Power 9 for Standard

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by anonleoleo 30 Comments

What card of the "Power 9" is the closest to printable in a standard set?

Timetwister was the weakest of the nine, but that’s still not close to Standard power level.

Timetwister in White?

New 02 Nov 2023 Asked by j-waffles 19 Comments

Since it is an equalizing effect, would timetwister be in pie for white?

It would not.

White's Symmetric Draw

New 29 Nov 2019 Asked by animatedscreenshots 24 Comments

Since white is getting symmetric draw, does that mean Timetwister effects are now in white? (Such as Once More With Feeling?)

We’re limiting how many cards are getting drawn as above a certain level, it’s too much like traditional card draw. So, no.

Fairness of Time Spiral

What makes timetwister, windfall, wheel of fortune unfair, but time spiral is fair?

Who said Time Spiral was fair?

Wheel Effects Colors

New 13 Nov 2016 Asked by drederick22 34 Comments

I've been wondering about wheel effects and where it currently stands in the color pie. From what you've said here and recent cards; Red has 'winds of change' effect and sometime 'wheel of fortune' effect. Blue has 'windfall' effect and sometime 'timetwister' effect. Black has 'wheel' effect minus one and blue/black also has 'windfall'. Is this a correct assessment? why is this effect in so many colors?

It’s an effect that’s relatively infrequent that we’ve never nailed down. We should.

Arcane Spell Possibility

New 22 Feb 2016 Asked by shadownet13579-blog 27 Comments

Theoretically, could Time Walk, Ancestral Recall, & Timetwister be functionally reprinted as arcane spells ( even though it violates the "spirit" of the reserved list)

We’re not violating the spirit.

Sol Ring Power Level

New 26 Nov 2015 Asked by worst-riven-na-blog 77 Comments

I agree with the idea of sol ring being quite powerful. Personally I'd disagree with as powerful as the P9, but I'd say close to right under it. Something something 4 of in every deck. Just tossing my hat in the ring no real question here.

I think Sol Ring is more powerful than Timetwister.

Dangerous Design Attempts

New 24 Jun 2015 Asked by envoyofghosts 99 Comments

So, uh, after you got burned with fixed Ancestral Recall, why'd you go and make a fixed Timetwister?

R&D likes flirting with danger. : )

Time Spiral Naming

New 26 Jan 2015 Asked by thesharkupon 20 Comments

Did you ever consider naming Time Spiral- Timetwister?

I think that was actually one of the names on the list.

Standard Power Conservatism

New 29 Dec 2014 Asked by anonleoleo 19 Comments

It's strange to see things that are "too strong" for standard when you guys can easily set what is or isn't too strong for standard. I could imagine a standard where something like Timetwister isn't too good, but it seems like you guys are much, much more conservative than that.

Development aims for a specific power level for Standard so by definition certain cards and effects are “too strong for Standard”.

Time Spiral Origins

New 15 Dec 2014 Asked by ilgreven 17 Comments

Who designed Time Spiral (the card, not the set)?

I designer the free mechanic and William Jockusch thought of putting a Timetwister on it.

Power 9 Reprint Odds

New 29 Sep 2014 Asked by jwiley129 28 Comments

Which member of the Power 9 is the most likely to get a functional reprint in a Standard Legal set? I.e. Storm Scale of functional reprints of Power 9?

None for both Reserved List and power level reasons. Assuming recosting, Timetwister is the most likely to get redone with a cost closest to the original. Either that or moxes.

Exhilarating Card Trade

New 18 Nov 2013 Asked by time-elemental 28 Comments

Which Magic<\b> card trade was your most exhilarating one ?

Long, long ago, someone wanted my Volcanic Island to finish their set (this was back when Beta was just known as “Magic”). I didn’t want to give it up and said no, but I was the only Volcanic Island they had ever seen. They kept offering me more and more until I couldn’t say no. They traded me seventeen cards for my Volcanic Island including a Time Walk and Timetwister. That was a crazy trade, one I actually tried to stop.

Power Nine and NWO

New 25 Aug 2013 Asked by tsuyoshikentsu 7 Comments

Follow-up to the Ancestral Recall question: Would NWO stop *any* of the Power Nine? They all seem very simple in execution; even Timetwister, the most complex of the bunch, seems NWO-compliant with its current reminder text in Oracle.

New World Order is about complexity at common. Ancestral Recall’s effect is a little pushed for common but possibly doable. Time Walk and Timetwister are way too big of effects for common. Both are also much more complex than Ancestral Recall. “Take an extra turn” might sound simple but it involves numerous steps. The Moxen and Black Lotus are like Ancestral Recall in that it isn’t their complexity keeping them out of common from a New World Order perspective.

Red-Green Timetwister

New 25 Jan 2013 Asked by tablegames-blog-blog 2 Comments

So, with that being said about Winds of Change vs. Wheel of Fortune in red: could a Timetwister that only lets people redraw as many cards as they discarded be RG?

Probably.  Note that when I said red isn’t about “card advantage” I meant when drawing cards. Red does mighty fine getting card advantage from its direct damage for example.

Timetwister Color Identity

New 24 Jan 2013 Asked by zemyla 6 Comments

Since red gets Wheel of Fortune and green can shuffle graveyards into libraries, could Timetwister be RG?

Red gets discard your hand and draw the same number. It hasn’t had Wheel of Fortune since, well, Alpha.

Editing Team Oversight

New 24 Aug 2012 Asked by dude1818 0 Comments

I noticed a typo on the Timetwister prize at the World Cup coming soon after Wit's End in M13. I think the editing team is slacking off! :P

The editing team was actually left out of the loop on it. They have asked to be included in the future so such things don’t happen again.

Power 9 Reprint Possibility

New 17 May 2012 Asked by vultures-descend-blog 5 Comments

will you ever do a power 9 from the vault

The Power 9 (Ancestral Recall, Black Lotus, Mox Emerald, Mox Jet, Mox Pearl, Mox Ruby, Mox Sapphire, Time Walk and Timetwister) are all on the Reserved List and thus cannot be reprinted (well, at least in paper).

Balancing Power 9

New 25 Mar 2012 Asked by ancient-chaos 1 Comments

Assuming the power 9 weren't on the reserved list, do you think that R&D could make a balanced standard format around them? On that note, what about Sol Ring, since it is reprintable?

None of the Power 9 or Sol Ring are anything close to fair. Timetwister’s the closest.

Power Nine Reprints

New 29 Sep 2011 Asked by projectgert-blog 4 Comments

Any chance of reprinting the power 9(Timewalk, Timetwister, Ancestral Recall, Black Lotus and the 5 original moxes)? The 'From the Vault' seems like a pretty good platform to show off these old cards.

All of the Power Nine is on the Reserved List which we’ve promised never to reprint which means I don’t think we’ll be seeing From the Vault: Power Nine anytime soon.
