MKM Theme Feedback

New 15 Mar 2024 Asked by lorddegree 42 Comments

So I'd like to echo what a couple of others have said. I'm not a huge fan of MKM, but I do appreciate taking a chance on it. That said, I don't think it's a case that a murder mystery *can't* work, I think it's just that it's not good for a full set (I think something *way* more limited like the old Duel Deck: Jace vs. Vraska) would have been much better (or maybe something a bit more extensive, but you take my meaning)

I think the trope space is deep enough. It’s more is it a theme people enjoy?

Nonfoil Elspeth Reprint

New 14 Apr 2023 Asked by theoreticalmagician 32 Comments

I've asked a few times over the years here for a nonfoil reprint of Elspeth, Sun's Champion with the Tyler Jacobson art from the Elspeth vs. Kiora Duel Deck. I don't know if those requests had anything to do with it actually happening in the MOM commander decks, but regardless, thank you to whoever made that decision. High fives to whoever is responsible! I'm so excited. : )

I don’t know you weren’t directly responsible. : )

Retired Product Lines

New 19 Mar 2023 Asked by havensglow-reblogs 26 Comments

RE: From the VaultAre products like FtV and Duel Decks considered (semi-)permanently retired, or could we see them as rare one-offs, like we're seeing with the Planechase cards in MOC?

They’re retired, but are open as possibility if there is a strong compelling reason.

Popularity of Duel Decks

New 14 May 2022 Asked by blaze-1013 28 Comments

Any idea why Duel Decks stopped being popular? They lasted over a decade and were the first major supplemental product line Wizards put out so I'm curious what changed for them.

It was more a case of things around them getting more popular. We keep changing our output of products, and over time, a product can be less attractive to players than other products around it.

Reason Behind Duel Decks Discontinuation

New 14 May 2022 Asked by markovsbaron 38 Comments

As a huge fan of the duel decks from yesteryear, why were those products discontinued?

The same reason most things get discontinued - it didn’t sell well enough.

Unique Duel Decks Experiment

Hi Mark. Seeing as I live in GMT+13, I thought it was a good time to ask you a very serious question. If/When: Duel decks Phyrexians vs Gleemax vs Bananas?

When. We’re trying something new though. You’ll find all the cards for the Duel Decks in the Streets of New Capenna collector boosters.

Reason for Discontinuing Duel Decks

New 20 Dec 2021 Asked by weddedlobster 38 Comments

One of the first mtg items I purchased for myself was the Elspeth vs Tezzeret Duel Decks. Later I bought the Knights vs Dragons decks and kept those unaltered, teaching well over a dozen different people how to play magic with thoseThey were fantastic products and I personally used them to recruit new players into the hobby, what convinced wizards that there wasn’t enough interest in them?

Sales data. (And market research data.)

Duel Decks Revival

New 20 Dec 2021 Asked by ryandimiragent 39 Comments

I learned to play Magic using the Speed vs Cunning duel deck, and many players I know miss those products. If there was enough popular support amongst the player base, is there a chance duel decks could ever come back?

They were discontinued because not enough players were interested in them. If we had evidence that has changed, I assume we’d consider bringing them back. I’m not sure what has changed though to make that now true when it formerly wasn’t.

Return of Duel Decks

New 08 Dec 2021 Asked by grey-oppenheimer 20 Comments

Mark, as a fan of Duel decks, If or When: Duel Decks return, even as a one-off?

Usually when a product gets killed due to lack of player interest, it’s tricky to get the product back. It has happened, but it’s infrequent.

Demise of Duel Decks

New 10 Jul 2021 Asked by ahrimans-bitch 53 Comments

What ever happened to duel decks, I adored those things.

Usually when we stop making a product, the reasons boil down to one basic thing - it didn’t sell well. I personally liked Duel Decks and was sad to see them go.

Recommended Product for Couples

New 03 Jul 2021 Asked by pureferret 39 Comments

What product would you recommend for a "kitchen table couple"? Duel decks used to fill this niche, but are no longer being made.

My personal pick is the Unsanctioned box. It comes with five half decks to let you combine to make various decks. If Un-cards aren’t your thing, Jumpstart does something similar. Also, one on one with Commander decks can be lots of fun.

Decline of Constructed Decks

New 25 Sep 2020 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 49 Comments

Re: The asker asking for products made for constructed, not limited. It made me realize that there are few pre-made constructed decks outside of PW decks and Commander/brawl decks. We used to have Duel Decks, Planechase, etc, but now these seem to be very rare. Why is that?

Most of the time, the answer to “why did you stop selling Product X?” is “not enough players were buying Product X”.

Ghostfire Reprint

New 10 Aug 2020 Asked by scheric 22 Comments

Mark Ghostfire was reprinted in Duel Decks: Merfolk vs. Goblins. In your article today you said it hadn't been reprinted.

At the start of the first article in the series, I said I was talking about “pre-prints” in sets with new content as it could be “the first place it was printed”.

Ghostfire Reprint Counting

New 10 Aug 2020 Asked by monk4567 22 Comments

Hi Mark! Just a little FYI regarding your latest article on Future Sight designs, Ghostfire was already reprinted in Duel Decks: Merfolk vs Goblins, although I don't know if you were counting only premier sets. Have a great day!

I wasn’t counting all-reprints sets.

Deck Trading Memory

New 25 May 2020 Asked by reddurcs 29 Comments

Happy birthday Mark! My college roommate and I both wanted to try out a new game, so we picked up the Izzet vs Golgari Duel Decks and learned how to play. I called dibs on the deck with the cool dragon, but we soon discovered that we each preferred the other deck's playstyle, so we traded. Green has been my favorite color ever since.

I’ve been an advocate of small Magic cards forever, so a big thumbs up from me.

Pie-Infringing Usage

New 16 Jul 2019 Asked by windsweptheath 35 Comments

What's your opinion when a sub-team, like those working on a duel deck, for example, want to use a pie-infringing card (e.g. Guttural Response in Mind vs Might)? I imagine you're not happy, but how heated do the conversations get?

Here’s the line I’ve drawn - If it’s not adding a card to an environment that doesn’t already have it, I don’t worry about it.

Planeswalker Duel Outcomes

New 13 May 2019 Asked by shadowstar91 51 Comments

of the Planeswalker Duel decks that actually happened; Garruk vs Liliana (Lili won), Ajani vs Bolas (Ajani won), Jace vs Vraska (Jace won), Nissa vs Ob (Nissa won), Sorin vs Tibalt (Sorin won). the rest were between characters that have never fought. In fact, in the case of Elspeth vs Tezzeret, we don't even have any evidence that the two ever even MET.

Duel Decks Canonicity

New 13 May 2019 Asked by the-darklorous 36 Comments

Are there any canonical victories/defeats for the stories around the duel decks? Who won the fight between Sorin and Tibalt, for example?

Not all the duel decks actually happened as fights in the story, although some did.
