hello! i hope you’re well. recently on reddit there was a discussion about wood elemental, one of the worst creatures ever. i remember hearing on your podcast that you tried to design a “fixed” wood elemental but can’t remember the card. do you remember which card it was?

Here’s Wood Elemental:
And here’s my horrible attempt to make a “better” Wood Elemental:

Value in Weak Cards

"“Bad cards” are really “cards aimed at someone other than me”." - Counterpoint - Wood Elemental

I’ve known four different people (one of them being me) who built a Wood Elemental deck because we all wanted the challenge of winning with one. I don’t believe we should necessarily make purposefully horrible creatures all that often, but my point is there’s even an audience who has fun with truly weak cards.

Fungus Elemental Trivia

Happy holidays Mark! It's my birthday today and if possible I would love some trivia on one of my favourite cards of all time, Weatherlight's Fungus Elemental, please!

Fungus Elemental was a redesign of the card Wood Elemental from Legends. I believe the design name was Woodier Elemental. Happy Birthday!

Mana Costs Frequency

"We very infrequently make mana costs with more than three of the same mana symbol." Specifically, 24 times, not including Un-cards. Almost all of those were four of the same symbol; the only exceptions are Rushwood Elemental (GGG GG), Primalcrux (GGG GGG), and Khalni Hydra (GGG GGG GG).

Whisperwood Elemental's Greenness

What aspect of green is the manifest ability of Whisperwood Elemental?

Green is the color of life and is primary in token making (along with white) and putting creatures onto the battlefield from hand and library.

Judging Morph and Manifest

New 29 Dec 2014 Asked by epsilonson 23 Comments

Was the judges need to make calls in an environment with both Whisperwood Elemental and creatures with morph taken under consideration during development?

It was. Pretty extensively actually. In the end, we decided the game play of manifest was worth the impact it was going to have on organized play.

Burn Spells Logic

New 02 Feb 2014 Asked by cairnwanderer 19 Comments

Why don't more burn spells say Non-Elemental creature?

Because elementals in Magic are of many different elements. Sure a Fire Elemental should laugh off a Fireball but a Wood Elemental shouldn’t.

Yes, good for everyone. : )
