Summon the Pack

Booster Mechanic Colors

New 08 May 2024 Asked by phoebe-thalisse-feather 42 Comments

Hey Mark! As a big fan of Booster Tutor and Summon the Pack (they're fantastic cube cards that I love watching people get to play with) do you think that in a potential future Un set we could get cards in other colors that let you get cards from Magic packs? Or is that a mechanic that's only in color pie for Black Un cards?

We’ve did a booster tutor in red in Unfinity (with Opening Ceremony). All colors can have access if done in an appropriately in-color way.

Booster Pack Mechanics

Is it possible for Unfinity to have an acorn card involving opening booster packs? Or are you guys trying to avoid these kinds of cards like Booster Tutor or Summon the Pack?

I’m a big fan of Booster Tutor-like cards.

Defining 'Booster Pack'

New 16 Nov 2021 Asked by maskedthespian 43 Comments

Hi Mark. Un-Rules question here. For the purposes of Booster Tutor, Stocking Tiger, and Summon the Pack, which of the following can be used as a "sealed Magic booster pack": a set booster, a collector booster, a theme booster, a themed prerelease booster (e.g. the special booster inside of a Strixhaven prerelease pack for one of the Colleges), a promo pack/foil promo pack, a prerelease promo foil in its wrapper, a box topper, a buy-a-box promo, and a Secret Lair.

The short answer is it has to be a “booster pack”Set booster? Yes, it’s a booster.Collector booster? Yes, it’s a booster.Theme booster? Yes, it’s a booster.Themed prerelease booster? Yes, it’s a booster.Promo pack? No, it’s not a booster.Prerelease promo? No, it’s not a booster.Box topper? No, it’s not a booster.Buy-a-Box promo? No, it’s not a booster.

Booster Tutor Mechanic Evaluation

Does the "open a pack" mechanic of Booster Tutor or Summon the Pack have a name? And if so where does it sit on the Gotcha scale?

We just call it a “booster tutor”. I’d rate it a 3. Un-sets like doing it.

Booster Tutor Rule Query

New 04 Oct 2020 Asked by thasgar 33 Comments

Ok, here goes for an un-mander question: are Booster Tutor and Summon the Pack subject to Rule 11? "Abilities which bring other card(s) you own from outside the game into the game (such as Living Wish; Spawnsire of Ulamog; Karn, the Great Creator) do not function in Commander." Do cards from boosters count as "outside the game?" Because they sure aren't in your sideboard.

You’re already breaking a rule to play silver border cards, so if you’re allowed to have it in your deck, you’re allowed to get the booster.

Summon the Pack Clarification

Un-rules question: I play 'Summon the Pack' in one of my Commander Decks. Do the creatures from the booster stay Zombies even if they die or change zones?

No, the stop being Zombies once they change zones.

Summon/Shuffle Gameplay

New 15 Dec 2017 Asked by anotherfandom 20 Comments

Another quick unquestion, sorry. If I Summon the Pack and someone casts something like, The Great Aurora that shuffles it all in my deck, do I do so? They're nontokens, so they can't vanish, but I'll admit I don't usually have extra sleeves.

They shuffle in and do the best you can.

Booster Packs Interaction

Is Black the only color that can interact with Booster Packs?

Not necessarily. In hindsight, I wish I’d done Summon the Pack in Green.

Sealed Pack Flavor

New 14 Nov 2017 Asked by bailite 85 Comments

If a sealed pack is analogous to the library, then Booster Tutor is definitely black, but Summon the Pack really feels green. There's even a wolf pun in the title!

It was originally called Undead Legions as a nod to the booster you probably want to open (“No Phage! No Phage!”)

Summon the Pack Color

New 14 Nov 2017 Asked by withinthe 35 Comments

With the exception of the zombie rider, Summon the Pack feels like it could be done in green pretty easily. Why did you decide on black for the effect?

The ability is a black ability. Booster Tutor being the original.

Token Card Distinction

It does not.
