Single Combat

White's Sacrifice Mechanic

New 16 Jul 2021 Asked by hedronalignment 36 Comments

RE: White Sacrifice. White has several cards that can make a player sacrifice an attacking creature, and a couple boardwipes have been released that make players sacrifice creatures conditionally. Are Promise of Loyalty, Single Combat, Slaughter the Strong, and Tragic Arrogance bends or breaks?

White does have a little sacrifice, but all players sacrifice all their creatures feels black not white.

Lenticular Design Impact

New 03 Apr 2019 Asked by badatcommander 60 Comments

Could you discuss lenticular design in the context of War of the Spark? As an enfranchised player I "get" a card like Single Combat without an indication of who these characters are or what they're feuding about, but it seems like it would be tough for new players to parse all of these references to past lore.

There is a scale of how much creative referencing there is in a set. War of the Spark is the highest we’re willing to do in a Standard-legal set. The idea is that hopefully the characters and events are cool enough in a vacuum, but yes, War of the Spark was not built as the easiest entry point to the game, creatively. It is after all a giant completion of a three-year storyline.

Birthday Combo Tale

Happy birthday Mark! I once used a combination of Krenko Mob Boss, Shared Animosity, and some untapping effects to get out one hundred 100/1 goblin tokens and deal 10000 damage in a single combat. : )

Jund Ultimatum Evaluation

New 23 Feb 2016 Asked by pontious99 51 Comments

Why is the Jund Ultimatum so much worse than the other four? The Esper one is a super fact or fiction, the Bant one can double a board state, the Grixis one can reverse a board state, the Naya one can end a game through a single combat, and then the Jund one just kills off three non-indestructible permanents. The old Eldrazi titans do that but better every time they attack.

You do understand you, not your opponent, get to pick which three permanents.

Cave Bear Combat Rumor

New 06 Nov 2014 Asked by kerrjf 101 Comments

There is a rumor that the way Mark Rosewater became head designer involved a ferocious test in which he bested a cave bear in single combat. Can you confirm this?

Let’s just say I can’t be countered and leave it at that. : )

Teysa's Power Surprise

New 14 Apr 2013 Asked by i-am-citizen-insane 19 Comments

Hey Mark, I'm really excited about Dragon's Maze, but there's one thing that's been bothering me. I find it rather strange that Teysa is a 4/4. The fact that it can defeat the Rakdos and Golgari warrior champions in single combat just doesn't make much sense to me, and she was a 2/3 back in Ravnica.

Never underestimate Teysa. I hear she’s the envy of all the ghosts. (Okay, also envoy.)
