Commander Card Inclusion Concerns

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by beatsandskies 42 Comments

Hi Maro: I’m definitely disappointed that there won’t be normal Commanders in the Commander decks. If people want a foil or showcase version then isn’t that what the collector boosters are for? I recently picked up the last set of challenger decks for casual play and it’s annoying I need to order another Kappa Tech-Wrecker and normal VOW/MID basics to replace included cards. I absolutely love precons — note my profile pic — and it’d be sad if they became another thing which “isn’t for me”.

The challenge is some players want one thing and some want another and we can only do one thing. As for putting the Commanders in the collector booster, we’ve done extensive polling of the audience for the collector booster and they mostly don’t want the Commander cards in the product.

Rings in Lord of Rings

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 3 Comments

Why didnt you do all the rings in lord of the rings? Gandalf and galdriel both had rings but you only did the one ring. It's called lord of the rings plural so I wanted more rings. You only did the one ring. I wanted ring kindred

We did do all the rings. A number of them were Sol Ring variants in the Collector Boosters.

Special Draft Experience Feedback

New 29 May 2024 Asked by lebreadbox-blog 53 Comments

I played the 50th anniversary DnD battle for baldur's Gate special draft with the new dungeon. HOLY COW. Was this ever a fun draft. I LOVED the collector booster in your draft pool. I loved the new dungeon. And the set remains as fun as ever to draft and play. High fives, yes. But please, can we have more special drafts like this?

I can pass along how much you enjoyed it.

Un-List Possibility

New 15 May 2024 Asked by glamberrr 8 Comments

If you ever made another un set is there any chance you'd add a The List to it?

Unfinity basically had an Un-List, although it might have only been in the Collector Boosters.

Timeline of Warhammer 40k Decks

New 23 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 19 Comments

Were the Warhammer 40k decks made before the idea of UB Commander decks + Collector Boosters was established?I like the idea of upgrading these UB precons with UB reskins of cards, but I'm hesitant to do so because my W40k ones don't have that opportunity.

Yes, that was before we thought of doing that.

Issue with Reprinting Oko

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 61 Comments

I don't like the argument that because original Oko is at a higher rarity on a bonus sheet, it's impact in Limited is minimal so it's fine.

Not everyone plays on Magic Arena and does Limited events dozens of times. Some people only play Limited in paper a couple times or at a pre-release and it's extremely discouraging when the one or two times you play limited, you get bodied by a notoriously OP card that isn't even a mechanically new card.

Magic makes numerous different products, various products where they can reprint cards that aren't also used for Limited (i.e. collector boosters, FNM promos, Secret Lair, pre-constructed Commander decks) or even high powered reprint Masters sets that can be drafted.

I don't see why Oko needed to be in the Play Boosters and I thought the same about Ragavan in March of the Machine. If it's thematically important to release the reprint associated with the set, then why not just do it in collector boosters?

One thing I don't like about all of these bonus sheets is it means in nearly every limited environment with them, the best and most powerful cards are oftentimes old cards that I'd played with or against rather than the new cards I want to be excited for.

Let’s see what the Question Mark’s think about this specific topic.

Commander Precons Model

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by izzipurrito 34 Comments

I've noticed a trend with some sets, namely Doctor Who and Fallout, where the entire set of cards is contained in the Commander Precons and they are released alongside a collector booster for those who like foils.I want to say that, despite me not liking Commander one bit, I really like this model and would be in favor of this model being used for products that reprint cards, like Ultimate Masters and Double Masters.I would unironically buy precons like this if it was designed this way. Give a high five to whoever thought of this, because they did a good job.

Will do.

Rare Lands in Commander

New 05 Mar 2024 Asked by lolling-stones-blog 54 Comments

Hi Mark,
Is it possible to reduce the variety of rare lands that come out of Commanders of the same set?
I bought the Doctor Who Collector Booster Box that is full of them and this inhibits me from buying the Fallout collector booster box, because I would find the same lands (too many) of the Doctor Who edition with different art, instead of the new cards created ad hoc.
50 rare lands are an obstacle that will stop me from buying the next UB collectors too. Is there a way to drastically reduce this number? Thanks

Land design is one of the most restricted veins. In addition, there is a lot of demand for more printings of certain lands. Those two factors combined push us doing more repeat lands in Commander products.

MTG Clue Edition Feedback

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by catboyslim1 68 Comments

Mark, I'd like to once again express my frustration with the format of MTG Clue Edition. While I understand that it was made as Jumpstart-esque packs to keep some of the 'variance', I just don't think a product at this price point benefits from that variance at all. Having the product in my hands now, all of my worst fears about it came true. Not only did I open three Orzhov packs, two of them were exactly the same. I also opened two Izzet packs that were exactly the same. The unique cards in the set can be opened nowhere else, not even in MKM Set or Collector Boosters, which makes it completely impossible to collect them all without opening multiple of MTG Clue Edition boxes, which cost a hefty amount.I do appreciation some experimentation with the format of Magic: the Gathering, and I think making a board game style box set is a great idea (Archenemy Nicol Bolas was a great example of this). I was legitimately very excited for this product at first. But the 'variance' in what cards you open doesn't make it more fun, it just leads to a lot of feels bads.I ask that you pass along to the relevant people that in the future, if a product like this is made, that it includes all of the possible unique cards within.Thank you.

I can pass that note along.

Foil Only Card Policy

New 29 Dec 2023 Asked by riptidecrab 43 Comments

Any card that is printed foil only in a commander deck can and should be printed plain in collector boosters. Same goes for other alt treatments. Mmkay?

Two issues: 1) Not every product has a collector booster associated with it. 2) When we ask collector booster buyers if they want nonfoil collector cards in the collector boosters, the large majority say they do not.

Boosters and Commander Cards

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by barathtendar 32 Comments

Regarding the shift to Play Boosters: One item used in Set and Collector Boosters that wasn’t mentioned at all in your article is Commander set cards, both from the decks, and extra cards that are only available in Set and Collector Boosters. Are these going to now only be available in Collector Boosters? That would mean that the non-deck Commander cards would be price walled quite a bit…

We’re stopping them in premier sets.

UB Precon Token Request

New 21 Oct 2023 Asked by clarknes 27 Comments

Can I request that for future universes beyond commander precons with collector boosters, the double sided tokens in the boosters match sides with the ones in the precons? I’m keeping 4 decks to play together and got a special Deckbox with 4 token compartments, but some of the foil tokens are tokens for 2 different decks. It’s a small problem but it is a bit inconvenient.

I can pass the request along.

Naming Product Strategy

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by rc-ds2 28 Comments

Hello, Good Sir,Why not just call Play Boosters ‘Booster Packs’ again and just have ‘Booster Packs’ and ‘Collector Booster Packs’?

To avoid confusion. It helps when each product has a word only associated with it.

Draft Boosters vs Play Boosters

New 18 Oct 2023 Asked by darkrrevenant 37 Comments

If draft boosters weren't selling well outside draft, wouldn't the easiest solution be to just print less draft boosters and print more set/collector boosters?

That’s what we were doing. The problem is there’s a point where the number dips low enough that it’s not financially viable to print it. That’s the direction we were headed, and the cause of us making the switch.

Commander Card Exclusivity

New 17 Oct 2023 Asked by abl831 45 Comments

I appreciate that Universes Within re-skins will be found (and draftable!) in Play Boosters. You said in a previous post that booster-exclusive Commander cards would not be in Play Boosters. Are these cards going to be exclusive to Collector Boosters? I would be disappointed if there were cards that only could be found in a premium-priced booster.

We are not doing them in premier sets any more.

Evolving Magic Formats

New 17 Oct 2023 Asked by wildcardgamez 38 Comments

What are your thoughts on magic these past few years? For many years the formula has barely ever changed, but in the past 5 or so years we've seen that formula shift multiple times a year. Set Boosters, the List, Commander Precons with every set, Collector Boosters, Universes Beyond, Serialized chase cards, more sets in a year than fingers on a hand, Theme Boosters, Jumpstart Set Boosters, now Play Boosters. It looks like all of the sudden it got so chaotic and has been everchanging since.

We kept changing up how three-set blocks got put together, then we changed two two-set blocks, then to the three-and-one model, then we changed from the design & development model to the exploratory design/vision design/set design/play design model, then we moved to the flexible set model. All of that was over five years ago. Magic throughout its history has constantly been in flux. What parts are changing evolves over time, but there is no point where Magic isn’t constantly reinventing itself.

Collector Boosters Draftability

New 16 Oct 2023 Asked by heavenlyevan 25 Comments

Beyond making play boosters, was there any thought to making collector boosters become draftable? Like being a higher power draft booster for a set?

We have no data that says collector booster purchasers care if the packs are draftable.

Set and Draft Boosters

New 16 Oct 2023 Asked by heavyonthemeta 33 Comments

Hi Mark,I'm a huge Magic fan! So much so that my fiance and I are making our own card game and taking inspiration from things we enjoy about playing Magic together. I enjoy collecting alternate art treatments, and my favorite format is limited. However, I am concerend about the collapsing of set and draft boosters. Was there any consideration regarding replacing or combining set and collector boosters instead of set and draft boosters? Because in my mind, those are products that fill a more similar role in that they a) are not draftable and b) offer alternative art treatments. To me, it seems like set boosters were a more affordable way to get certain treatments and offered a better value per pack than collector boosters. So why did Wizards instead decide to combine set and draft boosters, which have never fit the same niche? Why not just have one product for alternate arts and one for draft? That way, you would not have to fundamentally redesign how you make sets. Further, do you think that you would ever go back to making just draft boosters if, based on data and player feedback, limited play and set design suffer in the long term from this fundamental change? Thank you.

As I spell out in my article today, the issue was draft boosters were in danger of going away. Players preferred set boosters because they feel they were better value, and it became harder and harder for stores/regions to justify getting draft boosters. This was having a huge impact on players ability to play limited which we feel is an important part of the play experience. Combining set boosters and collector boosters would have done nothing to solve this problem.

Reprints in New Sets

New 11 Oct 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 52 Comments

Hey Mark,

Fairly recently, on one of your podcasts you were talking about when designing new sets how important it is to generate hype and excitement among the audience with new mechanics/cards/ideas. To me, it feels like in many of the recent sets with bonus sheets, reprints of 10+ year old cards that many enfranchised players have already played with or against are the aspects of the sets that are causing the most enthusiasm. Similarly, these cards often strongly influence Limited games to the point where games are won or lost because of old cards rather than new designs. To me it feels kind of underwhelming that the most powerful cards I can encounter in a draft or collector booster for a brand new Premier set aren't new cards but instead old staples (i.e. think Smothering Tithe and Rhystic Study in Wilds of Eldraine).

Reprints are important and players enjoy them, especially veteran players, but I do feel they take away the spotlight and attention when it comes to new premier sets.

Magic has tons of ways to reprint highly sought after cards (i.e. Secret Lairs, "The List", Reprint exclusive Masters sets, Commander pre-constructed decks) so why has there been an increased proliferation of lots of highly sought after reprints in new premier sets?

It has proven to be the means players enjoy the most. You get the reprints in the sets you’re already purchasing instead of having to buy other products specifically for the reprints.

Special Guest Cards

New 30 Sep 2023 Asked by j-waffles 22 Comments

Where can the special guest cards be opened? Are they like a bonus sheet? Or are they exclusive to certain boosters?

They are in the set boosters and collector boosters for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan.
