The Rack

Standard's Rack Potential

New 30 Aug 2022 Asked by fightklubblog-waffles-blog-blog 20 Comments

Rack effects appear to be few and far between, but it seems they aren't entirely off the table. Nothing against Davriel, but is there any room for the eponymous The Rack in Standard?

My gut is it’s stronger than we would want for Standard, but not a play designer, yada, yada.

Concerns about Discard Mechanic

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by cactusbonanza-deactivated202204 113 Comments

I don't understand why Discard - probably the most maligned supported mechanic - is continually buffed every set. Before a player even gets a TURN, a single mana will:

  • Disrupt the player's mulligan they took to keep a curve
  • Reveal a deck's colors/game plan
  • Disrupt the opponent's ability to interact (due to playing around known issues)
  • Get rid of a deck's key piece to winning.
  • Achieve card advantage
Discard, far more so than counterspells, is such bad gameplay/feeling, that most people quit on Turn 1 when a Durress/Thoughtseize, etc is played. I do. My opponent's do. Yesterday, you said you guys are careful to not make Discard so powerful, you create Discard decks. Then can you explain Tergrid? Tinybones? Waste Not? Gutmorn? Fell Specter? Sangromancer? If anything, you guys are pushing Discard, and thereby, pushing the most unfun, players-will-walk environment possible.

A few things:1) Discard is not the most maligned, but yes, there is a segment of the audience that dislikes it. There is also a segment of the audience that very much enjoys it and thinks it adds a lot to the game.2) By “discard decks”, I meant decks that do nothing but make the opponent discard and then use a win condition that takes advanatage of the opponent having no cards in hand (things like The Rack). 3) We do want decks (well, black ones at least) to have access to discard as a tool, but in moderation. Those individual cards can be powerful though.

Black Discard Payoff

New 24 Jan 2020 Asked by thrashunderpressure 34 Comments

Could we get a black discard pay off at common rarity? Something like a weaker The Rack or Nyxathid, or downshifted Megrim? Mono B Discard seems to be a classic mono b build, but not worth playing in pauper, because of no reward for getting rid off opponent's hand. How come blue have Jace's Erasure and Curse of the Bloody Tome at common...

We don’t tend to do build-around a at common. They usually start at uncommon.

The Rack Trivia

Hey Mark my birthday was Jan 14th. Any trivia on my Favorite card: The Rack?

The Racks in Bo Bell’s winning 1995 US Nationals deck were my dad’s. Bo traded for them right before the tournament started. Happy Belated Birthday!

Grand Calcutron Mechanics

New 03 Dec 2017 Asked by pbesteves 18 Comments

How the interaction between The Grand Calcutron and cards with Rack effects, such as The Rack, Rackling, Wheel of Torture, etc work? If I have Calcturon in play and I play The Rack, do I subtract 3 minus 0, since their hands bacame a program or I still count the amount of cards in their program?

The hand is a program but is still your hand, you count the number of cards in it for effects that care about number.

Stuffy Doll Trivia

It’s my birthday today! May I have some trivia on my favorite colorless card “stuffy doll”? Thanks Happy Halloween!

Stuffy Doll, originally pictured on Black Vise and The Rack, appeared in the art of a bunch on of cards (five or six, I believe). It would eventually get its own card in Time Spiral. Happy Birthday!

Standard Discard Payoffs

New 17 Dec 2016 Asked by facesinthestorm-deactivated2018 34 Comments

How likely are we to see cards similar to The Rack or Shrieking Affliction printed in a standard environment? There doesn't seem to be much payoff for running discard effects anymore.

Discard has proven to be one of those things that a majority of layers dislike strongly enough that we moved away from easily enabling a whole deck dedicated to the theme.

It is my birthday and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on my favorite modern deck's engine; The Rack and Shrieking Affliction : )

The Rack and its companion card Black Vise are two of the earliest cards to feature the Stuffy Doll, a stuffed doll that artist Richard Thomas often included in his art. I have a stuffed Stuffy Doll at my desk.Happy Birthday!

Stuffy Doll Art

Stuffy doll has been the star of many card arts including the rack, black vise, and wall of wonder. Is there any particular reason it was featured so commonly?

Richard Thomas was an artist who liked the Stuffy Doll and put in my of his paintings.

Avatar Card Trivia

New 24 Oct 2014 Asked by th58pz700u 27 Comments

Mark! My birthday was last Saturday and I've been asking everyday, please give me some birthday trivia on one of my favorite cards: Avatar or Woe, The Rack and Thoughtseize.

The Rack, in Antiquities, was made as a follow up to Black Vise, an artifact from Alpha. Instead of punishing a player for having too many cards in their hands, it punished them for having too few. It got played in a lot of discard decks in the day. The creature pictured in it, referred to affectionately as “Stuffy Doll”, first appeared in the art of Black Vise and was in The Rack as a joke that The Rack was a riff off of Black Vise. Happy Birthday!

San Jose Trivia Share

New 29 Mar 2014 Asked by thekingofpho 35 Comments

Hey Mark, it's finally my birthday. I want to try something different. Do you have any magic trivia about my home town San Jose, California? If not then tell me about Bonfire of the Dammed.

San Jose was the site of the 1994 US National Championships, the only Nationals I ever played in. As the event was about to begin, the man running the event, Steve Bishop for those that know their Magic history, got up on a chair and made the following announcement: “For those that might not have seen our announcement on the website, this tournament will not allow any card with an expansion symbol. For cards that exist on some cards with an expansion symbol and some without, you may only play the copies without it. I’ll give you fifteen minutes to fix your decks.” My dad ended up trading with Bo Bell, the eventual winner, giving him some core set versions of The Rack that he needed (Bo was playing a monoblack discard deck.) Happy birthday!

Handsize and Torture

New 27 Mar 2014 Asked by dankesteinphd 72 Comments

Can you explain to me the flavorful connection between handsize and torture devices? I'm talking about Thumbscrews, Iron Maiden, Black Vise, The Rack, ect.

Your hand is the part of your brain that is currently actively thinking. You know messes that up? Stress. You know what’s stressful? Torture.

Creatureless Set Concerns

New 05 Jan 2014 Asked by keith-cancel 35 Comments

When say that creatures are core to the game and would lead to bad limited environment. Why couldn't the set have lot direct damage cards and milling cards. Codex Shredder, the rack, lightning bolt, mind skulpt, millstone, cursed scroll, Shivan Gorge.

Let’s take direct damage. Okay, you have a deck full of direct damage without creatures. What are you going to do? With only one target (well, there’s technically also yourself), you’ll just aim all the spells at your opponent and they will aim theirs at you. Where’s the interaction? Where’s the compelling game play? It becomes a race to see who can draw and cast their direct damage first. Maybe, the first time, there’s a little but of novelty but I guarantee it will grow boring very quickly.

Stuffy Doll Art Change

New 16 Jun 2012 Asked by ironshade 13 Comments

Why the new art on Stuffy Doll? Everyone's favorite sack-doll mascot (Black Vise, The Rack, Cursed Rack, Leshrac's Rite, etc...) was...well, everyone's favorite sack-doll mascot. Why replace him with non-sack-doll art in a core set? Especially when the core-set art almost never changes so that new players can easily recognize the cards?

Jeremy Jarvis thought we could do a Stuffy Doll with a little more attitude. I personally really like the new art.
