Firebreathing Mechanic as a Keyword

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by zombsidian 19 Comments

Could the Firebreathing mechanic (not the card) become a keyword?

Unlikely for numerous reasons (it’s activated, we don’t use it often, etc.)

Flavor Words Opinion

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by yuleooze 47 Comments

Long overdue feedback on flavor words in the text box: I'm a huge fan on 'show, dont tell' storytelling and world building so having the card literally tell me what its referencing feels hollow. If Shivan Dragon had the word firebreathing on it, it would feel less rewarding for the first time reader than it was for us. Thanks in advance.

We tend to lean into it more in Universes Beyond than Magic IP sets. The reason is there is language we want to reference to make fans of the property happy, and sometimes flavor words are the best place to do them. There are players on both sides of the issue, so it’s a balance.

Werewolf Mechanic Focus

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by watdattho 40 Comments

Do one-off werewolves even need a mechanical focus? Most creature types don't, or lost their original focus over time. Elves don't just tap for mana anymore (or even tap much in general like they used to. Big sea creatures care less about islands than they used to. Dragons rarely have firebreathing. I can't think of many creature types that have a singular mechanical focus, now I come to think of it?

Imagine Slivers that didn’t grant abilities to other Slivers. (The two artifacts aren’t actual Slivers and thus the lack that ability.)

Instant Speed Abilities

New 26 Apr 2023 Asked by jimharbor 31 Comments

Why are Monstrosity and Adapt useable at instant speed of Wotc doesn't like the added board complexity of instant speed creature activations at common (that don't tap)

We make common creature activations that don’t require a tap, things like the Rootwalla ability (one time power/toughness boosting) and firebreathing (+1/+0 until end of turn).

R&D's Secret Lair Mechanics

New 07 Oct 2021 Asked by hyrosen-blog 31 Comments

With R&D's Secret Lair, do Revised and earlier P/T modifiers (like Shivan Dragon's R: +1/+0) last forever? Or are the rules as they were incorporated into the card?

R&D Secret Lair makes cards play as originally designed, so firebreathing ends at the end of the turn as it did when Alpha came out.

Firebreathing Evolution

New 04 Jan 2020 Asked by berryjon-patternrecognition 57 Comments

Mark, I was wondering why Wizards moved away from classic Firebreathing being something baked into a creature. Now I see creatures that have a cost of 1R for +2/+0 or something like that, but the old R for +1/+0 seems to have fallen by the wayside. I know Shivan Dragon gets put into Welcome Decks, but that seems like an exception more than anything else.

The 1R: +2/+0 is a stronger version that allows two-color decks to play with the cards.

Toughness Boost Ability

New 07 Dec 2019 Asked by spykepine 31 Comments

Does "firebreathing but for toughness" exist and does it have a name?

White and green have done it, but the gameplay isn’t great. We never nicknamed it.

Power/Toughness Swap Issues

New 14 Jan 2019 Asked by phyrexianperspective 75 Comments

What about power and toughness switching for the U/R mechanic?

That’s not an ability we want to do a lot of. Testing has shown the majority of players don’t know how it works with layers. For example, you have a 2/3 with firebreathing (R: +1/+0 until end of turn). You swap it’s power and toughness (until end of turn) and then activate the fire breathing once. What is that stats of the creature? (Answer below.)

It’s a 3/3. How many of you got that correct?

Mentor Mechanic Targeting

New 20 Oct 2018 Asked by yespleasemissmegido 27 Comments

Relating to a Take Heart question from a while back: why does mentor target? It only seems to hurt potential interactions with cards like Take Heart or the firebreathing on Goblin Banneret, and confuse newer players, as it's not obvious at all why these interactions don't work.

Not targeting causes its own collection of confusing interactions.

Off-Color Abilities

New 28 Jan 2018 Asked by make-mrd-pure-again 32 Comments

Hello Mark! Do off-color activated abilities have to be in-color for the ability, or can they be in-color for the card. For example, could a Red Dragon with Blue Firebreathing exist? Or is that unintuitive?

Off-color abilities match the color pie of the color being used in the activation.

Keyword Cost Variability

New 14 Oct 2017 Asked by stitchedlife-deactivated2018020 13 Comments

Cost variations can be keyworded (see Scavenge and Cycling). You can have Firebreathing R, and Firebreathing 1R as long as you choose to format it that way.

No, we can’t. The result of cycling is always the same. Firebreathing is not. We often want to do higher mana cost for higher buff for mechanical reasons.

Firebreathing Keywording

New 14 Oct 2017 Asked by calintares 23 Comments

Having listened to the keywording podcast, I'm still not sure I understand why firebreathing (R:+1/+0 until end of turn) haven't been keyworded. could you say something about that?

Keywording requires exact wording. We vary our costs for firebreathing. Most common is R: +1/+0, but sometimes 1R or 2R and sometimes the boost is more than +1/+0.

Earth in the Multiverse

New 15 Jul 2017 Asked by fexworldwide 75 Comments

Is there any particular reason that Earth is decidedly NOT part of the multiverse? I always loved cards with real world flavor text (Firebreathing being the best), and the idea that Earth could be a part of the multiverse seems like a fun concept. Just not sure why there's a canon answer which limits the multiverse.

We don’t want a movie or TV show with people from Earth traveling to Magic’s worlds.

Hybrid Creature Mechanics

New 12 Jul 2017 Asked by starlightofpenguins 31 Comments

I think the question is is a combination of the Rootwalla limit - once per turn - with the Firebreathing limit - doesn't pump toughness - something that could be both red and green and thus go on a red-green hybrid creature?

Fair enough.

Hybrid Mechanic Query

New 11 Jul 2017 Asked by ancient-chaos 24 Comments

Could "Rootwalla Firebreathing" be done as red green hybrid?

I don’t know what that means, the two are different things. Rootwalla pumps power and toughness but only once per turn. Firebreathing pumps only power but can be activated multiple times.

Firebreathing Design Code

New 23 May 2017 Asked by quail-feather 31 Comments

Does Firebreathing that costs 1R have an alternate design code name?

No.

Red's Unique Strengths

New 24 Mar 2017 Asked by golaranjago-deactivated20180322 80 Comments

In what Red is really good about other than direct damage and Haste creatures? It seems to me every other color does something Red does, but more efficiently.

Effects that Red is the top color at: (off the top of my head)- First strike (primary along with white)- Panic effects (“target creature can’t block”)- Temporarily stealing - Land destruction - Firebreathing- Rummaging (“Discard and draw”)- Impulsive draw - having additional combat phases- temporary mana production

Firebreathing Keyword?

New 10 Dec 2016 Asked by xmrsmoothx-deactivated20230222 22 Comments

Hey Mark! Are there any plans to keyword firebreathing? (R: ~ gets +1/+0 until end of turn)

No.

Firebreathing Keyword Consideration

New 07 Oct 2015 Asked by bentheechidna 18 Comments

Have you ever considered keywording Firebreathing ({R}: This creature gains +1/+0) or similar abilities?

No, there isn’t much value in it.

Firebreathing Keyword Feasibility

New 06 Aug 2015 Asked by shalashaskaarkhangelsk 15 Comments

Will firebreathing ever be keyworded or is it not used frequently enough to need that?

It’s not the kind of thing that keywording helps.
