Iconic Masters

Future Hascon Events

New 05 Jan 2024 Asked by mysterio797 41 Comments

Hey Maro, I attended the first Hascon event in 2017. Stan Lee was signing autographs, there were MtG arena play testing (before it was released), chaos MtG drafts, Iconic Masters sealed (also before it was released), and FloRida performed, it was awesome. ..what are chances that Hasbro does another Hascon event?

I think chances are currently low. I too really enjoyed HasCon.

Possibility of Spoiler-Free Releases

New 01 Mar 2022 Asked by lizardwizard100 48 Comments

If or when:A set release with no prior spoilers(It would make prerelease 110% more exciting!!!)

It’s near impossible with a new set. We’ve managed to do it with reprint sets (such as Iconic Masters at HASCON).

No Spoiler Season Possibility

New 12 Aug 2019 Asked by bitwisenot 35 Comments

"yorgi-north asked: Could we get a set with no spoiler season?" Iconic Masters pretty much was this. At least in terms of the events at HASCON.

A preview event at one location is much easier to pull off.

Product Naming Issues

New 02 Jun 2019 Asked by dornith2 90 Comments

It seems lately WotC has had issues with how they brand their supplemental products. Both Modern Horizons and Iconic Masters had names which lead people to think they were something they were never meant to be. Plus the "Lands Matter" Commander deck disappointed a lot of people. Does Wizards internally consider this a problem? Are there any plans to prevent future miscommunications like this?

Okay, let’s try something. You all now know what Modern Horizons is. What is a name that is no longer than two words that better conveys what the set is?

Modern Horizons Audience

New 20 Apr 2019 Asked by secondmoonrise-blog 45 Comments

'Don’t let the word “Modern” in the name throw you. The set was designed for all the different enfranchised fans of Magic including Commander players." So the set was named by the same person who did Iconic masters?

One of the set’s main elements is that the cards go directly to Modern, so the name does hit upon that. I’m just saying the audience for the product is much larger than just Modern players.

Iconic Masters Scope

New 20 Aug 2018 Asked by heleor 28 Comments

Were Iconic Masters and M25 not in scope for state of design?

No, I only covered booster products with new designs. I have almost no overlap with all-reprint sets.

Iconic Concept Use

New 14 Jun 2018 Asked by gophilipbowles 39 Comments

Have you considered changing Wizards' internal use of the word 'iconic', if not simply dropping the concept? As Iconic Masters showed, only highly enfranchised players understand Wizards' internal jargon and I doubt enough people pay enough attention to set-to-set patterns to recognise that each colour has a certain creature type regularly appear in the rare slot. That leaves me wondering what use the concept has, and whether it's worth the continued and non-intuitive use of the word 'Iconic'.

Other than the name Iconic Masters (which I believe was a mistake), “iconic” is R&D slang for people that like behind the scenes info. There’s always going to be word confusion on Blogatog as readers unfamiliar with vocabulary misunderstand things, but I’m pretty sure the majority of readers want to hear the behind the scenes info which requires some knowledge of the lingo. As for the concept behind having iconic creatures for each color, that has served us well for twenty-five years, So I don’t see that changing. (Obviously choices for iconics could shift over time as they have in the past.)

Mana Drain Reprint

New 15 Mar 2018 Asked by generalgrant02-blog 40 Comments

Since you reprinted mana drain in iconic masters was all of RnD hit by a bus?

The implied intent was in a Standard-legal set. At the time, everything we printed was Standard-legal.

Common Legendary Creatures

New 03 Mar 2018 Asked by blahblurgg-deactivated20180814 33 Comments

What are the odds of seeing Legendary creatures and cards at common or uncommon levels? Like we did in older sets and Kamigawa. I know if it's legendary it is supposedly a "good" card and deserves a higher rarity, but seeing some legends from Iconic Masters and the like being shifted down to uncommon had me thinking about it.

The only reason we did it in Kamigawa was because the set had a Legendary theme.

Doubling Season Reprint

New 02 Mar 2018 Asked by windwolf777-blog 66 Comments

So, Doubling Season has not been reprinted since Modern Masters, and is currently very expensive. Eternal Masters would've been perfect for it, but that went by without print. Iconic masters as well. It would've worked very will with the Hydra "subtheme" in Green, but to no avail. Why, (if it's not reprinted in it), are you guys ignoring this expensive card? (I know you can't do it in standard but still. Not to downgrade the AMAZING reprints you guy have been doing so far though.)

Doubling Season is much beloved. Another reprint is a when not an if.

Legendary Uncommons Future

New 01 Mar 2018 Asked by allaroundawesme 43 Comments

The printing of legendary creatures at uncommon, such as Jalira in Masters 25 and Rosheen Meanderer in Iconic Masters, is something we haven’t seen since the Champions of Kamigawa set. Is this something we may see more of in the future Masters sets, and is there the potential to see these in a Standard set sometime soon?

I wouldn’t expect legendary uncommons unless they’re thematically tied to the set in some organic way.

Doubling Season Reprint

New 25 Feb 2018 Asked by mageblade02 40 Comments

I’ve been curious. Why wasn’t Doubling Season reprinted in Iconic Masters. It felt like the perfect fit since no planeswalkers were in that set

There are a lot of Masters products and we have to be careful what goes where.

Planeswalker Masters Set

New 31 Dec 2017 Asked by themartiangeek 37 Comments

Would you ever do a "Planeswalker Masters" set, with a lot of cards that are either planeswalkers or cards that have to do with them? Like how Iconic Masters focused on the iconic creature types (or was supposed to, anyway) and things that interact with them.

There would be a number of things to solve first. Having things matter that only show up on a few mythic rares does not a strong theme make.

Feedback Welcome

Is Blogatog a good place for us to send in our criticisms of recent sets (Ixalan, Iconic Masters, etc)?

Sure. All feedback, if done politely, is welcome.

Future of Masters Sets

Given what you learned from Iconic Masters, does it mean you will scrap the planned "Characteristic Masters"?

: )

Iconic Masters Name

New 02 Nov 2017 Asked by dawritowins 88 Comments

Is lightning bolt Iconic? That is a dumb question. The answer is Yes, clearly. The real question is why does WotC not think so? (Because it is not in Iconic Masters)

Okay, I’ve been convinced. Iconic Masters was the wrong name for the product.

Elves in Iconic Masters

New 01 Oct 2017 Asked by andyhall23 65 Comments

Um...Mr. Rosewater, I know the set's being called Iconic Masters ,and I was just wondering, Elves are Green's 'Iconic' Tribe and they are NOT represented in the set , where as Red's 2 Iconic tribes, Goblins and Dragons , are? What's up with that? #ConcernedElfMage

Elves are green’s characteristic race. Hydra are green’s iconic race.

Iconic Masters Name Reflection

New 24 Sep 2017 Asked by bloodstonegoth 46 Comments

So, looking back, do you feel you should have named Iconic Masters something akin to "Tribal Masters"?

The clear lesson was “Iconic” was the wrong word.

Anniversary Masters Planning

New 19 Sep 2017 Asked by bloodstonegoth 31 Comments

I remember something along the lines of "Iconic masters isn't meant to represent the 25 years of Magic, but we liked the idea so much we're making 25th Anniversary Masters set". Does that mean the set was conceived faster than usually?

No. We’d been planning on a big 25th birthday celebration for a while.

More Hydras Promised

New 17 Sep 2017 Asked by themartiangeek 34 Comments

Can we get more hydras in sets? It seems like there haven't been all that many lately, only one per block (and none in Ixalan so far), and even Iconic Masters hardly had any of them.

More Hydras are coming. : )
