Trivia on Favorite Cards

New 19 May 2022 Asked by smtmtg 39 Comments

Hey, Mark! It's my birthday today, can I request a trivia in my favorite card, Derranged Hermit (and Chatterfang, Squirrel general if you feel like it)? Also can you give me hopes that we will see a reprint of Deep Forest Hermit with art by Kev Walker? Thanks!

I’d been trying to get more Squirrels in the game, but multiple times had a card I designed making Squirrels get turned into other animals when the card got concepted. But by a twist of fate, I ended up being the person doing the card concepting for Urza’s Legacy, so I was able to make sure it made Squirrels. Deranged Hermit would go on to be the card that got Aaron Forsythe into the US National team and ultimately a World Team Champion. Happy Birthday!

Deranged Hermit's Influence

New 26 May 2021 Asked by blaze-1013 69 Comments

I find it funny that Deranged Hermit went from being the reason squirrels were black listed from black border to the reason someone wanted to, and got, a bunch into black boarder.

Strange but true.

A hearty thank you from one very excited squirrel fan, keep 'em coming 🐿️

Will try my best.I do want to stress Aaron Forsythe is responsible for most of the squirrel goodness in MH2. My design of Deranged Hermit years ago has paid off. : )Go Aaron! - 🐿

Trivia on 'Squirrel Nest' Card

New 13 Mar 2020 Asked by peteyvonwho 45 Comments

Hi Mark, Happy Friday the 13th! I wish to invoke the sacred right of birthday trivia. Can you tell us anything about my favorite card Squirrel Nest? Thanks

After the popularity in tournaments of Deranged Hermit, the brand team expressed concern that Squirrels weren’t “bad ass” enough for Magic (it was a different time), so I promised we’d make our Squirrels more “bad ass” which is how we got the origibal art for Squirrel Nest. How are we not bad ass? - 🐿

Squirrels in Black Border

New 10 Mar 2020 Asked by lylethebloody 46 Comments

As you push squirrels more and more into the "un'-iverse of magic, I worry that you may typecast the creature type even more among your R&D counterparts as "not serious enough for black-border Magic." Squirrels have been in black border for a LONG time and I am hoping to see a Legendary Elf version of the Deranged Hermit to lead a Commander deck in the future. Are you worried that using them for comedic value compromises their chance to come back into black border or standard?

I’ve put them in silver border because otherwise there would be none new ones printed. I haven’t given up the fight to get them back in black border. I’m stubborn. I’ll get there eventually.

Squirrel Cards Expansion

New 02 Feb 2020 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 41 Comments

Re new Squirrel cards: Deep Forest Hermit is technically a new black border squirrel card, although it is a reprint in spirit (of Deranged Hermit).

We have seen a few Squirrels in black border in supplemental products. Which is a good start. I want to get them into Standard-legal product.

Squirrel Card Correction

New 05 Jul 2019 Asked by greensunzenith 41 Comments

A correction regarding your assertion that the first card with squirrels in the art was printed in Urza's Legacy (Deranged Hermit): Liege of the Hollows was printed in Weatherlight with a bunch of squirrels drawn by classic ol' Ron Spencer.

You are correct. I forgot Liege of Hollows. I was the one that argued to make them Squirrels. : )

Hi Mark, today is my Birthday. May I ask, what are your favorite squirrel cards in Magic?

Probably Deranged Hermit. I’m very proud of that design.

Squirrel Farm, although Earl of Squirrel and Deranged Hermit are close.

Un-sets Composition

New 14 May 2017 Asked by chetskolos 66 Comments

When I played with un-set cards the best games were with them mixed with black bordered cards. Comedian duals tend to have a funny man and a straight man. Adding a black bordered sheet to an un-set would be like having the straight man built into the set. This could be funny cards like barren glory or deranged hermit ; or black bordered cards that silver bordered cards can bounce off of. These can be reprints of existing cards or newly designed cards.

But we don’t get to do Un-sets very often. Why make part of it the straight man when the rest of Magic is the straight man?

Birthday Trivia Favorites

Hello, Maro. It was my birthday a couple of days ago and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on either (or both) my favourite cards: Deranged Hermit and Blinding Angel. Thanks for all you do on here and happy holidays.

Deranged Hermit was the key card that got my boss (Aaron Forsythe) onto the US National team which would then go on to win the team championships at Worlds. Happy Birthday!

Deranged Hermit Tribute

My birthday is Friday, and I was wondering if I could get any fun facts on one of my favorite squirrel creating cards, Deranged Hermit. Thanks so much! And have a good Memorial Day weekend, don't forget to thank a vet!

I made Deranged Hermit as a tribute to Squirrels. The card later helped Aaron Forsythe became a member of the U.S. National Team. Happy Birthday on Friday!

Squirrel Cards Future

New 29 Apr 2015 Asked by daemose 37 Comments

Hey Mark, aren't we overdue for another squirrel lord? Been a while since Deranged Hermit and Nut Collector.

The lack of the ability to print squirrel cards in normal sets is a bit of a barrier. If I see an opportunity, I’ll see what I can do.

Master of Waves Logic

New 01 Apr 2014 Asked by kerrjf 24 Comments

Why is Master of Waves a blue card? Making a large amount of creature tokens and being an anthem for those tokens seems very green and has been green historically on cards like Verdeloth the Ancient and Deranged Hermit.

It’s a top-down card of a wizard animating waves (aka making small water elementals). That top-down flavor is very blue. All five colors have some access to token making, Blue is fifth but it is allowed to do it.

Business Card Choices

New 26 Mar 2014 Asked by blekkja 10 Comments

When you start running out of Business Cards you should request Maro for the next printing. Or Deranged Hermit. Though the ones you have currently are all pretty cool. I think the Nissa ones work the best from a visual/placement sorta basis though.

I have no say in what the pictures are.

Squirrel Cards

New 10 Nov 2013 Asked by bluelotus0-blog 17 Comments

Have you tried getting squirrels printed by noting that many players, especially cube players, play cards such as Deranged Hermit that make squirrel tokens but don't have proper squirrel tokens to use? (The Unglued and player rewards tokens are difficult to find and costly for tokens.) All it would take is a single card that makes squirrels!

Making tournament viable squirrel cards is what got us in trouble in the first place.

Squirrels in Sets

New 11 May 2013 Asked by brendanistan 4 Comments

If squirrels are only in Odyssey, how did Deranged Hermit slip through in Urza's Legacy? Evil Maro on the development team?

For Odyssey, I was in charge of names, flavor text and creature types. For Urza’s Legacy, I was in charge of card concepting.
