Uphill Battle

Chance for Un-set

What are the odds of us ever getting another Un-set?

Let’s call it an uphill battle. But that was true at times in the past.

Return Possibility of Infect

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 34 Comments

With R&D no longer liking-1/-1 counters, does that mean Infect is likely a no go anytime soon?

Infect’s return was always an uphill battle. I never say never though.

Lorwynand/Shadowmoor Return Likelihood

New 03 Mar 2020 Asked by aztyn-games 47 Comments

What is the likely hood of returning to lorwyn/shadowmoor? Also the possibility of bitterblossom in standard?

The former is more likely than the latter, although both have an uphill battle.

Muraganda Potential

New 18 Jan 2020 Asked by tonyredgravedmc 30 Comments

I do understand and agree that exploring unexplored space does not inherently mean fun and certainly doesn't always yield fun, but could/would you console me/other Muragandan advocates by saying you might pioneer the initiative IF ever the opportunity to make a fun set using a "vanilla" (sub)theme arises?

I’m not against the idea if the right circumstance comes along, but as my whole podcast dedicated to the issue explained in depth, the theme has a mighty uphill battle, plagued with difficult problems to solve.

Motivation for Un-3 Creation

New 10 Jul 2018 Asked by goku332 62 Comments

If Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is an uphill battle like the Un sets, why was Un 3 made? Don't misunderstand. I get it why The Powers that Be don't want to take a chance. 100% makes sense from a business perspective. I just don't understand why Un- 3 was made then, I guess is my Q.

We got Un-3 made because we were able to prove with data that Unglued and Unhinged did, in fact, sell well but were overprinted.

Challenges of Plane Returns

New 09 Jul 2018 Asked by usernamesarehard17 210 Comments

Hi Mark, I see that very frequently people ask you about return to kamigawa or Lorwyn-Shadowmoor etc , and you reply its a hard pitch for various reasons such as it didn't do well do well in market research or sales weren't great or another important factor. So my question is what Would it take to make the pitch easier to make or is it just something the powers that be decided that the information they have is just too convincing to be swayed?

The hard truth is it’s an uphill battle. It’s very easy to prove with data that an old set failed and very hard to prove with data that a new one occurring in the same world would succeed. The novelty of proving a failed concept is redeemable is popular among fans, but from a business perspective, it’s seen as an unnecessary gamble. Why devote extensive resources to an idea that’s already proven difficult when there are so many other opportunities that are less risky yet equally enticing to the audience? The best chance is for us to take smaller swings in supplemental sets or things like Magic Origins that give worlds (like Lorwyn) a chance for smaller exposure to try and build up new equity.

Interest in Playing

New 29 Jul 2017 Asked by great-rusher-blog 37 Comments

"Does she show any interest in playing?" She loves fantasy, love strategy games, but little interest in Magic. Don't know why.

If the person is not interested in learning, you are facing an uphill battle. Might she be interested in the story or color pie philosophy? It’s important for her to approach the game in a way that’s positive for her.

Champions of Kamigawa

New 23 Jun 2017 Asked by mrpopogod 70 Comments

"Kamigawa also needs a Council of Marks (aka an internal group or individual) pulling for it. Without a champion, it’s tough to win an uphill battle." If only we could find some Champions of Kamigawa.

: )

Kamigawa Support

New 23 Jun 2017 Asked by majorax 45 Comments

Heh, heh. You said you showed your blog to the higher-ups as evidence of a demand for a third UN-set. Did you do the same for Kamigawa?

Kamigawa also needs a Council of Marks (aka an internal group or individual) pulling for it. Without a champion, it’s tough to win an uphill battle.

Energy Counter Depletion

New 02 May 2017 Asked by ashmount-blog 31 Comments

Was the ever a point in design or development where you (as a team) considered ways to deplete opposing players energy counters? Like through damage or just a side effect of a card. Just curious is all.

No. Usually when you play around with a new resource system, you’re extra carefully about hosing it because it already has such an uphill battle to be relevant.

Hound vs. Dog

New 02 Mar 2017 Asked by tylerouzts 39 Comments

"Hound" is a synonym for "dog", is literally the first line on the Hound Wikipedia page. This is definitely an uphill battle.

I think if you asked 100 people if a poodle was a hound, the majority would say no.

Boldest Tarkir Design

New 05 Mar 2015 Asked by humanclothing 31 Comments

What do you think was the boldest design decision in Tarkir block? I mean, the thing that got the most pushback, or that had the highest chance of breaking the game, or that made the most fundamental change to the game?

Doing manifest was probably the biggest uphill battle of the block.

Returning to Planes

New 02 Aug 2013 Asked by tehpoker 14 Comments

"Why not focus on the ones that were popular and that a large number of players would be excited to return to versus ones that have an uphill battle because we have to overcome negative association?" Because to newer players, there is no difference between something new and returning to something really old. And because there is a not tiny portion of veteran players that would be excited to return to Ulgrotha, Kamigawa, Mercadia, Rabiah, etc.

New players in this day and age do not live in an information vacuum. If we return to an unpopular plane, they will know that because they will hear the feedback of the players who remember the original. This is the same reason that returning to popular planes is good for new players because they see the veteran players get excited about the return.

Rebooting Unpopular Planes

New 02 Aug 2013 Asked by tappwater2 13 Comments

I think you could reboot unpopular planes to do them well. Ex. I think if you announced the next set was Ulgotha a lit of players world have no idea what was up. (not saying you should on that one is to close to Innistrad, but in 5yrs maybe Kamigawa)

Our plan is to do a mix of new and returning planes. That means that there is a limited amount of space for returning planes. Why not focus on the ones that were popular and that a large number of players would be excited to return to versus ones that have an uphill battle because we have to overcome negative association? I’m not saying we’ll never try to reboot something that was less successful but it is fighting for a precious resource.

Creature Stat Pref

New 29 Jun 2012 Asked by hammerandsickled 5 Comments

Does design or development ever put thought into the impact of printing powerful creatures with "X/X+1" stats? We see it in Standard with Restoration Angel and Modern with Tarmogoyf (occasionally Legacy as well) where the mirror match when both have these creatures becomes a stalemate, because whoever attacks just gets blocked and then the blocker has the advantage because the other side is tapped. With other creatures, swinging into even trades is often a smart move just to clear up the board.

Let me state for the record, that I hate */*+1. And I love */*. I’ve been trying for years to get rid of */*+1 but it’s been an uphill battle.  When I designed Tarmogoyf, he was */* not */*+1.

Artbook Profitability Concerns

New 04 Jun 2012 Asked by sealofmagic 3 Comments

You said that the last artbook printed was during Tempest, which was around almost ten years ago ; don't you think it could be something to try again ? The public has expanded, as did the general art quality (and flavor) of the game.

Once bit, twice shy. Part of getting anything approved is trying to prove it will be profitable. That’s extra hard to do when last time you did it, it wasn’t (and not even close). That’s not to say it can’t happen, but it’s an uphill battle.
