Trivia for Grove of Burnwillows

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 2 Comments

Hello Mark! My birthday was on the 3rd, but it's been a busy few days so I'm just now cashing in my birthday trivia!Do you have any trivia on Grove of the Burnwillows? Or perhaps Future Sight as a whole?

Grove of the Burnwillows was part of my cycle of cycles dual land cycle, where each futureshifted dual land represented a whole cycle of dual lands. Grove of the Burnwillows was made as an anti-pain land (aka the Ice Age dual lands), where the cost was the opponent gaining a life instead of you losing one. Happy Belated Birthday!

FutureShifts Likelihood

What's your best guess, which Futureshift will be the last one standing?

I think there a number we’ll most likely never do.

Possibility of More Futureshifts

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by logan5124 11 Comments

I've been thinking about what I want my birthday question to be for a while (because I know it's trivia but come on), and I think I finally came up with something.If/When: MORE FUTURESHIFTS?...I guarantee this has already been asked but idc it's my birthday let me have this

We always look at Future Sight when making new sets, but it gets harder and harder to find appropriate spots. I don’t think we’re done yet.

Futureshifted Pre-Print in Development

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by bakabakadesign 6 Comments

Hi Mark. How many sets currently in development have a Futureshifted pre-print in their files? It's been the longest one saw print!

As time goes on, it gets harder and harder to do them as the easier ones have been done. We keep trying though.

Futureshifted Cards Usage

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by chaosascendant-blog 26 Comments

Hi Mark. How often do those in charge of making cards/mechanics for a set visit the unused cards left from future sight? And how many in the future frame are left unused or unusable due to, for example, being too wonky?

Most set leads will take a peek at the futureshifted cards. As time goes on, the pickings get slimmer and slimmer. Some are pretty wonky, or have an odd mix of creative and mechanics.

Cameo Mechanic Criteria

New 07 Dec 2023 Asked by doopboopdoop 28 Comments

Can a cameo mechanic be a future shifted mechanic that hadn't been used before?

A cameo, by definition, is reusing an existing mechanic. That doesn’t mean we couldn’t ever tease a future mechanic, but it wouldn’t be a called a “cameo”.

Futureshifted Cards Request

New 12 Nov 2023 Asked by moonfolklore 24 Comments

Hi Mark! I'd like to request more thematic futureshifted cards as special guests. With Play Boosters, this would still affect limited, but maybe at an ok frequency.

I’m not quite sure what you’re asking for.

Premier Sets & Teammates

New 20 Sep 2023 Asked by graymerchantsmonomyth 37 Comments

Why is it that premier sets occasionally reference teammates but not commander mechanics?

Only two premier sets have ever referred to teammates (Oath of the Gatewatch & Future Sight). The first was playing into the larger theme of the story of the Gatewatch teaming up and it was part of a mechanic, and the second was a single futureshifted card teasing what future Magic might do.

Enchantment Activation

New 11 Sep 2023 Asked by livbrazilian 19 Comments

if or when: seeing again a enchantment that has to tap to activate an effect

If. We were messing with things we don’t normally do in future shifted cards. Artifacts and enchantments are mechanically similar enough. I don’t see a reason to remove one of the few differences. I never say never though, so maybe the right design in the right world will have us reconsider.

Future Sight Insights

New 05 Sep 2023 Asked by player4our 19 Comments

Hey Mark. Not sure if this is something you can delve far into, but have you ever released anything talking about Future Sight mechanics? I'd love to hear your thoughts about mechanics that you think are solid, what challenges come with some of them and if any have no chance of seeing the light of day. This comes as a huge fan of fortification and I'm really hoping to see it as a fully realized mechanic someday.

I have articles on this:

Future Sight Frame Consideration

New 07 Jul 2023 Asked by werewolfcommanderplayer 31 Comments

Was the Future Sight futureshifted frame made tongue-in-cheek, or was there real consideration that the design could be the framing for magic cards in the distant future?

A lot of thought went into it, but there were never any plans to actually move to it.

Grinning Ignus Reprint

New 08 Mar 2023 Asked by hyralc 36 Comments

re those futureshifted grades: grinning ignus obviously did get reprinted despite it being "unlikely." What made Strixhaven "the right set" for that card?

Prismari (blue/red) had a “play giant spells” theme.

Un-cards Potential

New 22 Feb 2023 Asked by fzzr 29 Comments

You've said that designers regularly look at the futureshifted sheet for pre-prints they can print. How often do you (personally and collectively) look for Un-cards that could be given functional reprints (or at least substantially the same card functionality) that now work in normal rules?

That’s not nearly as fruitful a subset as you think.

Future Sight Design Challenge

New 09 Feb 2023 Asked by lrddphn 49 Comments

I love the idea of a Future Sight II (if only because I'm a steamflogger boss fan). Do you think you'd be able to rattle off a whole bonus sheet of "future shifted" designs without much trouble, or is predicting the future design space a major challenge?

I’m up to the challenge.

Future Sight Mechanic

New 07 Sep 2022 Asked by hashtag-team-no-war-criminals 47 Comments

If you would have to pick a mechanic from Future Sight that went unused since that had the most shot of returning unchanged, which one would it be?

I’ve got not just one article on that, but three:

Planeswalker Trivia Gift

New 22 Aug 2022 Asked by darklordvectre 30 Comments

My birthday was Friday but i forgot to ask my question: Can I get some trivia on my two favorite Planeswalkers: Xenagos and/or Garruk? thanks!

Garruk, although with a different name, was the first planeswalker ever designed - during Future Sight. (Planeswalkers were originally going to be introduced in Future Sight on the futureshifted sheet.)Happy Birthday!

Completing FutureShifted Dual Lands Cycle

New 08 Jun 2022 Asked by drspartan52 35 Comments

Hi Mark, can we get some insight on why Graven Cairns is the only one from the futureshifted dual lands that has gotten its cycle completed? Are the other 4 not good enough in terms of current gameplay or have they just not found their place to be made?

Those Future Sight dual land were us being pretty experimental. Not all of them are getting cycled.

Trivia on Wizardcycling

New 21 Apr 2022 Asked by rattlesnek 49 Comments

It's my birthday today, can I request trivia on wizardcycling? Why did wizards get the only non-land-type specific cycling variant?

When designing futureshifted cards in Future Sight, we did a lot of extrapolating, taking existing mechanics and showing how they could be tweaked in the future. Inspired by basic land cycling, I decided to try one that searched for a creature type rather than a basic land type. I chose Wizard because it was a blue card and Wizard is the most common blue creature type. The reason we haven’t done more creature type cycling is we’ve moved away from doing tutoring mechanics. But who knows, one day we could revisit it. Happy Birthday!

More Cards like Spellweaver volute

New 11 Apr 2022 Asked by j-waffles 34 Comments

Can we get more cards like Spellweaver volute that enchant things aside from permanents and players? Animate dead doesn’t count

Spellweaver Vollute is one of those futureshifted cards that kind of works, but really doesn’t want a lot pushing on that area of the rules.

Experimenting with Futureshifted Cards

New 12 Mar 2022 Asked by jericuboritox 33 Comments

Do you think you'll ever try another experiment like the "futureshifted" cards in Future Sight that are hypothetically going to be part of future sets?

I keep trying. Hopefully, one day.
