Greater Good

White’s Sacrificial Aspect

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by thunderweb 56 Comments

Does sacrifice belong to White's color pie? "Sacrificing others for the greater good" feels like what White villains would do, but I'm not sure if it can be done in actual game.

One if the dividing lines between white and black is white sacrifices itself to help others and black sacrifices others to help itself.

Analyzing Buffy's Colors

New 04 Mar 2023 Asked by reginakasteen 50 Comments

Leaving aside that Buffy knows people with magic and her "grounded-ness" is questionable, how is she green? Half her motivation is to protect her family and loved ones, and the other half is to do what's right regardless of the situation - it's hard to think of someone more clearly in tune with white.

The Watchers Council is white. It’s the one motivated by the greater good and with strict rules to ensure that vampires are properly dealt with. Buffy has huge issues with the Watchers Council because she doesn’t like their rules (or having to follow rules general). If you want to attribute her loyalty to her friends, that plays out in a much more red way. And “doing what’s right” was never her core motivation.

White Toxic Justification

New 04 Feb 2023 Asked by shortterm-emory 80 Comments

You may have answered this before, but if you haven't, what was the color pie justification for white getting Toxic? I can understand that it's good on small creatures, but poison counters don't exactly seem like something white is cool with, philosophically speaking.

Elesh Norn believes the world (heck, the multiverse) would truly be better off if every living creature was compleated. White is about a belief of the greater good, even if you don’t agree with what they feel that is.

Colorshifted Greater Good

If/When a colorshifter version of Greater good in black. It seems to fit very well!

If, but possible.

Phyrexian Personality

New 05 Oct 2022 Asked by jjustin1379 77 Comments

Why do the phyrexian planeswalkers not change colors? Dont their personalities change? Ajani would never act like that

Compleation makes you more receptive to the Phyrexian way of thinking, but it doesn’t change your core sense. Ajani is acting in what he thinks is for the greater good of Phyrexia.

White's Card Draw

New 31 Aug 2022 Asked by jackpotpie 30 Comments

Have Wizards tested sacrifice related card draw in monowhite? White took some color pie space of drawing based on creature effects (etb) from Blue/Green which was an elegant solution because those effects seemed very white anyways. Has the team thought about doing similar with Black's near monopoly on creatures dying to draw cards. It seems very "for the greater good." Or are people satisfied enough with how much it has already improved in the last few years

Sacrificing other creatures for a benefit is very not white.

Mechanics versus Flavor for Treasures

New 27 Oct 2021 Asked by crowsncardinals 50 Comments

"White is the least influenced by things like money. In fact, white would see something like treasure as a negative influence that makes people act selfishly and against the greater good.". With (Fiat) money being the quintessential social construct (i.e. it's worth what society as a whole thinks it's worth), I think there's a strong case to be made that Treasure is thematically closer to White than Green by a long shot.

We can have philosophical debates, but flavor is seldom going to be the determiner of whether a color does something, because as I always say, flavor can rationalize anything. It comes down to mechanics. If green is more aligned with producing other colors of mana, green is going to be better at treasure than white.

Treasure Mechanic Theme in Colors

New 26 Oct 2021 Asked by cicakemlelo 75 Comments

Is it not as simple as: Treasures are green mechanically but not thematically, and vice versa, they're white thematically but not mechanically, and when forced to choose, R&D prefers to prioritize the mechanical integrity of the color pie? Tradeoffs exist! It's fine!

I would argue that Treasure is not thematic to white. White is the least influenced by things like money. In fact, white would see something like treasure as a negative influence that makes people act selfishly and against the greater good. So it doesn’t make sense mechanically or thematically.

Sarah's White Alignment

New 13 Dec 2020 Asked by kaptain-kota 25 Comments

Why white for Sarah? She seems to be all about ensuring freedom for all the clones by the end of the series, not about peace or the greater good. Can you explain the white?

She at times takes actions that are for the greater good for the clones over what is personally best for her. The good of the group doesn’t have to be everyone, it can be a subset, and for Sarah that is her “family” (which includes all the clones).

Color Pie's Sacrifice Characteristics

New 16 Aug 2020 Asked by kheadhoro 42 Comments

Hi, I would like to make use of my birthday question voucher! But rather than trivia, could I ask you about the color pie? Specifically: is the characteristic of sacrificing ones health to achieve ones goals in Blacks slice of the pie, as it is a form of "greatness at any cost" or is it really depending on the goal you want to reach? For example, would a scientist who drowns themselves in their work to the point of health problems be blue or black/blue or something else entirely? Thanks!

All colors can do that depending on the reason. A white character, for example, might sacrifice their health if their work is for the greater good.

Potential Third Color for Nissa

New 08 Jul 2020 Asked by jillescas87 62 Comments

Nissa's been revealed to be a Green PW, with access to Blue. If she had a third color, do you think it would be white (she cares about her race and seems to put focus on its greater good) or red (she has the temper I think)?

Or black. (Learn more about her early appearances.)

White's Utilitarian Moral Stance

New 02 May 2020 Asked by midwestmtgjudge 39 Comments

Little philosophical debate: White seems very much in-line with Jeremy Bentham’s utilitarianism - the action that provides the greatest good for the greatest number of people is the most moral/ethical action. If White believed that an assassination of a politician/leader would lead to the greater good, would White do it?

White’s willing to do all sorts of things if it truly believes it’s for the greater good.

White Self-Sacrifice

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by polnareffassist 30 Comments

Could White's aspect of self-sacrifice for the greater good theoretically involve self-discard, or self-mill, to get benefits?

Possibly self discard, no to self mill. White is purposefully not good at self mill.

Digital vs Tabletop Design

New 03 Nov 2019 Asked by khunjund-blog 56 Comments

I thought the templating on Assassin's Trophy, etc., was to restrict play patterns, but upon hearing that's it's for the sake of digital, I'm somewhat disappointed. I understand that one egregious misclick can sour an experience (it's happened), but I believe the paper game should come first. I have wanted to Assassin's Trophy my own permanents before, and I have lost by decking myself with Agent of Treachery; I would much rather be allowed more choice, even if that comes with a cost to digital.

Magic has to live in a world where both tabletop and digital have to coexist. Much like every Magic decision isn’t made solely with one format in mind, neither is it made with only one medium in mind. I understand that each player hopes we prioritize how they play, but it is thinking of the greater good of all Magic that guides our decisions.

Batman's Ethical Stance

New 28 Oct 2019 Asked by ferretstorm 72 Comments

Batman prioritizes his own pathological need to not kill over the greater good every time he locks the Joker in Arkham Asylum to inevitably escape again. (White is the color of having a screwed-up impractical code of “ethics” though so that fits.)

Having a “pathological need to not kill” is very white and not remotely black. : )

Batman's Complex Motives

New 28 Oct 2019 Asked by bloody-altima 45 Comments

I'd argue that Batman's desire to 'save' Gotham from crime comes way more from Black reasons. He doesn't want to do it to help people, although he'll sometimes pretend as such, he does it because of an obsessive complex born of his desire to avenge his parents. It lets him pretend to have power in a world gone mad. There is certainly some White to him, but to say he's non-black kinda misses a large part of the point of the character in modern times, that he's just as broken as his foes.

He dips into the dark side of white - he’s obsessive, he takes dramatic steps because it’s what he thinks is for the greater good, he assumes that the worst is going to happen and plans accordingly often violating the trust of others, but none of that comes from a place of putting his needs above that of the city/worldHe wants to keep offers from suffering they way he has suffered and yes, the job gives his life purpose, but seeing Batman as being driven by a desire to do what is best for himself at the cost of what is good for society is a very untraditional read of the character, and this from someone who’s read Batman for forty plus years.

Batman's Color Identity

New 28 Oct 2019 Asked by goku332 38 Comments

Batman is 100% Esper. His black comes form his selfish desire and NEED to create a Gotham without crime. To make justice or create something from his parent's death. He's willingly lied and manipulated people to his own ends and agenda. he's definitely Esper colors.

Ridding the city of crime is not a selfish desire. Also, when exactly is Batman acting against the greater good exactly? There are plenty of superheroes with some black, but Batman isn’t one. He can be obsessive at times, but not because he’s prioritizing his needs over that of Gotham.

Elesh Norn's Vision

New 09 Jun 2019 Asked by lootthekey 91 Comments

Perfect example of extreme, dark White: Elesh Norn. She sees flesh as a weakness upon the world and believes everyone should be strengthened and united as one through compleation. She believes the compleation of Mirrodin was for the greater good by uniting all under one purpose and identity.

Good example.

White's Dark Aspects

New 08 Jun 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 110 Comments

Here is a probably not a populare question as it sheds light on Whites "darker" side. While white looks through the lens of " the greater good" , but there is also an extremist side and fanaticism over moral, ethical and legal codes; Where the ends justify the means in the ridgid adherence to these codes i.e. Crusade. The question is if that is not part of Whites psychographic profile or just Red and Black propaganda?

White has a dark side. Note that those people still rationalize their action as being for the greater good.

Color Pie Identities

New 08 Jun 2019 Asked by hedronsifter 53 Comments

"Elements of white often find ways to justify violence in the name of the greater good." I feel your color pie-isms are becoming, for lack of a better term, black and white. White's Retributative nature has nothing to do with the greater good. I feel like the current color pie basically says that white can never get angry, red cant introspect, blue cant go on a rampage, green only cares about nature and black cant care about others.... why is this happening?

White can and does get angry, but even in its anger white believes that it is trying to work for the greater good, to make the world a better place. If White’s anger was just a personal vendetta without any higher moralistic backing, it would stop being white.
