Goblin Trivia Birthday

New 01 Mar 2023 Asked by pikachugirltits 44 Comments

Hey Mark, yesterday was my birthday and I think my ask might have gotten lost in the shuffle, so could I try again for some trivia a out Goblins? Maybe something you haven't had a chance to share yet?

Alpha only has three Goblins. Richard pushed for variety, so there was less of any one creature type. Happy Birthday! EDIT: As people have pointed out in the notes, Goblin King was originally not creature type Goblin.

Trivia on Creature Types

New 30 Apr 2021 Asked by gramplot 46 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my birthday! Can I please have some trivia about creature types? Anything you find intresting.Thank you and have a great day!

When Magic first started creatures only had one creature type (and artifact creatures didn’t get any), but there were three exceptions. Birds of Paradise was Mana Birds, Goblin King was Goblin King and Lord of Atlantis was Lord of Atlantis. Will-O’-The-Wisp was Will-O’-The-Wisp, but it was hyphenated, so technically one word. Happy Birthday!

Understanding Basic Supertype

New 15 Feb 2021 Asked by hyrosen-blog 60 Comments

The basic supertype on land does indeed mean what people think it does: 100.2a ... A constructed deck may contain any number of basic land cards ...

You are confusing the tournament rules using a marker as a reference with that marker having inherent rules. Goblins don’t inherently get +1/+1 for having a Goblin King around. Goblin King grants that ability.

Noble Errata Discussion

New 05 Dec 2019 Asked by gridnack 58 Comments

Are Goblin King, Brimaz, Grunn, Marchesa, Darien, and Noble Hierarch not errata’d to Nobles?

I believe Noble is being used to refer to being of noble birth and not just being in the position of leadership.

Goblin Politics Humor

Hi Mark, How come the Feasting Troll King is a noble, but Goblin King is not (he was not updated)

I try not to mess with Goblin politics. : )I can ask Doug when I’m in the office next week, but I have no idea.

Squee's Character Development

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by 64m3-0v3r 45 Comments

Quite a bunch of time have passed since we saw Squee during the legacy wars, however his new card only shows how he have refined his inmortality. Can we hope to see him like a goblin King or something in those lines?

Squee is not really a leader.

Linear Mechanics Explained

New 10 May 2015 Asked by trifas 29 Comments

What is a linear mechanic?

A linear mechanic is one that encourages you to play with a specific set of cards. Goblin King, for instance, says play this with goblins. The opposite are modular cards which don’t encourage specific other cards to play it with.

Tribal Word Requirement

New 16 Dec 2014 Asked by vargenhk 16 Comments

Why does tribal force you to use the word "creature" on Goblin King-style cards? Llanowar Reborn has Graft and there's no text on that explaining what a +1/+1 counter does on a non-creature land...

Once there are non creature cards that are a goblin, for example, when we have a card that we intend to only be goblin creature cards, we now have to say because there are goblin cards that are not. Before we didn’t have to say because every single goblin card was a creature.

Goblin King Reprint

New 27 Apr 2013 Asked by sstocker 8 Comments

What are the chances of getting a Goblin King reprint? As an avid goblin player, I was very disappointed when we got Goblin Chieftain instead of Goblin King in M10.

Goblin King is old school in that it affects all goblins. As we’ve shifted away from that (“lords” now help just your creatures), I doubt we’re going to see Goblin King back any time soon.

WotC Lobby Statues

New 05 Apr 2013 Asked by avatarofbro 14 Comments

I know there's a Shivan Dragon in the WotC lobby, a Prodigal Sorcerer in a meeting room, and a Jace, the Mind Sculptor somewhere else. Are there any other Magic statues laying around?

The Jace the Minsculpter is a statue we have at events not in the building. Other Magic statues in the building: Dakkon Blackblade, Goblin Grenade, the Jester from Jester’s Cap, Goblin Rocksled, Goblin King, the woman from the original Spirit Link and the goblin from Goblin War Drums. So, lots of goblins and a few others.

Goblin King Logic

In a recent post, you said that goblin king boost all goblins on the field because goblins get riled up when they see the king. With that line of thinking, shouldn't he be legendary? I mean, I get that goblins are stupid, but are they do stupid that they don't realize there are 2+ kings in their midst?

He’s not the only goblin king. There’s lots of different goblin clans and many have their own king.

Creature Boosting Logic

New 24 Nov 2012 Asked by stanforditch-blog 14 Comments

Why did cards like Lord of Atlantis and Goblin King initially boost all the relevant creatures on the board? Surely a Lord should be played with the intention of only affecting your own creatures?

Flavor. All goblins get riled up when they see the King.

Mistform Ultimus Traits

New 23 Aug 2012 Asked by dkirzane 5 Comments

The flavor of Mistform Ultimus seems to be that it's whatever you're looking for - so Zombie Master, Lord of Atlantis, and Goblin King all see in it an ally. So, even though it's not reflected on the new Mistform Ultimus update, is this legendary illusion also a chicken (a la Chicken a la King) and a donkey (a la Assquatch)?

He is when you are playing with silver-bordered cards, but in black-bordered world, silver-border only creature types are not supported.
