starfish, all of these and more are cool types that deserve some love. I am very pro-goat, pro-hippo and pro-turtle. I believe pegasus, scorpions, harpies and satyrs each make perfect sense in the right block.  I acknowledge that jellyfsh have a popular following for purely nostalgic reasons (Man O’ War). Starfish can suck it. :) You got me. I’m a starfish bandwagoner, only hopping on once they got a ground swell of support.  Please don’t think less of me.

Oh, I didn’t know your friend said something. I’ll get right on it.

Creature Type Accuracy

New 02 Feb 2013 Asked by spartacusreturned 17 Comments

Please high-five Creative for classifying Clinging Anemones as a Jellyfish and Lichentrope as a Plant Fungus. I know that these scientifically-correct subtleties in Magic aren't super important, but it makes me smile whenever I see them.

The people that make the call on creature types do spend the time on details like that. I’ll let them know.
