Managorger Hydra

Managorger Hydra Color

New 31 May 2023 Asked by chairsarefornerds 37 Comments

Hey Mark! I'm confused on the color pie for Managorger Hydra, it's one of my favorite cards but it feels more Simic or even Izzet than monogreen, any insight?

All colors are allowed to care about the casting of spells. The output just needs to be in color, and making a Hydra bigger is very green. Blue and red should have a high volume of this trigger, but it’s allowable in other colors.

Green Bend Analysis

Is Deeproot Champion even a bend? Green clearly gets the Forgotten Ancient/Managorger Hydra ability (whenever a player casts a spell, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature), as well weaker versions or subsets of that ability (like on Quirion Dryad).

It might not be a bend and a light bend even if it is.

Creature Stat Decisions

how do you decide whether a creature like managorger hydra is a 1/1 or a 0/0 that comes into play with a counter?

I tend to make them 0/0 to make them easier to track but different designs will have different needs.

Birthday Trivia Request

New 14 Jul 2015 Asked by deerwife 35 Comments

it was my birthday on the 11th but it looks like i made the mistake of sending a trivia ask right as you went into the SDCC panel. is there any chance you'd please be willing to give trivia on either of my commanders (marath and celestial kirin) or-- if there isn't anything fun there-- on my prerelease promo, managorger hydra? thanks!

Marath was designed to take advantage of the Commander rule that Commanders return back to the Command Zone when leaving the battlefield (as were a number of cards in that design). The design is pretty cool in that it allows you to kill Marath so you can play him again. My only gripe is the card has three X effects you can generate by sacrificing +1/+1 counters: Putting X +1/+1 counters in a creature, deal X to a creature or player or make an X/X elemental token. They were supposed to be an effect from each of the three colors of Marath - White, Red and Green. The second ability is Red and the third ability is Green but the first ability is more Green than White. (Both put +1/+1 counters on but Green tends to do the larger numbers as going tall is more Green). Happy Belated Birthday!
