Darksteel Relic

Darksteel Relic Trivia

New 23 May 2024 Asked by pascal314 15 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is my birthday. If it's not too specific, I was wondering if you had some trivia regarding my favorite Magic card, Darksteel Relic. Thanks!

The design of Darksteel Relic was actually a bit controversial. Shortly after I made indestructible, I designed this card. A lot of R&D was “Why print this? It doesn’t do anything.” I said that players would figure out things to do with it, and finally managed to keep it in the set.Happy Birthday!

Color Pie Fit

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by kallixti 43 Comments

Darksteel Relic is an artifact which does nothing. If you were to make an enchantment/instant/sorcery which similarly does nothing, where in the color pie would it be?

Green or white.

Stacking p/t Stickers

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by jubilant-brawler 20 Comments

Could I stack all my p/t stickers on a Darksteel Relic in order to keep them safe from removal in an Ambassador Blorpityblorpboop deck?

You could put one. The second one would replace the first.

Near-Zero Text Artifact Card

"a zero mana artifact card with no text" - Darksteel Relic is pretty close to this.

True.

Trivia on Darksteel Relic

Today is my birthday, might I get some trivia on my namesake card: Darksteel Relic

There was a lot of fighting over whether we should print Darksteel Relic. A bunch of R&D thought it was a bad joke.Happy Birthday!

Functionality of Cards

New 16 Sep 2018 Asked by wasteofzerosandones 58 Comments

"I'm not a fan of making cards that don't do anything." But what about Darksteel Relic? Or Null Rod?

Darksteel Relic is the closest to a do nothing card we’ve made. Null Rod stops other things from working, so it clearly has a function. Darksteel Relic’s design was a big debate at the time, but because of affinity for artifacts it at least did something within the environment.

Vanilla Cards Concept

New 15 Sep 2018 Asked by metakin6v 29 Comments

About vanilla noncreature card, a vanilla artifact or enchantment will be like Darksteel Relic without indestructible. A vanilla instant or sorcery will be a spell that just go to the graveyard with no effect after casting. Duel Masters have some vanilla sorceries.

What is the point of doing that other than saying you did it? I’m not a fan of making cards that don’t do anything.

Defining Vanilla Spells

New 02 Mar 2017 Asked by rhys-the-rememed 27 Comments

What are these people who want a "vanilla" noncreature spell thinking that would be? I'm having trouble coming up with anything that could be vanilla that isn't a creature

If you remove the creature restrictions, Darksteel Relic is French Vanilla. The only rules text it has is the keyword Indestructible.

Definitions of Vanilla Cards

New 01 Mar 2017 Asked by mrpopogod 39 Comments

"Vanillas are by definition creatures." Darksteel Relic is French Vanilla. And in a hypothetical world where you guys didn't learn your lesson from Affinity there could be a Vanilla enchantment to trigger Constellation and other enchantment matters effects.

Darksteel Relic is technically not a French Vanilla because…Vanillas/French Vanillas by definition are creatures. And I would know as I’m the one who created the slang. The reason the definition involves creatures is because of how it is used. If I said “the file needs an artifact French Vanilla, Darksteel Relic wouldn’t actually solve the problem at hand.

Noncreature Vanillas

New 09 Jun 2016 Asked by barracius 24 Comments

"jimthcb asked: What is designs stance on non creature vanillas? Enchanments, instants, sorceries, noncreature artifacts equupments and auras that dont have any effects? They tend to confuse players so we mostly don’t make them." I think the closest to that is Darksteel Relic (0 mana indestructible artifact and that's it)

Darksteel Released is why I said “mostly”.

Darksteel Relic Confusion

New 14 May 2016 Asked by huandamonia 21 Comments

"An enchantment that didn’t do anything? No, that would have caused lots of confusion." Did Darksteel Relic cause confusion? Legitimately asking.

It did. It at least though had some text on it.

Design Space in Artifacts

New 31 May 2015 Asked by like-winter-we-are-cruel 18 Comments

Well, look at Darksteel Relic. It's a french vanilla noncreature spell. Is there any design space left in similar things? Things that exist not to do things themselves, but to turn on other things?

There are few that we can make of those.

It's my birthday and I sent an ask in this morning, but just in case it got lost in the daily deluge; Any interesting trivia re; my favourite card in Magic, the Darksteel Relic? How did you guys arrive at a card that both costs and does nothing? Who wrote the flavour text?

I believe Darksteel Relic was a Ken Nagle special. We don’t do cards like this often but every once in a while they can be fun.I have no idea who wrote the flavor text.Happy Birthday!

Darksteel Relic Reception

New 09 Nov 2014 Asked by ccgnick 23 Comments

Speaking of things that do nothing, how did Darksteel relic fare with players?

It confused more than it delighted. A little of that is okay, but it needs to be in very small doses.

Equipment Uses

New 09 Nov 2014 Asked by the-hittite 13 Comments

Well, equipment that does nothing could have some uses. Cards like Goblin Gaveleer and Kemba, Kha Regent could use them. Basically, they'd fill the same spot for them that Darksteel Relic does for Affinity and Metalcraft.

Magic will always have use for things that are a card/permanent or a particular card type, but we need to be careful with cards that “do nothing” as they confuse players and generally have little value. As Darksteel Relic shows, we do make them, but very infrequently.

Darksteel Relic Feedback

How well did Darksteel Relic do in your fancy Godbook studies?

It’s a card that exists to make players go “What?” so poorly, of course.

Devotion Aid Card

New 03 Sep 2013 Asked by ili-92 12 Comments

Can you confirm or deny the possibility of a card that pretty much solely exists to aid devotion? (Similar to how Darksteel Relic enabled Metalcraft)

At the Theros PAX party, we showed off Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx which is a land meant for devotion decks

Zero Cost Mechanics

New 23 Oct 2012 Asked by sirjamez 7 Comments

I would think that "0" has been the biggest problem number for R&D to date...abilities, CMC, alternate cost - i think it's always caused problems/concerns except on Darksteel Relic (possibly the only safe example). But don't tread carefully! We like it every so often when things get to go bananas for a while.

Oh Ornithorpter - you haunt my dreams. : )

Amusing Cards Joy

New 02 Mar 2012 Asked by cryptrat 5 Comments

I find cards like One with Nothing, Norin the Wary, and Darksteel Relic really amusing to look at. It's like I'd want a giant post of them to hang on my wall to laugh at. What are these designs tapping into?

I’m guessing you are what we call an Uber-Johnny in that you take great pride in finding worth in cards other players find worthless. As a fellow Uber-Johnny (I once built a deck that killed with the card Tunnel), I salute you. Tunnel for those that might not know your Alpha cards read “Destroy target wall.”
