Clue Tokens

Clue Card Mechanic

If a card had “gift a clue” would the reminder text read “they create a clue token” or “they investigate”?

You don’t have your investigate to create a Clue.

Inspiration behind Clue Tokens

Were Clue tokens inspired by the Ravnica Cluestones?

No. We were trying to figure out how to draw half a card.

Investigate Term Retention

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by sparkyyoungupstart 28 Comments

I totally understand your feeling that tying clue creation to a keyword was a mistake, especially with hindsight and all the predefined tokens we have now. But that makes me curious as to whether there was ever any discussion of doing away with Investigate for MKM? It does seem like a perfect opportunity to cut out the middleman and simply say that a card creates a clue token.

Cutting the term investigate on a set about murder mysteries seemed wrong.

Popularity of Food Tokens

New 08 Dec 2023 Asked by zackdes44 87 Comments

I don't see why people like food tokens so much. Treasure is obviously very good, maybe too good when done in large amounts, clue tokens seem balanced even in large amounts, food is too weak to be viable yet people love it. Can you explain why designers and some people seem to like food tokens so much? Thanks

  1. Food isn’t inherently “too weak”
  2. Life gain is popular
  3. Food, as a flavor, is popular

Support for Clue Tokens

New 20 Oct 2023 Asked by valerico 40 Comments

Any word on clue support the same way food and treasures has recently been getting support?

I’m confident we’ll see clue again, but probably not at the ongoing level Food and Treasure get.

Keyword Mechanic Changes

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by je-suis-en-retard 28 Comments

Bonsoir, Mark! When new keyword mechanics are made, we sometimes see old cards with identical text errata'd to have the keyword (like Surveil, recently). Is the reverse possible? For example, could Investigate on old cards be replaced with "Create a Clue token" if the designers felt it was the best approach?

I think we’re going to continue with investigate for creating Clue tokens.

Clue Token Issue

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by truetgirl 25 Comments

Is there a rules-based reason it's difficult to uncouple clue tokens from the investigate keyword, or is it purely a flavor/player familiarity concern?

We can print cards that just create clue tokens. It’s more of an expectation issue than a rules one.

Token Keyword Regret

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by suigenyukiouji 45 Comments

Since "investigate" exists as shorthand for "create a Clue token", do you think we could get "cook" to replace "create a Food token"?

We consider tying token to a keyword action a mistake, and thus, stopped doing it for later tokens.

Investigate Mechanic Future

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by gamma-3 28 Comments

Is there any chance of Investigate being considered deprecated and just saying "create a clue token" going forward?

If the right said came along where clue made sense, but investigate didn’t, we’d explore it.

Karlov Manor Mechanic Hint

New 06 Aug 2023 Asked by paladinofthelosthour 36 Comments

Can I get a yes on Murder at Karlov Manor featuring the return of Investigate and Clue tokens? (I know you need to keep things vague but c’mon how does it not?)

Maybe. : )

Artifact Tokens Future

If/when: artifact tokens that are like multiple types at once? (like a food clue token)

When.

Clue Token Creation

New 27 Feb 2023 Asked by thornthallid 37 Comments

Is it too late to divorce clue creation from investigate, or is that a change you might make for consistencies sake?

We’re allowed to do it if it feels right for a set. We don’t have to investigate to make Clue tokens.

Token Keyword Evolution

New 26 Feb 2023 Asked by arachnigamer-blog 59 Comments

Is there a reason why creating a clue token gets a keyword but creating a treasure or food token doesn't?

Clues were just early in the technology of making noncreature artifact tokens. I don’t think it would have a word if we created it today.

Artifacts' Nature Explained

New 13 Aug 2022 Asked by largepileofratsandlizards 41 Comments

Hey Mark! I was just constructing a food deck and I got to wondering: is there a reason you guys chose to make them artifacts? The same question sort of applies to blood and clue tokens as well: while treasures are certainly artifacts, most other consumable tokens require some mental leaps to apply that type. Clues are abstract and could be anything, blood is less of an artifact than the vial it's stored in, and I think if I described anyone's food as an "artifact" I would be promptly asked to leave. To be clear, I love how the tokens play and they've done wonders for artifact synergy decks. I'm just curious about the dubious *flavor* of food as artifacts. Was it mostly a logistics issue that prevented you guys from making a new card type like "consumable" or something? Should I just mentally translate the word "artifact" into something more generic like "item" in mtg contexts?

Of the card types, artifact is the only one that represents nonliving tangible objects, so things that are tangible things but not alive are labeled artifacts.

Potential Enchantment Token Versions

New 23 Apr 2022 Asked by blazemon13 36 Comments

Regarding the question where you mentioned Enchantment token versions of treasure food or clue tokens wouldn't produce something tangible, would it produce something more like energy or electricity? Something that naturally doesn't have a physical form?

Think more like nontangible concepts: time, happiness, confusion, etc.

Investigating Detective/Sleuth Cards

New 09 Apr 2022 Asked by itylas 24 Comments

The new set looks really interesting so far. I have to ask though, with the detective/ sleuth cards that have been so far was investigate/ clue tokens considered at all? It feels like a very natural fit

There are not a lot of detective/sleuth cards.

Investigate Mechanic Return

Is there a maybe on investigate returning sometime soon in a set? I enjoy clue tokens and synergies that use them!

I have faith we’ll see it again.

Investigate Mechanic and Clue Tokens

New 11 Jan 2022 Asked by erok-lrrfan 39 Comments

Flavorfully shouldn't you sac a clue to investigate? How likely would you say a card that makes clue tokens without investigate?

You investigate and find a clue. One day, we might make Clue tokens without investigating.

Stranger Things Cards' Release Timing

New 21 Oct 2021 Asked by royinversezx 47 Comments

With their focus on investigate and clue tokens why werent the Stranger Things cards in the list starting from innistrad/crimson vow? Unless investigate is also a theme on cappena?

The Stranger Things Secret Lair release date is connected to the show. The List date is just six months later.

Differences Among Artifact Tokens

New 30 Sep 2021 Asked by nasilemakdurian-deactivated2021 38 Comments

Why don't Clue tokens need to be tapped unlike Treasure and Food tokens?

They were made first and we didn’t have as much experience with artifact tokens.
