Gravedigger

Gravedigger Character Continuity

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by hobblinharry-blog 6 Comments

My birthday is coming up! I wanted to ask about one of my favorite cards from back when I started in 6th edition. I was looking at the spoilers for MH3 and noticed that the card art for "Gravedig" - looked exactly the gravedigger from the all time classic card "Gravedigger" ! Is this intended to be the same character or just a coincidence?

It’s intended to be the same character.Happy Birthday!

Since you were designing for Tempest, maybe you know. Why is Gravedigger a Zombie?

I like Zombies and thought it would be good in a Zombie deck.

Can white get Gravedigger?

If it got a small/cheap creature, sure.

Gravedigger Common Rarity

Is not having Gravedigger at common because it can recur another of itself an NWO issue or just a Limited power level issue?

We keep self-recurring cards out of common. I’m not sure it’s technically New World Order (as that’s more about complexity), but it’s NWO-adjacent.

Rarity Shifts

Over the past couple years we have seen a few cards increased to uncommon like Doom Blade and Gravedigger. Why don't we ever see cards lowered in rarity?

Counterspell started as an uncommon. Tundra Wolves started as a rare. When things move up, other things have to move down.

Anarchist and Anarchy

It being new years and me and some other punk friends are celebrating, Can we get some triva on the the cards Anarchist and Anarchy?

Anarchist was part of what we call a “follow-up cycle” where we take a card we like and later make cards in the other four colors turning it into a cycle. The card that spawned Anarchist was Gravedigger which appeared in the set before it, Tempest. We chose sorcery for red because it was one if the two spell colors and we wanted blue’s version to be able to get back counter spells and this fave blue the ability to get back instants. Anarchy is before my time but as a color pie guru, I considered it one if the greatest color pie violations of all time.

Two-for-One Commons

You mentioned that "Development doesn't like two-for-ones at common." Since you printed Divination/Mind Rot in M14, I'm assuming you mean only attached to creatures? Does this mean that things like Gravedigger are more likely to show up as uncommons going forward?

Yes, I did mean built onto creatures. And yes, Gravedigger has become an uncommon thing.
