Wheel of Fortune Effects

Are Wheel of Fortune effects still in pie for Red? Or are draw sevens now Blue/Green?

Red still gets them on occasion.

Wheel of Fortune Reprint

New 27 Apr 2022 Asked by evanplaysmtg 33 Comments

Wheel of Fortune... too dangerous to take it off the reserved list and reprint? Many decks would love the benefit of a full wheel in EDH I figure.

The Reserved List has nothing to do with power. There are plenty of weak cards on it.

Proposal of an Un-Card

New 25 Jan 2022 Asked by squirreling-dervish 47 Comments

Can I get a maybe on an un-card that uses a spinner for variance (a la Life or Wheel of Fortune (the gameshow or card artwork)) instead of dice? I like the clicky sound and suspense of a long spin.

R&D Views on Wheeling

New 20 Oct 2021 Asked by impolitemtg 37 Comments

WheelingNEW:Primary: RedThere's a big debate in R&D as to whether this is supposed to be a red ability. It obviously goes all the way back to Limited Edition (Alpha) with Wheel of Fortune, but it's a raw form of card advantage that's supposed to be something red is bad at. For now, it stays in red's part of the color pie.
We decided that we do this infrequently enough that it could just be a red thing. We felt blue didn't need it nearly as bad a red did."Why not just make Wheeling secondary in blue to fix this debate within R&D? I agree with the assessment that wheels work better in Red. You forgo any plans you had for the chance at a better path forward. It leads to a sense of impulsiveness within a game of magic, especially in commander where everyone now has to make up their plans on the fly. If you're worried about card advantage, restrict the cards drawn to the cards pitched, which some wheels already do.
Thanks for your time and this article, it was a fun read!

It was secondary in blue (see the 2017 Mechanical Color Pie). We removed it because it wasn’t an effect we used often enough to have a secondary color.

White Card Restrictions

New 17 Jun 2021 Asked by lichtsula 29 Comments

If white's way to draw multiple cards a turn is to let opponents do it too, does that mean that Wheel of Fortune could be a white card? If not, what would have to change?

White doesn’t do the discard part.

Understanding White Symmetrical Draw

New 29 Nov 2020 Asked by bunsenburn 27 Comments

To follow up the Wheel of Fortune question, how does white symmetrical draw work? What can it do, and what can it not do?

I believe white can make you and any number of opponents (at least one) draw up to three cards.

White's Symmetrical Draw vs Wheel of Fortune

New 29 Nov 2020 Asked by bunsenburn 26 Comments

Would an effect similar to Wheel of Fortune be in white's color pie as it now has symmetrical draw, provided it underwent some minor changes but still did largely the same thing?

White’s symmetrical draw isn’t for that many cards and white, despite Balance’s existence, isn’t about making people discard.

Red vs. Blue Mechanics

New 29 Aug 2019 Asked by bcrossfire 27 Comments

Can red do targeted rummaging the way blue does targeted looting? Like "Target player discards a card, then draws a card".

No, that would be discard and red doesn’t make opponents discard (with the current exception being Wheel of Fortune where everyone exchanges their hand).

Red Wheel Effects

New 29 Aug 2019 Asked by justy-moehre 36 Comments

Red has so many Wheel effect. Why is making a player discard one card then draw one card any different?

There’s a big debate on the Council of Colors whether red is supposed to deal Wheel of Fortune effects. Regardless, making all players replace their whole hand is very different than making an opponent discard a card.

Wheel of Fortune Thoughts

Hey Mark, what are your feelings on wheel of fortune?

It’s more card advantage through drawing than I like in red, but we haven’t found a better place to put the effect.

Boros Wheel Idea

New 20 Jan 2019 Asked by lastnobody 32 Comments

Boros wheel (draw 7, not draw the same as discarded) if or when?

Major if. The Council of Colors still debates about how red Wheel of Fortune (as opposed to Winds of Change) is. Adding white doesn’t help that argument any.

Wheel Effects Dispute

Which side of the "are wheel effects red" argument are you on?

I think Winds of Change is red but Wheel of Fortune is not. Too much potential card draw fur ted.

Color Wheel Disagreements

What's something that the Council of Colors is not in consensus on?

Whether Wheel of Fortune effects (discard hand and draw a new hand of seven) are supposed to be red.

Jeopardy Card Reference

New 18 Apr 2018 Asked by pjweisberg 57 Comments

There's a card in Boss Monster that makes everyone discard their hand and draw a new one. It's called Jeopardy, and the illustration looks like Alex Trebek. It's a rather oblique reference to Wheel of Fortune.

Red Discard Mechanic

New 07 May 2017 Asked by sylvhem 53 Comments

""Can red force all players discard their hands and draw new ones?" Yes, although it is a subject of much R&D debate." In which side of this debate are you on?

I find Wheel of Fortune a little too card advantage-y for red but there’s not a great other place to put it. Blue doesn’t particularly need it.

Restrictions on Red

New 07 May 2017 Asked by thetragiccomedian-deactivated20 20 Comments

Could red get, "target opponent discards a land"?

No. Red doesn’t do permanent discard (with the exception of Wheel of Fortune and Winds of Change variants).

Wheel Effects Colors

New 13 Nov 2016 Asked by drederick22 34 Comments

I've been wondering about wheel effects and where it currently stands in the color pie. From what you've said here and recent cards; Red has 'winds of change' effect and sometime 'wheel of fortune' effect. Blue has 'windfall' effect and sometime 'timetwister' effect. Black has 'wheel' effect minus one and blue/black also has 'windfall'. Is this a correct assessment? why is this effect in so many colors?

It’s an effect that’s relatively infrequent that we’ve never nailed down. We should.

Multiplayer Game Madness

Happy birthday! I'm not sure if this is a funny story or a horror story, but here goes: Back in college, I once observed a 10-12 player multiplayer game. One of the player's cast Wheel of Fortune. I heard it took around 3 hours to resolve. The reason? Zur's Weirding.

I think it’s funny. : )
