Red Spells Design Space

Hi Mark! Is there still a lot of design space left for big splashy red spells like Warp World?

Sure.

Warp World Card Birthday Trivia

New 06 Mar 2022 Asked by coboney 36 Comments

My birthday was on February 23rd, I was wondering if you could tell me some trivia about one of my favourite cards Warp World, Eye of the Storm, or Master Apothecary

The success of Warp World has pushed us to make a series of rare red spells that add chaos to games. Happy Belated Birthday!

Perspectives on Warp World Commander

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by ginkasai 37 Comments

RE: Warp World. 10 people are in favor of a warp world commander, 7 are not in favor, and another 10 say that they're ok with the effect as a one-of but wouldn't want a repeatable commander. As far as salt, I will note its #26, sitting between Teferi, Time Raveler and Blightsteel Colossus on the salt list, if that means anything.

Concern Over Warp World

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 86 Comments

"I can add it to the list." I know you don't play Commander personally so I'll mention this because I'm not sure if the person requesting a legendary creature that has a "Warp World" effect was joking but Warp World is notoriously salt inducing and is widely acknowledged to be one of the most unfun cards to play against in the (Commander) format by numerous players. It takes forever to resolve because of all the triggers and is very complicated. Please don't make a Warp World commander.

Do any Commander players here like playing Warp World?

Color for Warp World Creature

re: a Warp World legendary creature. Do you think default it would be mono red barring other design concerns/demands?

Red is home to those style of effects.

Requested Legendary Creature Feature

Hyper specific request: Can we get a legendary creature with a Warp World effect?

I can add it to the list.

Red Enchantments Rarity

New 17 Apr 2018 Asked by jimharbor 40 Comments

Why are the "weird and wordy red enchantments" like Warp World, Sun Bird's Invocation, Form of the Dinosaur, Guild Feud and Haphazard Bombardment rare instead of Mythic? Thanks for answering our questions sir.

Cards that are complex and/or very niche oriented are put at rare rather than mythic rare which tends to get the more splashy effects.

Worlds Game Memory

New 25 May 2017 Asked by drkobolds 47 Comments

Happy Birthday Mark! We played a game while you were at Worlds 2008 in Memphis. I played W/r aggro that was secretly a Warp World- horde of hasty Goat tokens combo deck. I was hoping to show off the combo, but you got mana screwed and my deck won on turn 4 or 5 without ever tearing off its mask to say "HA!" There were people waiting, so I didn't feel comfortable drawing out the game. But you doodled an eyepatch on my Maro and taught me that, yes, absolutely everyone gets mana screwed sometimes.

I would have loved to see the combo happen.

Errata and Planeswalkers

New 21 Oct 2016 Asked by piogre 32 Comments

When the Planeswalker creature type was added, did Wizards consider adding an errata to Warp World to include planeswalkers, or was it not considered as an option (I ask because the Morphic Tide plane, printed after Planeswalkers, is the same as Warp World except that it includes Planeswalkers)

We try to avoid functional errata, so yes newer cards will reference things that might not have been referenced earlier because they didn’t exist yet.

Red's Chaotic Nature

New 08 Nov 2015 Asked by ionbound 37 Comments

Since Chaos Warp is out of the question, how would you represent the Chaotic Aspect of Red in-game? Or is Chaos not in the game's design space anymore? And if so, is there any further depth to red than just raw emotion?

Warp World is fine. Red can do chaos. Chaos Warp, ironically, is not chaotic enough.

Fate of Chaotic Sorceries

New 25 Jul 2015 Asked by damullet 40 Comments

Have we seen the last of giant doofy red Sorceries that embody chaos, like Warp World or Whims of the Fates?

No.

Goblin Game Trivia

New 11 May 2015 Asked by skobvs-blog 25 Comments

It's *finally* my birthday after nearly a year of following you! Could I please get trivia on Game of Chaos, Warp World or Goblin Game?

We spend a lot of time templating Goblin Game trying to figure out what items you’re supposed to use and finally said let people use whatever they want. Happy Birthday!

Chaos Warp Debate

New 02 May 2015 Asked by keith-cancel 22 Comments

If Choas warp isn't supposed to be red wouldn't the same apply to warp world?

Chaos Warp’s issue is that it gives Red pinpoint enchantment destruction which it isn’t supposed to have.

Red's World Reset

New 15 Jan 2015 Asked by silenceresplendant 32 Comments

In response to the "Red can't deal with enchantments", Can you tell which (if any) enchantments can survive Worldfire or Warp World?

I was exaggerating a little. Red is allowed to reset the world every once in a blue moon.

Warp World vs Chaos Warp

New 10 Jan 2015 Asked by dragnime 22 Comments

Do you have the same problems with warp world as you do chaos warp? If not why?

I have less issues with Warp World as it doesn’t undercut Red’s weakness nearly as strongly as Chaos Warp. Also, we let Red occasionally answer problems but making giant shifts. It plays up Red’s lack of subtlety. Red has problem with one enchantment, well it’s only answer is to change everything.

Red Enchantment Removal

New 16 May 2014 Asked by cervantes3 13 Comments

Mark, do you not like Warp World? Because Chaos Warp is just a targeted version of Warp World.

Red is allowed a little bit of enchantment removal (and very little at that) when it destroys everything. Targeted removal is far from “everything”.

Chaos Player Category

New 23 Aug 2013 Asked by jeanlucncoelho 15 Comments

Mark, shouldn't there be a psychographic profile for people who play to "watch the world burn" and break the dynamics of the game? I am a personal fan of crazy cards such as warp world, hive mind, eye of the storm, wild evocation, omen machine, teferi's puzzle box, etc. and I don't feel like i fit into any of the current profiles.

You are a Timmy. You get a visceral excitement from some certain style of play happening.

Color Pie Opinions

New 02 Aug 2013 Asked by greengecko81-deactivated2019081 6 Comments

If you think Chaos Warp breaks color pie, do you feel the same way about Warp World? What about Sylvan Library?

I’m okay with Warp World. Sylvan Library shouldn’t let you pay life for cards (as a monogreen card).

Chaos Warp Discussion

New 08 Aug 2012 Asked by chaosof99 3 Comments

So Chaos Warp goes against the Color Pie in your opinion. How about Warp World? Isn't it the same effect only on a different scale, or does the scale make it acceptable for red to blow up enchantments in the same manner as Apocalypse and Worldfire allow it. And if so, is this the only effect that is wrong for one color in small scale, but okay in large scale?

My issues with Chaos Warp are mostly execution. The idea of red harnessing chaos is an interesting one and it isn’t off the table as a means of finding cool things for red to do.

Chaos Warp Critique

New 07 Jun 2012 Asked by altik-0 1 Comments

You say that you think of Chaos Warp like you do of Hornet Sting. Why? It feels fairly red to me - a removal spell that is really more of a gamble: your opponent may end up with another permanent better than the one before, they may end up with the same creature; no way to know. Functionally it's just a limited-scope Warp World (ie, if you were to Radiate it, you get the same thing as Warp World, mostly).

Okay, Chaos Warp isn’t as bad as Hornet Sting, but I’m still not a big fan.
