The Reserved List

Reprinting 'Ali from Cairo' Joke

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by araglar 4 Comments

Since Ali from Cairo is on the Reserved List, and looks like a clear color pie break, and references a real-world city, I'm guessing that its odds of being reprinted in "Cairo" are slim, to say the least. But has anyone joked about putting it in the file?

Not yet, but I didn’t think of it. : )

Recurring Nightmare Reprint Query

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by niuttuc 11 Comments

Your article today mentions Set Design tried putting a straight Recurring Nightmare reprint into Modern, then removed it when it playtested too strong... Recurring Nightmare is on the Reserved List, which your article didn't mention. Did it not come up until after the playtests?

It’s possible they put it in and then remembered they couldn’t. I just know it was in the file for a short blip. Maybe they were getting a sense of it knowing they’d tweak it later.

Reserve List Cards' Oracle Text

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 18 Comments

What do you think about reserve list cards that have a different oracle text than what is printed on the card. They can never be reprinted in paper with the correct text so there will always be cards that are different from what is printed? Is that a concern or is that fine?

The bar to acquire Reserved List cards is high enough that it would be rare for players who can acquire them to not have a greater awareness that they are not up to date Oracle-wise.

Energy Mechanic Revisited

New 23 May 2024 Asked by gottok 7 Comments

I was under the impression that the Energy mechanic was widely considered to be problematic, given how it creates a fundamentally un-interactable resource. I am curious why Energy was chosen as a MH3 mechanic to "gate" reserved list cards, when it only contributes to the non-interactivity of powerful cards? If/when ways to interact with your opponent's Energy supply?

The problem with energy was simply we didn’t quite get the energy economy correct, making many of the cards overpowered. That is a fixable thing.

Reserved List Promise

New 05 May 2024 Asked by xansor 14 Comments

Is there really no possible future for reprints of any of the cards on the reserved list? I get why some cards like the power nine shouldnt be reprinted, but cards that are not banned or restricted in Eternal formats such as metalworker seem to not have a good reason for not reprinting them.

Other than the promise to never reprint them.

Triomes and the Reserved List

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by dragonkillrr 32 Comments

Would triomes that enter not tapped break the spirit of the reserved list? As in OG dual style untap with all 3 land types or would this be something allowed? And if so do you see it as a if or a when?

I don’t think this is something that makes the game better, so I’m dubious we want to do it.

Legacy Access Lands

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 31 Comments

If/When: Lands that are better than shocks but not as good as original duals? I'd love something that made legacy more accessible without violating the reserved list.

If, in premier sets. Probably when elsewhere. It’s a tricky spot to hit.

Reserved List Art Cards

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by su92 34 Comments

"It’s hard to do as we’re not allowed to print Reserved List cards in paper, regardless of what art it uses." No, I don't mean playable reserved list cards with new art. I meant art cards like the ones in Modern Horizons (full art, no rules text, no Magic back) just to showcase some of the new artwork that we'd never get to see in print otherwise.

Art cards might be possible.

Reserved List Art Cards

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by su92 19 Comments

There are many reserved list cards that got new illustrations in Magic Arena, Magic Online or promotional stuff (like the giant cards given in Vintage and Legacy Championships). Is it possible we get art cards of those illustrations in paper?

It’s hard to do as we’re not allowed to print Reserved List cards in paper, regardless of what art it uses.

Reserved List Restrictions

New 10 Jan 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 27 Comments

Can you print reserve list cards but restrict them to commander lime reprinting a dual land but you may only play it if you control your commander or your commander has been cast this game

Not by the rules of the Reserved List.

Revisiting Reprint Policy

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by irlnautica 39 Comments

Would Wizards ever consider winding the reprint policy back to where it was in 2010, where premium versions of Reserved List cards could still be printed? It would open up more possibilities for things like Secret Lairs, and nobody could accuse you of "broken promises" because the Reserved List wasn't meant to apply to premium cards in the first place.

We tried rolling The Reserved List back years ago, and the harsh response to that from the public is what cemented the current policies.

Un-set Reserved List

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by dwarf-scum 25 Comments

Hypothetically, would you be allowed to print cards that are on the reserved list (or functional/ near-functional reprints of them) in an Un-set if they were acorn? For example, could you print snow-covered versions of the original dual lands, but they have the acorn sticker just so that they aren’t eternal legal?

I don’t think that changes anything about our ability to print them.

Reserved List Perspectives

New 19 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 65 Comments

Re: “The majority [of players] don’t know what [the reserved list] is”While this is true, it feels kind of like a cop-out. Answering every question about the player base with “most magic players are kitchen table, they don’t even know what a planeswalker is” beats the point. For one thing, y’all obviously care about the desires of entrenched community quite a bit, since products made for us are made frequently. For another thing, it seems pretty obvious to me that the question “how do most players feel about (blank)” is asking about players who know what (blank) is. Saying “most people don’t know what the reserved list is” feels like dodging the question, because even though it’s true, it’s not an answer. “I don’t know what that is” isn’t an opinion, it’s the absence of it. If you don’t mind, I would like to rephrase the original question to clear up any ambiguity“What does the current data show about how people who have heard of the reserved list feel about the reserved list?”

I don’t presume that people are asking something other than what they are literally asking me. Doing so has caused issues in the past, so I answer what is asked of me. If I don’t answer the question the way an asker wants, they can rephrase it , as you have, and ask again. I haven’t seen data on The Reserved List in a while, but the “do not reprint it” faction is bigger than people assume. Somewhere around a third, if memory serves. Note our general surveys skew heavily enfranchised.

Reserved List Awareness

What's the most current market research you have on how players feel about the reserved list?

The majority don’t know what it is.

Reserved List Creation

If/when fire the guy who invented the reserved list

First, it was a team, not one person. Second, no one involved in the making the Reserved List still works at Wizards. It’s so old, it’s before my time at Wizards.

Reserved List Changes

New 18 Dec 2023 Asked by sneakersneak 64 Comments

At one point in time Sol Ring was on the RL along with like two dozen cards that are no longer on the RL. If cards could be removed in the past, why can't other cards be removed now or the future?

We tried taking small steps to reduce the Reserved List. One of those attempts upset enough people that we said we’d stop fiddling with it.

Spirit Reprint Query

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by spencetron420 28 Comments

Will we ever-ever see a reprint of Spirit of the Night? My all time favorite art.

Spirit of the Night is on the Reserved List, and thus, can’t get a reprint.

Reserved List Art Cards

New 01 Jul 2023 Asked by su92 23 Comments

There is a lot of updated art in Magic Online and Arena for cards in the reserved list. It's a shame those will never have an actual printing. Do you think those illustrations could be printed as art cards? (not playable)

It’s a possibility.

Reserved List Policy

New 22 Jun 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 20 Comments

Since the reserved list only applies to tournament-legal cards, if there was never another legacy or vintage tournament, could you reprint the OG duals?

No.

Reserved List Policy

New 03 Dec 2022 Asked by omghaileydee 53 Comments

You said repeatedly that reserved list cards wouldn't be reprinted regardless of border. What changed? Personally I'd love to see the reserved list done away with. I hope you can answer this.

Whenever I answer a question on this blog, I’m giving my best guess at the time.
