Monocolor Effects Combination

New 24 Dec 2021 Asked by ironchefravnica 58 Comments

The Entomb/Reanimate with Entwine thing got me thinking, why would the Entwine cost need to be green? I'd have thought it was ok as a mono black card. The catch with black being that the card you tutor for does go to the graveyard first, so the Reanimate half still gets blocked by static graveyard hate. Grafdigger's Cage/Rest In Peace/Leyline of the Void and so on.

We need to be careful doing two monocolor effects on the same card where the combination isn’t in color.

Old Border Challenges

New 29 Sep 2017 Asked by necrolevolentia-blog 22 Comments

Me and a few friends were discussing that we'd love to see an Eternal Masters art Entomb on an old border; something for future promos?

Old borders are hard to do with the new printing requirements (the info at the bottom of the cards).

Library to Graveyard Cards

New 18 May 2017 Asked by tresschim 33 Comments

If entomb isn't a bend or a break, would it be possible to see a new "library to graveyard" card, such as entomb or buried alive?

It’s in back’s pie, so it’s possible.

Odyssey Cards in SOI

New 20 Nov 2015 Asked by tarmogoat-deactivated20171111 18 Comments

Hi Mark! Would you say that old cards from Odyssey block (say Burst cycle, 1C 3 Life flashback cycle, Madness and cards that work with graveyards like Entomb) would be a good fit to bring back in SOI block? (Not all of them, or not necessarily the same cards of course, but I guess you know what I mean). I believe Flashback (well for startes it was in INN before) and Madness would be great fits for the return (esp if there are Titans in there)? Or would that be overpowered? Thanks!

You’ll have to wait and see. : )

Buried Alive Reprint

New 16 Aug 2013 Asked by tropicalscream 3 Comments

why wasn't Buried Alive reprinted in Innistrad block? It would of fit thematically/flavor-wise, it would work with the graveyard theme, and hell the art and flavor text work perfectly with the atmosphere of Innistrad; so you wouldn't even really to change how it looks! I can understand why Entomb wasn't reprinted, a bit too powerful, but why no Buried Alive?

Buried Alive was in for some of design. The issue boils down to how many good cards to we want to be reprints versus how many good cards do we want to be new cards.

Could you ask development if Entomb is too powerful for Standard?

I just asked and they said “Yes.”

Close. I was thinking Entomb as I only got one thing.

Designing Signal the Clans

New 12 Jan 2013 Asked by wheresalientis-blog 5 Comments

Is it safe to assume that Signal the Clans was designed by you, as Intuition II that works how it's supposed to work? I vaguely remember you not wanting Intuition to fetch 3 copies of a card, and you can't use Signal like Intuition/Entomb for graveyard shenanigans...

I believe you assume correctly. And yes, Intuition was supposed to get three different cards but I forgot to be specific in my write-up and by the time I explained the intent the team was in love with Intuition as it was in the file.

Grave Exchange Cost

New 04 Jun 2012 Asked by ancient-chaos 6 Comments

Grave Exchange seems ridiculously overcosted compared to something similar like Soul Manipulation. Was it changed to from reanimation Disentomb without changing the cost?

Over the years, R&D has been upping the cost of reanimation because if we make it too good, it causes problems with our expensive creatures.

Random Recursion Design

New 13 Sep 2011 Asked by cryptrat 0 Comments

I can't help but think that players generally expect graveyard recursion spells to behave in a completely controlled manner. (Disentomb effects have been around since the game's beginning.) Was there any discussion about alternatives to making recursion random such as making it appear at a less-than-normal rate or by making it more narrow? You've often mentioned that it's usually best to go with players' expectations and I can't help but think that there was an alternative somewhere...

There’s a different between intuitive and learned responses. Getting back a known card rather than a random card from a graveyard is a learned response. When I make changes (and remember that Magic is a game about change) I tend to be much more willing to overwrite learned responses to intuitive responses because people can learn to do things differently but it’s a lot harder to make things feel right differently. Having played with the random graveyard retrieval, I found it to be a fun change of pace. It also created more tension, which I feel works well in a horror set. Note that this isn’t a permanent change but something we’re doing for Innistrad.
