Relentless Rats

Relentless Rats Supertype

New 20 Oct 2023 Asked by abxxxy 34 Comments

Hypothetically, could a card like relentless rats which allows you to play as many copies as you want in your deck be a 'Basic Creature'?

No, the basic supertype does not have that functionality.

Transferable Card Abilities

New 17 Oct 2023 Asked by baron-von-lucas 56 Comments

Is the relentless rats ability transferable? Could Card A allow any number of Card B's in a deck?

I think the rules would allow it, but it would need flavor to make sense. The larger problem is that it creates a deck situation that might be illegal without a way for an opponent to confirm. You see five copies of Card B, but haven’t seen Card A. How do you know if your opponent has an illegal deck?

Relentless Rats Nickname

Do you have a nickname for the Relentless Rats ability internally?

Relentless, but we don’t use it a lot.

Deck Limit Rules Complexity

New 05 Jul 2023 Asked by computervsworld 34 Comments

Question about the relentless rats/nazgul rule: Can a card in a deck remove or alter another's limit? Or does it have to be printed on the card itself? For example, "If X is your commander, your deck can have any number of cards named Y"?

We played around in this space in Time Spiral design and it gets mucky in the rules pretty fast.

Relentless Rats Design Space

New 05 Jul 2023 Asked by werewolfcommanderplayer 47 Comments

All this talk about Relentless Rats... How much design space do you think there is in it? Apostles/Petitioners/Approach are all quite unique so far and I'm interested how Green and White would approach the concept without being a simple Warlord effect. Could we see enchantments or artifacts in that space?

It’s a tool that can be used in different ways. I do agree we haven’t tapped into much.

Relentless Rats Availability

New 04 Jul 2023 Asked by reginakasteen 35 Comments

You mentioned in today's article that the Relentless Rats ability can be in any color. Was that something the Council decided right away, and if not, which color(s) did you consider keeping it in?

It’s more a tool than a mechanic, like say hybrid or double-faced. All colors can have access to all the tools.

Concept of 'Basic' in Creatures

New 22 Jul 2022 Asked by smurfyscott 36 Comments

So, it seems the question about why Relentless Rats and similar creatures don't have the "basic" marker has come around again. Personally, I have finally gotten to where I do understand why the two functions are different (even though they're similar), I have to ask: with so many people always assuming that's how it works, is there any consideration to using the "basic" supertype on creatures and changing the rules to simply mean "you can have as many in a deck as you want" to fit the player's expectations? thanks!

I already answered this today, but I’ll throw in a new reason. The danger of combining two things into one (basic being a marker and a signifier of being unlimited), is that it combines those two things into one mechanically, making it harder to refer to one and not the other. Finally, matching player intuition is making sure players don’t play the cards wrong. Basic not meaning what some more enfranchised players think it means doesn’t actually cause anyone to play anything wrong, so there’s little gain here lining things up to that perception, as it comes with other baggage we don’t want.

When.🐿- It better be “when”.

Basic Supertype Consideration

New 09 Feb 2022 Asked by armadagon 41 Comments

Mark, was there ever any consideration to giving the "You can play any number of " cards like Persistent Petitioners, Relentless Rats, and Dragon's Approach the Basic supertype, then expanding the rule that lets you play any number of copies of a Basic Land in your deck to include any card with the Basic supertype? It would allow you to save a line of rules text for these kinds of cards.

But it causes different issues. Basic means other things than “you can play more than four”.

Understanding Basic in Rules

New 16 Jan 2022 Asked by exclusionmage 33 Comments

but WHY doesn't basic mean "you can have any number of this in your deck"? Wouldn't that be easier than the game rules specially identifying each of the basic lands. Is it because adding "basic" to cards like relentless rats complicates things? e.g. relentless rats would basic lands if Ashaya was out?

Basic does means things in the tournament rules (that you can add it to limited decks even if you didn’t open it, for example), and those things aren’t true of cards like Relentless Rats.

Conundrum of Basic Cards

New 17 Nov 2021 Asked by casofsas 40 Comments

Why aren't Relentless Rats and other such cards Basic? Is it just less confusing?

Because being Basic isn’t the thing that lets you play any number of basic lands.

Reception of ‘Limitless’ Creatures

New 16 Jul 2021 Asked by revenchism 39 Comments

What was the general reception of “limitless” creatures like Shadowborn Apostle and Relentless Rats?Where would you rank them on the Storm Scale?

I’d call them a 4. I’m pretty sure we’ll do more.

Chances for White Squad Hawk

New 05 Jun 2021 Asked by dalenthas 33 Comments

What do you think is more likely: white using token making to get a Squadron Hawk type effect that actually worked in Commander, or white getting something more akin to Relentless Rats?

Both could happen, although the token version would be French vanilla.

Future Cards of Any Number

New 18 Apr 2021 Asked by remingtonmiller 30 Comments

We have now seen 'may have any number of cards named' in three colors. My question is for the colors that do not yet have cards like this (green/white) do you think their cards will be similar ' approach of the Dragon' where they will inherently push you towards running other cards in addition to themselves or more towards Relentless rats style you can just run a deck with only this card?

You’ll have to wait and see. : )

Basic Supertype for Creatures

New 02 Apr 2021 Asked by royalcrown5662 32 Comments

If or when: Basic supertype for creatures such as Relentless Rats and Shadowborn Apostle?

If. The Basic supertype is not what lets you play any number of a card.

Potential Basic Supertype Expansion

New 14 Feb 2021 Asked by uscdrewski-deactivated20210312 38 Comments

Do you think we could see the basic supertype on other types of cards like relentless rats, or would that be too complicated and still require the rules text within the card?

Again, the supertype Basic does not grant a card the ability to be played in any number.

Keywording Unlimited Card Abilities

New 21 Sep 2020 Asked by heavy-weapons-spy 38 Comments

Will abilities that allow you to have an unlimited number of a card such as "Relentless Rats" ever be keyworded? (Or would they get the "Basic" super type?)

I doubt we’d keyword it as we use it infrequently. Also, that’s not what the Basic supertype does. .
