Praise for Flubs, the Fool

New 22 Jul 2024 Asked by ad33dwithoutaname 6 Comments

The highest of fives to the card designer, illustrator, flavor text author and everyone responsible for Flubs, the Fool. Probably my all time favorite magic card, Vorthos and Melvin had a child! Please, if there is no lore written on Flubs, keep it that way. He is perfect this way.

High fives to be applied.

Appreciating Bloomburrow’s Creative Direction

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by tylerja-blog 5 Comments

The art and creative direction in Bloomburrow is far and away some of my favourite since pergaps original mirrodin. Thank you and the relevant parties very much for the creative direction of Bloomburrow! There is a sense of true creation with this set that takes Magic in a new and refeshingly inspired direction that Id frankly missed. Im usually excited for new cards from a Mel perspective, but today Im excited as a Vorthos first time in a while! Congratulations (:

Thanks.

Complex In-Universe Laws Limitations

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 4 Comments

If a work of fiction features such complex in universe laws of reality that there is no way to satisfy both Mel and Vorthos at the same time (like perhaps each person has a verb and a noun that are metaphysicaly connected to them and can do anything at all that can be described as [verb]ing the [noun] even metaphorically. Such as the one who steals breath being able to imprison people magically because breath is associated with freedom) does that make it less likely to get a Universes Beyond?

Can you give me an example from an actual property?

Challenges of Un-sets

New 19 May 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 30 Comments

Hi Mark. What are the biggest factors that prevent the next Un-set from being made? I know that the last Un-set wasn't as successful, but what could be different about the next Un-set that makes it more successful? I really want to see Melvin/Mel to complete the cycle, and I want to see more fun, wacky ideas!

The last Un-set, Unfinity, was the best selling Un-set of all time (and by a good margin). The challenge with making another one is the bar that a set has to compete against to be a new product has just gotten so high, especially with Universes Beyond products in the mix.

Un-Set Future

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by bakabakadesign 49 Comments

Hi Mark. Now that new Un-sets seem to be an 'if', how is Mel ever going to get released? As very much a Mel myself, I need to see this cycle complete!

I haven’t given up just yet.

Creature Type Harmony

New 06 Jan 2024 Asked by bostonpizza14 40 Comments

Will we ever see a consolidation of creature types? We have a few examples that encompass the same theme (devil/tiefling/imp for example) that seem to only hinder players trying to keep to a certain tribe.

It’s the age old conflict of Vorthos vs. Mel. Vorthos likes lots of variety, and Mel wants everything consolidated.

Would Mel be a White card?

Yes. You caught the mega-cycle pattern. : )

Mel's Card Possibility

New 13 Dec 2023 Asked by aalgot 32 Comments

when does mel get a card, (I guess it might be hard to make that work but it would be cool)

If I get the chance to do a fifth Un-set, Mel will be in it

Vorthos and Mel Intersection

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by clatterslikeworry 33 Comments

Question re-ask: could there be an aesthetic profile for people who value the ideal mechanical execution of a particular flavour concept? Cards like Candy Trail (Food Clue!) and Jurassic Park (Dinosaurs have escape!) are really doing it for me from an aesthetic point of view, but I don't identify as a Vorthos or a Mel. Am I actually one of those two types and I'm just understanding them badly?

That intersection means your a Vorthos and a Mel. : )

Un Set Mel Card

In case there is ever a fifth Un set, do you already have a design for a Mel card that you like?

I have some ideas.

No Fire//Ice Choice

New 01 Oct 2023 Asked by strymon 23 Comments

Did Three Bowls of Porridge ever literally have Fire//Ice among its choices? The Melvin in me is sad that it is not.

It did not.

Creature Type Criteria

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by dude1818 37 Comments

Why is kirin a creature type but not giraffe? And if giraffe ever becomes a creature type, would questing beast get errata to be one?

What does and doesn’t qualify as a creature type is a tricky issue. Go too narrow and you miss some charm. Go too broad and you eliminate a lot of typal possibilities. It’s kind of Vorthos vs. Mel.

Showcase Treatments Suggestion

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by strymon 25 Comments

I’m a Melvin. My favorite cards of a set are often the signpost uncommons (SUs). I really love when the SUs receive showcase treatment. The SUs from Kaldheim and Dominaria were awesome. Any chance that they could begin receiving showcase treatments by default if they match the theme? WOE not having storybook illustrations for its SUs was disappointing.

It’s not a default, but something we will do sometimes. It depends on how big the theme we want to support is. We only get so much art for Booster Fun.

Vorthos and Mel Origins

New 04 Aug 2023 Asked by krobat 31 Comments

Where did the names Vorthos and Mel come from?

Matt Cavotta came up with the name for Vorthos in his “Savor the Flavor” column. I came up with the name Mel (originally Melvin, but shortened to make in non-gendered) in my “Making Magic” column.

Player Types Explained

New 14 Jul 2023 Asked by king-of-masks-deactivated202307 40 Comments

Since there's three out of Spike/Timmy/Johnny, why are there only two for Vorthos/Melvin? Or are there supposed to be 5 for all the magic colors?

The first are psychographics. The second are aesthetic profiles. They are different things, so they exist in different number. Why are there three basic silverware, but just two types of spices (salt and pepper) in shakers on the table? : )

Gamer Archetype Names

New 19 May 2023 Asked by spotlight-stageright 63 Comments

So we have Timmy, the green gamer who loves putting big stuff on the battlefield, Johnny, the blue gamer who lives for cool and interesting combos, Spike, the black gamer who wants to win as fast as possible, and Vorthos, the red gamer who cares about the theming and lore of a character/place/etc. What will the white gamer be called, and what will they care about, if we even get a final gamer in the cycle?

Timmy/Tammy, Johnny/Jenny, and Spike are the three psychographics. The two aesthetic profiles are Vorthos and Mel. Mel does like things orderly. : )

Psychographics Utility Today

New 24 Apr 2023 Asked by thetitan555 32 Comments

How useful do you feel the psychographics/aes-tho-graphics(?) are in the current day? Does it still make sense to design 'Timmy cards' or 'Mel cards'?

They are still very useful. Players are still psychologically motivated to play Magic, and as designers understanding that is key to making appropriate designs.Note Mel is an aesthetic profile and not a player psychographic.

New Capenna Triomes

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by floorlicker 37 Comments

Do you think R&D missed the mark when naming the new capenna triomes?

It depends if you ask the Vorthoses or the Melvins.
